China warns students, academics of risks of studying in U.S.

Source: Reuters

WORLD NEWS JUNE 3, 2019 / 3:22 AM / UPDATED 5 HOURS AGO

BEIJING (Reuters) - China warned students and academics on Monday about risks involved in studying in the United States, pointing to limits on the duration of visas and visa refusals, amid a bitter trade war and other tension between the two countries.

Relations between China and the United States have nosedived because of their trade conflict, U.S. sanctions on Chinese tech firm Huawei Technologies Co Ltd and tension over the disputed South China Sea and U.S. support for Chinese-claimed Taiwan.

The Ministry of Education, in a short statement, said that recently some students seeking to study in the United States had encountered problems with the duration of their visas being limited and an increase in visa refusals.

“This has affected Chinese students going to study in the United States or smoothly completing their studies,” it added.

Kushner on whether he'd contact FBI if Russians ask for another meeting: 'I don't know'

BY OWEN DAUGHERTY - 06/03/19 09:39 AM EDT

White House senior adviser Jared Kushner said in an interview that aired on HBO late Sunday that he doesn’t know if he would contact the FBI if contacted again by Russians seeking a meeting.

Kushner, who is President Trump's son in law, was pressed by Axios reporter Jonathan Swan on why he didn’t originally contact the FBI after receiving an email that offered the Trump campaign a meeting with Russians offering dirt on rival Hillary Clinton.

“We’re in a place now where people are playing Monday morning quarterback and they’re being so self-righteous,” Kushner said.

He said he was running three companies and helping with the presidential campaign in the summer of 2016 when he got an email that told him to show up for a “meeting that I had been told about earlier that I didn’t know what the hell it was about.”

“I show up at the meeting, I stay for 15 minutes, it’s a clown show,” Kushner said, referring to the meeting in Trump Tower where he reportedly met with a Russian lawyer offering damaging information on Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee.

Alabama Still Celebrates Jefferson Davis' Birthday

June 3, 2019 at 9:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

“Today the state of Alabama marks the birthday of Jefferson Davis, who served as president of the Confederate States of America from 1861 to 1865. A state holiday, state offices are closed throughout Alabama. Davis, who at one point owned more than 100 slaves, led a government resting on the principle of white supremacy.”

In response, the Montgomery Advertiser published “the testimonies of nine African Americans held in human bondage, all interviewed in Alabama in 1937.”

UK Teen Mowed Giant Penis and ‘Climate Change is Real’ into Field Near Airport Where Trump Arrived

A U.K. teen honored President Donald Trump’s arrival to the country by mowing a massive phallic image and the words “climate change is real” into a field near the Hatfield Heath airport in Essex.

18-year-old Ollie Nancarrow, whose family owns the lawn next to the airfield, also mowed the words “Oi Trump” and a polar bear adjacent to the giant penis. The teen said that he wrote the message to note that Trump’s anti-climate reform policies are not accepted in the U.K. and to promote his enviro-friendly marketplace, Born Eco.

“Donald Trump and his denial of climate change are not welcome and I want him to be fully aware of that when he flies into Stansted on Monday,” Nancarrow told the Bishop’s Stortford Independent.

While Trump has not acknowledged the warm greeting yet, the president did begin quickly attacking one of his U.K. opponents immediately upon landing in the country this morning.

Watch Kushner Get Confronted With Trump’s Birtherism in Tense Interview: ‘Was it Racist?’

By Connor MannionJun 2nd, 2019, 7:39 pm

Jared Kushner repeatedly refused to answer a question about President Donald Trump’s birtherism while defending his father-in-law in a tense interview with Axios’ Jonathan Swan.

Swan asked if Kushner had ever seen Trump do or say anything racist or bigoted, and Kushner responded no.

“Was birtherism racist?” Swan then asked.

“Look, I wasn’t really involved in that,” Kushner said after a pause.

“I know you weren’t. Was it racist?” Swan asked again.

Jared Kushner: 'Not Here To Be Trusted' by Palestinian People During Middle East Peace Process

By Colby HallJun 3rd, 2019, 7:13 am

HBO premiered the first episode of the second season Axios Sunday night by featuring a remarkably interview with White House advisor (and presidential son-in-law) Jared Kushner interviewed by Jonathan Swan.

The wide-ranging interview provided a number of interesting moments, the one featured in this segment deals with the Middle East Peace Plan of which Kushner is overseeing. Swan asked if Kushner’s religious beliefs (he is an Orthodox Jew) have a negative effect on negotiations because Palestinians may not trust him. His response was notable, in that he said that he’s “not here to be trusted” before continuing to explain his peace plan process.

Kushner is rather known for keeping a relatively low media profile, and yet appears to have a long list of important tasks with which he has been charged (which some have joked by saying his real title should be “Secretary of Everything.”)

Kushner casts doubt on Palestinians' ability to self-govern

Source: CNN

By Tamara Qiblawi, CNN

Updated 7:27 AM ET, Mon June 3, 2019

(CNN)White House Senior Adviser Jared Kushner said in an interview aired Sunday that Palestinians deserve "self-determination," but expressed uncertainty over their capability to govern themselves.

In an interview with "Axios on HBO" Kushner stopped short of supporting Palestinian statehood. Asked if Palestinians could expect freedom from Israeli interference -- either governmental or military -- Kushner responded, "I think that's a high bar ... if you don't have proper government structure and proper security when people are living in fear of terror, that hurts the Palestinians."

"The hope is that over time they can become capable of governing," said Kushner. He added that the Palestinians "need to have a fair judicial system ... freedom of press, freedom of expression, tolerance for all religions" before the Palestinian territories can become "investable."

Kushner is President Donald Trump's son-in-law and the architect of a widely-anticipated peace plan for Israel and the Palestinians. The plan has been dismissed by the Palestinian leadership for being partial to Israel.ael.

John Delaney booed by California Democrats after criticizing 'Medicare for All'

By Eli Watkins, CNN

Updated 8:12 PM ET, Sun June 2, 2019

Washington (CNN)Members of the crowd at the California Democratic Convention booed presidential hopeful John Delaney on Sunday when the former Maryland congressman criticized "Medicare for All."

"Medicare for All may sound good, but it's actually not good policy, nor is it good politics," Delaney said, inspiring a wave of boos.

As the booing continued, Delaney said, "We should have universal health care" several times before completing the thought and continuing to criticize the health care policy championed by a range of 2020 candidates, notably including Vermont independent Sen. Bernie Sanders, who made Medicare for All a centerpiece of his previous presidential run.

"We should have universal health care, but it shouldn't be the kind of health care that kicks 150 million Americans off their health care," Delaney said.

"That's not smart policy. I want everyone to have health care, but it's got to be a plan that works for every American."

It's 2 primaries now: Biden and everyone else

The former veep is running against himself. The rest of the field is trying to get within striking distance.

By DAVID SIDERS 06/03/2019 05:01 AM EDT

SAN FRANCISCO — With the introductory stage of the Democratic presidential primary now over, the lines of engagement are beginning to take shape. And what is emerging is a primary that is no longer one nominating contest, but two.

The first, occurring wherever Joe Biden materializes, is the front-runner’s campaign against himself — his history of failed presidential elections, his propensity for gaffes, his need to adhere to new “boundaries of protecting personal space.”

The other includes everyone else.

Nowhere were the two tracks of the primary more stark than over the weekend, when Biden positioned himself in Ohio, far from the horde of other Democratic contenders. While more than half the field jostled at the Californian Democratic Party convention here — the largest single state party gathering in the nation — the former vice president had the lectern to himself at a Human Rights Campaign dinner on Saturday, contrasting his candidacy not with any Democrat, but with the Republican president.

His counter-programming appearance served the latest reminder that, with large leads in national and several early state polls, Biden is running a race in a vacuum, adhering to his own rules and schedule. The biggest threats to his campaign at the moment aren’t his rivals so much as his advanced age and ability to remain disciplined in an era where missteps are under heightened scrutiny.
