Trump Administration's Census Citizenship Question Plans Halted By Third Judge

Source: NPR

April 5, 2019 12:41 PM ET

HANSI LO WANG

The Trump administration's plans to add a hotly contested citizenship question to the 2020 census have suffered another major blow in the courts. The question asks, "Is this person a citizen of the United States?"

A third federal judge has found the decision to include it on forms for the national headcount to be unlawful.

In a 119-page opinion, U.S. District Judge George Hazel in Maryland concluded that the decision by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, who oversees the census, to add the question violated administrative law. Federal judges in New York and California came to the same conclusion.

Similar to the earlier ruling in California, the judge also found including the question would be unconstitutional because, at a time of increased immigration enforcement and anti-immigrant rhetoric, it hinders the government's ability to count every person living in the U.S. once a decade as the Constitution requires.

GOP Strategist Sued By Nunes Questions Whether He Understands Constitution

By Nicole Lafond
April 5, 2019 12:07 pm

The Republican communications strategist who Rep. Devin Nunes is suing — alongside Twitter, a cow and a mom parody account — penned an op-ed in USA Today on Friday, suggesting that Nunes not only doesn’t understand the Bill of Rights, but also his commitment to it as a literal lawmaker.

“It’s vitally important that the entire nation understands what this lawsuit is really about: A sitting member of the U.S. government, specifically, a congressman, is trying to stifle free speech — mine, yours and every other American’s — by using litigation as a cudgel to bully and intimidate,” Liz Mair wrote, speaking out at length for the first time since Nunes filed the suit last month. She questioned whether Nunes actually defends the Constitution he swore to defend.

“His action in filing this pleading draws into question not just his view of law applicable to this case, but also his belief in freedom of speech and his commitment and adherence to his own oath of office. Individually and collectively, all of these things should be extremely concerning to every American, no matter where they live, whom they vote for and where they fall on the philosophical spectrum,” she continued. “Rep. Nunes’ lawsuit also rightly generates skepticism that he truly understands the United States’ history of broadly and firmly protecting liberties, and the truth about why the Bill of Rights — including the First Amendment — was drawn up and remains the law of the land to this day.”

Nunes filed his lawsuit against Mair, Twitter and the two troll accounts in mid-March, seeking $250 million in damages for defaming him online and, as he claims, planning an orchestrated attack against him. The “defamatory” tweets include memes of Nunes, President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in a “human centipede” style relationship, jokes about him growing up on a dairy farm and monikers like “dirty Devin.”

Joe Biden to Reporters: I'm Sorry I Didn't 'Understand,' But Not 'For Anything That I Have Ever Done

by Colby Hall | Apr 5th, 2019, 12:46 pm

Former Vice President Joe Biden took questions from reporters for the first time since allegations that his public displays of affection crossed boundaries and made a number of women feel uncomfortable.

Biden earnestly addressed the allegations but fell short of making a full apology. “I’m sorry I didn’t understand more,” he said, adding, “I’m not sorry for any of my intentions”

When asked if he expected more women to come forward to raise concerns about his behavior Biden replied “I wouldn’t be surprised” adding “But I’ve had hundreds and hundreds of people who contact me and say the exact opposite.”

Biden addressed the media after speaking at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers’ (IBEW) construction and maintenance conference on Friday morning. During the speech, the former Vice President innocently put his arm around a young boy and told the audience “by the way, he gave me permission to touch him,” which drew a big laugh.

Biden acknowledged the week-long controversy for the first time publicly, after releasing a video Wednesday in which he claimed to understand the “shifting social norms” and pledged to ostensibly do better.

Former CNN contributor says Pete Buttigieg believes Jesus was OK with bestiality

By Alex Bollinger · Friday, April 5, 2019

A prominent conservative pundit and former CNN contributor accused South Bend mayor and gay presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg of defending bestiality. Buttigieg, of course, didn’t even utter the word “bestiality.” But that didn’t stop Erick Erickson from publishing a story on his website The Resurgent with the title “Mayor Pete Buttigieg Apparently Thinks Jesus Would Be Okay With Beastiality [sic].”

The basis for Erickson’s argument is that Buttigieg criticized conservative Christians’ for their opposition to women’s reproductive freedom.

Buttigieg said that conservative Christians are “saying so much about what Christ said so little about, and so little about what he said so much about.”

Erickson contends that if “abortion is okay because Jesus did not talk about it,” then it follows that “bestiality is okay because Jesus did not talk about it.”

And if it wasn’t perfectly clear to readers that the entire point of the blog post is to put the word bestiality – er, that is, “beastiality” – in a title with a gay man’s picture under it, Erickson said that Buttigieg can’t really be a Christian because he’s gay.

Trump threatens to blow up his own Mexico trade deal in unhinged tweets

Source: RawStory

05 APR 2019 AT 09:28 ET

President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to blow up the trade deal his administration negotiated with Mexico last year if the country doesn’t stop the flow of immigrants into the United States. The president began his tweet storm by attacking the Washington Post for accurately reporting that he backed off his threats to completely shut down the southern American border.

“The Crazed and Dishonest Washington Post again purposely got it wrong,” the president wrote. “Mexico, for the first time in decades, is meaningfully apprehending illegals at THEIR Southern Border, before the long march up to the U.S. This is great and the way it should be. The big flow will stop.”

He then threatened to rip up his trade deal if Mexico doesn’t play ball.

“However, if for any reason Mexico stops apprehending and bringing the illegals back to where they came from, the U.S. will be forced to Tariff at 25% all cars made in Mexico and shipped over the Border to us,” he wrote. “If that doesn’t work, which it will, I will close the Border. This will supersede USMCA. Likewise I am looking at an economic penalty for the 500 Billion Dollars in illegal DRUGS that are shipped and smuggled through Mexico and across our Southern Border. Over 100,00 Americans die each year, sooo many families destroyed!”

Ex-Rep Stringer On Child Sex Trafficking: I Don't Think It Does 'Damage,' 'Part Of The Experience'

By Kate Riga

April 5, 2019 8:12 am

Disgraced ex-state Rep. David Stringer’s (R-AZ) history of disturbing comments on child sex trafficking have come to light as part of the state House Ethics Committee’s investigation into his expunged criminal record which included charges related to his alleged rape of underage children in the 1980s.

According to documents obtained by the Arizona Republic, Stringer told an activist in 2018 that he doesn’t believe sex trafficking does “damage” to the children and that he doesn’t “like to demonize it.”

“If an uncle takes his niece or nephew to a playground, and they go on the merry-go-round and have some ice cream, and then do their thing, that’s just part of the experience,” he added.

Around the same time, he made alarming comments to a school administrator in the context of an internship where he worked with children learning to speak English.

“I like being a daddy figure for the little girls when they sit on my lap,” he reportedly said.

Trump accuses Dems of 'inventing a coverup'

Source: The Hill

BY JOHN BOWDEN - 04/05/19 08:49 AM EDT

President Trump took aim at Democrats seeking the release of Robert Mueller's full report on his years-long investigation of the Trump campaign and Russia on Friday, accusing them of inventing a cover-up.

Quoting an editorial published Wednesday in The Wall Street Journal, Trump insinuated that Democrats had shifted their focus to proving that Attorney General William Barr was covering up the results of Mueller's investigation after having "lost" on the issue of collusion.

The editorial referenced by Trump was published Wednesday in the Journal and accuses Democratic lawmakers of shifting to accusing the attorney general of a cover up while "reeling" from the effects of Trump's political victory surrounding the end of the Mueller investigation without further charges being filed.

"Democrats are still reeling from Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s conclusion that the Trump campaign did not collude with Russians in 2016. But they’ve now hit upon a political comeback strategy: Accuse Attorney General William Barr of a coverup," the Journal's editors wrote.

Pompeo "confident" there will be a third summit with North Korea

Source: CBS News

By EMILY TILLETT CBS NEWS April 5, 2019, 8:55 AM

Despite two failed attempts at brokering a firm agreement to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that he's confident a third summit will take place between President Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.

Speaking to "CBS This Morning" on Friday, Pompeo would not provide a clear date or location for this third meeting, but expressed hope that it would take place "soon." Pompeo acknowledged that while "we didn't get as far as the world is demanding," the two leaders left Hanoi with a "deeper understanding of each other."

"The positions that the two sides had, the two leaders were able to make progress in that respect," he said. In February, President Trump told reporters in Vietnam he and Kim were unable to sign an agreement as scheduled largely because they disagreed on sanctions and nuclear facilities.

After the White House abruptly announced the summit would be cut short, Mr. Trump explained, "Sometimes you have to walk." Mr. Trump said walking away from the talks would be better than giving away too much. North Korea, the president said, wanted the U.S. to eliminate all sanctions imposed on the nation in exchange for the shuttering of just one nuclear facility.
