DonViejo's JournalReport: GOPer Said 'Poorly-Dressed' House Dems Wore White For Clinton
By KRISTIN SALAKY Published MARCH 1, 2017, 3:32 PM EDT
Rep. Kevin Cramer (R-ND) knocked the "poorly-dressed" women of the House Democrats who wore white pantsuits to President Donald Trump's address to a joint session of Congress Tuesday night, according to Politico.
Cramer brought up the event during a radio town hall address on Wednesday, according to the site. A constituent said Democrats should work with President Trump, even though Republicans did not work with President Barack Obama when he was in office.
The congressman reportedly agreed that there are many issues that the two parties can agree on and that they should work together on, but then brought up the female House Democrats choice of attire for the address, according to Politico. He called it a "disease" that they would wear white pantsuits in order to support former Democratic Presidential nominee Hilary Clinton.
But by the way, did you notice how poorly several of them were dressed as well? he asked, according to the report. It is a syndrome. There is no question, there is a disease associated with the notion that a bunch of women would wear bad-looking white pantsuits in solidarity with Hillary Clinton to celebrate her loss. You cannot get that weird.

Trump's Proposal To Gut The State Department Runs Into GOP Buzzsaw
By ALICE OLLSTEIN Published MARCH 1, 2017, 2:22 PM EDT
President Donald Trump's first budget proposal is full of red meat for conservatives: a massive hike in military spending paid for by deep cuts to domestic programs that are perennial targets for Republicans, such as the Environmental Protection Agency.
But one key piece of the plan has run into a buzzsaw of opposition from Republican lawmakers: a bid to slash the State Department's funding by more than a third.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) bluntly told reporters this week that a budget with such cuts could "probably not" pass the Senate, and several members of his caucus confirmed to TPM that they would oppose such a move.
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) told TPM his response to the proposed cuts is: "I don't agree." Asked to elaborate, McCain vehemently repeated "I don't agree" several more times.

CNN: Trump lied to anchors about immigration to get 'positive press coverage' in run-up to speech
DAVID FERGUSON
01 MAR 2017 AT 14:42 ET
CNNs White House correspondent Sara Murray said Wednesday that the White House pulled a bait-and-switch with anchors from the network at a meeting on Tuesday regarding the topic of immigration.
Lets just change gears entirely and talk about the bait and switch that the president pulled when it came to immigration yesterday. He had this meeting with the anchors, he talked about a path to legal status, Murray said, according to Media Matters.
Basically they fed us things that they thought these anchors would like, that they thought would give them positive press coverage for the next few hours. A senior administration official admitted that it was a misdirection play. And you will note that when the president was actually out there speaking to the American public, he didnt talk about a path to legal status, she explained.
He talked about reforming the legal immigration system so its merit-based, Murray said. That means fewer low-skilled workers, fewer people coming on family ties, more people coming on high-skilled visas. That is still closer to a Stephen Miller and Steve Bannon framework of the world than Gang of Eight, who pushed comprehensive immigration reform.

Karl Rove: Democratic Responses To Trump's Speech 'Affected His Delivery'
By ESME CRIBB Published MARCH 1, 2017, 2:24 PM EDT
Former George W. Bush aide Karl Rove said Wednesday that Democrats' less-than-enthusiastic responses to President Donald Trump's speech to Congress "affected his delivery."
"You could tell it affected his delivery a little bit," Rove said Wednesday in an interview on Fox Business Network. "He started reading almost exclusively from the panel to his left, which allowed him to look at the right side of the chamber, which were the Republicans."
He said that Democrats were "in an awkward place" during the speech and looked "churlish and small" in their reactions.
"They dont like him, they didn't want to seen as, you know, they're being pressed by their hard left to oppose him on each and every thing," Rove said. "I mean, when he denounced hate and evil in all of its forms, a lot of Democrats didnt applaud and very few of them stood. Thats just how poisoned the atmosphere is."

FBI corruption probe just the 'tip of the iceberg' for Trump's scandal-plagued Border Patrol nominee
DAVID FERGUSON
01 MAR 2017 AT 12:33 ET
Pres. Donald Trumps nominee to head the U.S. Customs and Border Protection is being investigated by the FBI for possible improper use of money and weapons seized during criminal investigations.
Vocativ.com said Wednesday that the corruption investigation is just the tip of the iceberg of charges leveled against Paul Babeu, the right-wing former sheriff of Arizonas rural Pinal County. For years, Babeu has been a frequent guest on Fox News, appearing as an immigration hardliner who wants to crack down on drug smuggling and human trafficking.
He appeared in a campaign ad for Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and entertained congressional ambitions of his own until a 2012 scandal that ultimately discredited the down-on-brown rhetoric he spewed on Fox News, forced him to come out of the closet as a gay American and cost him a job as the Arizona co-chair of Mitt Romneys presidential campaign, wrote Vocativs James King, who was a reporter for the Phoenix New Times in 2012.
For six years, Babeu carried on an affair with an undocumented immigrant named Jose Orozco. Babeu reportedly threatened to use his powers as sheriff to have Orozco deported from the U.S. if he ever breathed a word about their relationship to the public.
But Babeus penchant for scandal goes beyond dating an illegal immigrant and allegedly threatening him with deportation; lest we forget the school described by one member of Congress as a place of horrors he ran for troubled youth before he became sheriff, said King.

Texas Supreme Court hears challenge on same-sex marriage rights
Source: Reuters
01 MAR 2017 AT 13:35 ET
Two Houston taxpayers, backed by Texas Republican leaders, on Wednesday challenged Houstons spousal benefits for same-sex couples, asking the states highest civil court to re-examine parts of a landmark 2015 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that legalized gay marriage.
Lawyers for Houston said in opening arguments at the Texas Supreme Court that the U.S. Supreme Court has decided that same-sex marriages should be treated equally nationwide and its decision means Houston is obliged to provide the benefits.
Human rights groups contend the case tries to erode the U.S. Supreme Courts decision on an already-settled matter. Petitioners countered the top U.S. courts decision on same-sex marriage is poorly reasoned and the couples are not entitled to the spousal employment benefits.
A state courts ultimate obligation is to the Constitution, not to the jargon and innovations created by Supreme Court justices, the petitioners said in court papers. Jonathan Mitchell, a petitioners lawyer, told the Texas court it should be up to the state to decide whether to extend spousal benefits to same-sex couples.

Trump to lift federal coal ban, other green rules, next week: White House
Source: Reuters
01 MAR 2017 AT 13:17 ET
U.S. President Donald Trump is likely to sign an executive order next week that lifts a ban on new federal coal mining leases and starts the process of killing other Obama-era initiatives to combat global climate change, a White House official said.
Rescinding federal coal leasing moratorium is part of that executive order, which has lots of different components, including the Clean Power Plan, the official told Reuters on Wednesday by email, confirming the order was scheduled to come next week.
The Clean Power Plan is former President Barack Obamas centerpiece initiative to combat climate change, and requires states to slash emissions of carbon dioxide.

Russian jets accidentally bombed US-backed forces in Syria: US general
Source: AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE
01 MAR 2017 AT 13:18 ET
On Tuesday, we had some Russian aircraft and regime aircraft bomb some villages that I believe they thought were held by ISIS, yet
actually on the ground were some of our Syrian Arab Coalition forces, Army Lieutenant General Stephen Townsend told reporters, noting that there were some casualties.
He added that US commandos were less than five kilometers (three miles) away and that the bombing stopped when the Americans called the Russians on a special hotline.

Dept. Of Labor Proposes Delaying Rule That Brokers Work In Clients' Interest
Source: Talking Points Memo
By MATT SHUHAM Published MARCH 1, 2017, 1:16 PM EDT
The Department of Labor announced Wednesday that it would consider delaying the implementation of a new fiduciary rule, part of which requires that retirement brokers provide investment advice in their clients best interest.
After a 15-day period for public comment period beginning Thursday, the department could choose to extend the implementation of the rule originally slated to go into affect on April 10 until June 9.
A Department of Labor press release cited a Feb. 3 executive order from Donald Trump to justify the proposed delay. In it, Trump argued that the new regulation, pursued aggressively by the Obama administration, may significantly alter the manner in which Americans can receive financial advice, and may not be consistent with the policies of my Administration.
In the order, Trump also asked the Labor Department to consider whether the rule is likely to cause an increase in litigation, and an increase in the prices that investors and retirees must pay to gain access to retirement services.
