Pence: 'Extremist Voices' On 'Far Right' And 'Far Left' Will Be 'Marginalized'

Source: Talking Points Memo

By MATT SHUHAM Published AUGUST 14, 2017 11:48 AM

Vice President Mike Pence said Monday President Donald Trump “will continue to be clear” in condemning white supremacist hate groups — even though the President himself has not actually done so in the wake of a white supremacist terrorist attack during a hectic rally in Charlottesville, Virginia that left one counter-protester dead.

Pence also echoed Trump’s language that “many sides” of the white supremacist rally were worth condemning. Pence said he believed “we’re going to see these extremist voices on the far right and on the far left marginalized as they should be as Americans come together around our shared values.”

In an interview with Pence Monday, NBC’s Peter Alexander asked: “Do you have any concern, even if it’s not the President’s intention, that he, in fact, by not condemning white supremacists by their names, is dividing Americans?”

“Peter, we talked about that very extensively yesterday,” Pence responded. “The President made it very clear in his statement this weekend that we condemn all forms of hate and violence, and particularly condemn, as we did yesterday — we condemned the hate and the violence and the bigotry of organizations that showed up in Charlottesville like the KKK and white supremacists.”

Here's how Republicans can atone for backing Trump - By Jennifer Rubin

By Jennifer Rubin August 14 at 10:30 AM

Donald Trump would not have become the Republican nominee and then the president if not for the support, excuse-making, intentional blindness, moral obtuseness and political cowardice of elected GOP officials and party insiders. These Republicans could have done dozens of things to impede his way — denied money, withheld endorsements, denounced his symbiotic relationship with white nationalists, etc. They therefore bear a special burden when Trump behaves in ways they assured us he never would — trampling on democratic norms, attacking democratic institutions and giving aid and comfort to white supremacists.

In the wake of the violence in Charlottesville, what could Republicans do?

* In the near-term, Republicans could hold hearings on the rise of neo-fascist and white-supremacist groups and demand that the administration get serious about combating domestic terrorism instigated by these groups.

* They could demand the firing of White House advisers (Stephen K. Bannon, Sebastian Gorka) who provide ideological ballast for the white-nationalist movement.

* Republicans could pass a resolution calling for removal of Confederate statues that celebrate those who took up arms against the United States and defended slavery. (Virginia gubernatorial candidate Ed Gillespie must do so immediately, especially in light of his narrowly defeated primary opponent’s campaign extolling Confederate monuments. The same goes for Senate candidates in Alabama.)

* Republicans could defund and denounce the ludicrous election fraud commission, which rests on the lie that there was massive voting fraud and is a thinly disguised ruse to put into effect new obstacles to voting. (Every state should be encouraged to have automatic voting registration, as Oregon and five other states and the District of Columbia have.)

* They could pass legislation granting permanent legal status to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) beneficiaries.

White supremacists attack 'radical left' outside courthouse as Fields Jr. is arraigned

‘You guys are a Lynch mob’: White supremacists attack ‘radical left’ outside courthouse as Fields Jr. is arraigned

White supremacists and Nazis arrived to support James Alex Fields Jr., who was arraigned at the Charlottesville, Virginia courthouse Monday for allegedly ramming his car into counterprotesters.

In support of Fields Jr., a man spoke to press claiming that the group was legally protesting and had a “legal permit” to hold their demonstration. “We defended ourselves,” the man said. “While the enemy brought improvised flame-throwers. While they brought sticks and they brought knives.”

“We defended ourselves against thugs in a battle that was brought by this city that wanted a blood-bath,” he continued. “The police were given a stand-down order as we were trying to exercise our legal, Constitutional right to have a permit.”

College Republicans president spotted in Charlottesville: 'They have no proof that I'm a racist'

DAVID FERGUSON
13 AUG 2017 AT 21:44 ET

The president of Washington State University’s chapter of the College Republicans says that he’s being unfairly maligned after he was photographed participating in the white supremacist demonstrations in Charlottesville, VA over the weekend.

KREM Channel 2’s Amanda Roley spoke to James Allsup after his photo was identified in the #GoodNightAltRight Twitter campaign, which circulated photos of the white supremacists — including neo-Nazi groups, the Ku Klux Klan and “truckloads of skinheads” — who converged on Charlottesville purportedly to protest the removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from a municipal park.

The “Unite the Right” march quickly turned into a melee that ended with the death of a 32-year-old anti-fascist protester and the injury of at least 19 others after a 20-year-old neo-Nazi rammed his car into a group of counter-demonstrators.

Allsup — who has 14,000 Twitter followers and 145,000 YouTube subscribers — was identified in a tweet by the account @YesYoureRacist on Saturday night.

He told Channel 2 that he’s being smeared. “They have no proof that I’m a racist,” Allsup said. “They are slandering me and that I’m racist without evidence because I talk about history and I talk about American politics.”

One father of a marcher in Charlottesville, Virginia over the weekend is denouncing his own son after the young man was seen on national news spouting hate.

In a letter to Fargo, North Dakota’s InfoForum, father Pearce Tefft wrote that his family wasn’t certain about the beliefs of his son Pete. He learned of them as the country did, while watching Peter on the news.

“I, along with all of his siblings and his entire family, wish to loudly repudiate my son’s vile, hateful, and racist rhetoric and actions,” Tefft wrote, clarifying that he certainly didn’t learn such values at home.

“I have shared my home and hearth with friends and acquaintances of every race, gender, and creed. I have taught all of my children that all men and women are created equal. That we must love each other all the same,” he continued. However, he acknowledged, that Peter chose another path.

Trump Adds Meeting With Sessions, FBI Director Wray On Charlottesville

Source: Talking Points Memo

By MATT SHUHAM Published AUGUST 14, 2017 9:50 AM

The White House added a meeting regarding the events in Charlottesville, Virginia to President Donald Trump’s schedule on Monday.

“Update: The President will meet with Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Wray on Charlottesville at 11:30AM,” the White House emailed in an update to the President’s schedule Monday morning slightly after 9 a.m. ET.

The added huddle comes amid fierce criticism of the President, from even within his administration, over Trump’s response to a terrorist attack against a group of counter-protesters by an apparent white supremacist.

Trump on Saturday condemned violence on “many sides” of the conflict in a statement following the deadly attack — that is, the white supremacist groups protesting the removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from a park in Charlottesville, and the various anti-fascist groups who had gathered in a counter-protest.

NY Post: Trump 'Badly Missed The Mark' With Lukewarm Charlottesville Response

By ESME CRIBB Published AUGUST 14, 2017 10:28 AM

One of President Donald Trump’s favorite news sources on Sunday took a stronger stance than he did, and condemned Trump’s own milquetoast remarks on a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, where one person died after a car plowed into a crowd of counter-protesters.

In an editorial titled “Trump badly missed the mark on Charlottesville,” the editorial board of the New York Post called for Trump to “find the right words.”

Trump on Saturday failed to address the hate groups at the rally, instead condemning “hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides — on many sides.”

“Really: That was it,” the editorial board wrote. “Yet ‘many sides’ didn’t drive a car into a crowd, an evident act of terrorism that killed Heather Heyer, 32, and hospitalized many more.”

The editorial board said the President shouldn’t have a difficult time summoning “a few Trumpian terms like ‘losers’ and ‘really, really bad people’ to describe the hundreds of neo-Nazis, Klansmen, white supremacists and the like who descended on the college town — not after one of them has killed an innocent.”

Illinois Senate Adopts Resolution Labeling Neo-Nazi Groups As Terrorists

Source: Talking Points Memo

By NICOLE LAFOND Published AUGUST 14, 2017 9:21 AM

In response to violence at a white supremacists rally in Charlottesville, Va. Saturday — in which a self-proclaimed member of the racist group drove his car into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing one — the Illinois state Senate adopted a resolution Sunday that takes a hard stance on white supremacy and neo-Nazi groups.

The resolution urges law enforcement officials to label white nationalist groups and neo-Nazis as terrorist organizations, according to the Chicago Tribune.

State Sen. Don Harmon (D), who sponsored the resolution, said it was “vital” to stand up and condemn the “hatred, bigotry and violence” that white nationalists displayed over the weekend.

“They are the heirs of the Ku Klux Klan and the Nazis. We fought two bloody wars in opposition to their ideologies. We must continue to fight those same twisted ideologies today,” he tweeted Sunday. “Diversity has always and will always make America stronger and better.”
