Mike Huckabee: When Trump 'Talks about Journalists Being Enemy of the People, They Are'

by Tamar Auber | Sep 1st, 2018, 10:21 pm

Shortly after Fox host Jeanine Pirro lambasted Attorney General Jeff Sessions in her scathing opening monologue Saturday night, she was joined by Mike Huckabee for a reaction to her call for Sessions to resign.

Huckabee, the father of White House press secretary Sarah Sanders agreed that the Department of Justice and the FBI were at fault and we’ve got “to get to the bottom of the corruption, the conspiracy, the collusion and the cover-up that’s going on in the Justice Department.” But he also blamed the media for not doing their jobs.

“There’s two big failures that are going on. One is in the Department of Justice, FBI,” Huckabee said during a discussion that veered into Christopher Wray document redactions and an alleged plot at the highest levels of the FBI to prevent Trump from being elected. “The government itself is not doing the job it’s supposed to do to hold accountable people who abuse their positions, use their government-funded taxpayer paid for jobs to politicize and weaponize the government against a particular party and candidate.”

He then said this: “The second, we have a media that is absolutely –so in their just disgust and hatred of Donald Trump — that they refuse to look at what ought to be something that makes them want to gag every day — at the cover-up of the highest levels of government. If we had a decent media, if we had a media that did its job of true journalism, you would have people asking the hard questions, demanding the answers, but we don’t have it. ”

CNN Key Races: 11 House seats move toward Democrats, 3 in direction of Republicans

By Terence Burlij, CNN

Updated 8:12 AM ET, Sun September 2, 2018

Washington (CNN)The battle for control of the US House is coming into sharper focus with November's midterm elections now less than 70 days away.

For Democrats, the path to the majority appears to run in large part through suburban, well-educated districts where disapproval of President Donald Trump's job performance could be hobbling GOP candidates. The party's prospects have improved as Democratic candidates continue to overperform in special election contests, with the latest example being last month's slim defeat in a reliably Republican central Ohio district. The result was further proof the party has a significant enthusiasm edge this cycle.

Despite those headwinds, there remain a few bright spots for the GOP. The party has a handful of incumbents who are running strong races in districts that would be tough in any environment, let alone one where the President's approval rating is stuck in the high 30s or low to mid-40s. The latest ABC News/Washington Post survey, released Friday, showed the President at 36% approval and 60% disapproval.

Ten weeks might not seem like a long time, but in politics it is a lifetime. The national dynamics can change in an instant, as we saw with the recent legal bombshells involving Michael Cohen and Paul Manafort. Then there was the stunning indictment of a sitting GOP member of Congress for allegedly misusing campaign funds, prompting Democrats to reprise their "culture of corruption" line of attack, which the party successfully deployed against Republicans in 2006.

In all, CNN is moving 14 seats -- 11 toward Democrats and three in the direction of Republicans. There are currently 11 seats held or vacated by Republicans that CNN rates as Lean Democratic or better, which would get the party almost halfway to the 23 it needs to gain in order to win control of the House. Of the 30 districts now rated as Toss-Ups, 28 belong to Republicans -- and Hillary Clinton won 12 of them in 2016.

US, Russia block formal talks on whether to ban 'killer robots'

UN meeting concludes without moving closer to binding international rules.

By JANOSCH DELCKER 9/1/18, 2:21 PM CET Updated 9/1/18, 6:56 PM CET

The United States and Russia were among a small number of countries that blocked the U.N. from moving toward talks on whether to ban so-called killer robots.

During a week of meetings in Geneva, which ended in the early hours of Saturday, a group at the United Nations’ Convention on Conventional Weapons (CCW) discussed whether to take negotiations on fully autonomous weapons powered by artificial intelligence to a formal level that could lead to a treaty banning them.

However, a list of non-binding recommendations that participating countries agreed on, seen by POLITICO, dodges the question of whether to move on to formal negotiations.

Mary Wareham, coordinator of the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots, said that Russia, the U.S., South Korea, Israel and Australia were the main countries opposing the call for action.

“It’s a disappointment, of course, that a small minority of large military powers can hold back the will of the majority,” she said.

Germany's Heiko Maas: 'Get up off the sofa and speak up' against far right

Source: Politico-Europe

‘If the Hitler salute is shown on our streets today once again, it will be a disgrace to our country.’

By PAUL DALLISON 9/2/18, 12:11 PM CET Updated 9/2/18, 12:17 PM CET

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said citizens must do more to tackle racism and the far right in the wake of a week of often violent protests in Chemnitz.

Mass told Bild am Sonntag that people must “get up off the sofa and speak up.”

“We must stand up to the right-wing extremists. We can’t duck away. We must show our faces against neo-Nazis and anti-Semites,” he said. “Only then will Germany’s reputation not be permanently marred by xenophobic crimes.”

He continued, “If the Hitler salute is shown on our streets today once again, it will be a disgrace to our country.”

Turkey calls US 'wild wolves', vows to abandon dollar in trade

Source: Agence France-Presse

AFP•September 2, 2018

Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) (AFP) - Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday vowed Ankara would pursue non-dollar transactions in trade with Russia and other countries, accusing the US of behaving like "wild wolves."

Both Turkey and Russia are reeling from punitive economic measures imposed by Washington.

"America behaves like wild wolves. Don't believe them," Erdogan told a business forum during a visit to Kyrgyzstan, in comments translated into Kyrgyz. He said his country was in negotiations with Russia over non-dollar trade.

"Using the dollar only damages us. We will not give up. We will be victorious," Erdogan told the meeting, attended by Kyrgyz and Turkish businessmen as well as government officials.

Dutch police still questioning Amsterdam stabbing suspect

Source: Associated Press

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Dutch police say detectives continue to question a 19-year-old Afghan man suspected of stabbing two American tourists at Amsterdam’s main railway station in what is being investigated as an extremist attack.

The suspect, identified only as Jawed S. under Dutch privacy rules, was shot and wounded by police after allegedly stabbing the Americans on Friday.

Police spokesman Ruben Sprong says that the suspect is being questioned Sunday in hospital and is scheduled to appear before an investigating judge on Monday in a behind-closed-doors hearing. Sprong says the Americans also remain hospitalized with “serious but non-life threatening injuries.” The Americans’ identities haven’t been released.

Amsterdam municipality said Saturday that, based on the suspect’s first statements, “he had a terrorist motive.” The statement didn’t elaborate on what he said.

DeSantis Slams Gillum as Far-Left Candidate

September 2, 2018 at 7:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 15 Comments

Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is going after his Florida gubernatorial rival Andrew Gillum (D)as the GOP congressman seeks to move on from controversy surrounding a racially-charged remark made last week, The Hill reports.

Said DeSantis: “This Andrew Gillum, he’s on the far-left socialist fringe. He’s a Bernie Sanders, Ocasio-Cortez type candidate.”

He added: “If you have a guy like this enacting a socialist agenda it’s going to absolutely destroy all the progress that Florida has made. He wants to turn Florida in to Venezuela.”

Obama readies fall campaign push, but some Dems say no thanks

BY ALEXANDER BOLTON AND AMIE PARNES - 09/02/18 06:00 AM EDT

Former President Obama is set to dive into the midterm elections next week with a speech in Illinois where he is expected to urge Democrats across the country to vote — addressing a problem that plagued the party in 2016.

-snip-

The former president will kick off his push by delivering a speech at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on Friday. In the weeks ahead, Obama will also campaign in California, Illinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania, a person familiar with his schedule said. Not all Democrats want Obama’s help.

Democratic candidates running in states that President Trump won by double digits in 2016 would prefer that the former president stay far away.

Some Democrats in pro-Trump states, such as Sens. Bob Casey (Pa.), Debbie Stabenow (Mich.) and Sherrod Brown (Ohio), say they hope Obama will campaign for them.

Others, such as Sens. Jon Tester (Mont.) and Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), want to keep the race locked on the battle between themselves and their state rivals, fearing a high-profile surrogate like Obama could distract from the strategy.

Parkland survivor raises thousands to place billboard of Trump's anti-Cruz tweet in Texas

Source: The Hill

BY AVERY ANAPOL - 09/02/18 08:05 AM EDT

Parkland survivor and gun control activist David Hogg has teamed up with the liberal Mad Dog PAC to raise thousands of dollars for an anti-Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) billboard in Texas.

A GoFundMe page organized by Hogg and Claude Taylor, the chairman of Mad Dog, topped its $6,000 fundraising goal, raising nearly $10,000 in less than 24 hours.

“President Donald Trump will be campaigning to help Sen. Ted Cruz win his re-election,” the page reads. “A rally is being planned, according to Trump ‘at the biggest stadium in Texas.’ We are planning to display the presidents own words about Cruz from 2016 on a mobile billboard, to remind Texans of the truth.”

The proposed sign will feature a February 2016 tweet from Trump criticizing Cruz as an “all talk, no action” politician.

Fox's Jeanine Pirro: Trump was 'framed'

BY TAL AXELROD - 09/02/18 07:01 AM EDT

Fox News host Jeanine Pirro said Sunday that she believes various forces in Washington have conspired to “frame” President Trump and bog down his administration with scandal and controversy.

“Nobody is looking at the corruption. It’s all one-sided, the corruption on the part of the Democrats," Pirro told radio host John Catsimatidis in an interview on AM 970 New York. "This president was framed. It’s that simple.”

“I’ve been in law-enforcement for over three decades. This guy was framed," Pirro continued. "The crisscrossing and the incestuous nature of our government in an attempt to prevent the outsider president that we wanted from getting elected is frightening.”

Pirro, a former judge and ardent supporter of Trump, echoed claims the president has made before that he was framed "for crimes he didn't commit."

In May, Trump tweeted an unverified claim that the FBI placed a mole in his campaign team and suggested that the agency was attempting to "frame" him for alleged wrongdoings associated with special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into the Trump campaign and Russia.
