Barbara Ehrenreich on Her Endorsement of Bernie Sanders

In a sprawling interview, Ehrenreich explains why Sanders is her choice for 2020, the joys of radical politics and why there’s no time to wait on capitalism to solve the climate crisis.

BY INDIGO OLIVIER

Excerpt:

Barbara Ehrenreich is an activist, journalist and author of over 20 books, including her classic 2001 title Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America. Ehrenreich is a contributing editor to In These Times where her work first appeared in 1977.

She, along with John Ehrenreich, coined the term “professional-managerial class” (PMC) in a famous 1977 essay to describe a class of “salaried mental workers” separate from the working class, whose main function is to reproduce capitalist culture and class relations.

Ehrenreich recently endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders in the 2020 Democratic race. She spoke with In These Times about the upcoming elections, socialism and the climate crisis.

National postal workers union endorses Sanders

BY ZACK BUDRYK - 01/30/20 11:47 AM EST

Excerpt:

The American Postal Workers Union, which represents more than 200,000 U.S. Postal Service employees, on Thursday said it is backing Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-Vt.) presidential campaign. They also backed the senator in his 2016 bid for the Democratic nomination.

“As with 2016, once again the Sanders campaign is boldly uplifting the goals and aspirations of workers,” union president Mark Dimondstein said in a statement. “Simply put, we believe it is in the best interests of all postal workers, our job security and our union to support and elect Bernie Sanders for president.”

“Senator Sanders was a champion of workers’ rights long before he became a candidate for president,” APWU Secretary-Treasurer Liz Powell added. “Like those who make up the core of the APWU, he is a firm believer in social and economic justice for all. It’s no wonder that he is ranked as the most popular member of the U.S. Senate.”

The influential union said its support for the Vermont senator was in part because he has “has released a series of proposals that would end the universal service requirement and also would make significant changes in the pricing structure of mail products.” Dimondstein also cites the immediacy of the election as the Trump administration has proposed “selling the entire public Postal Service to private corporate interests.”

Following the endorsement, the union said it will encourage its members to attend Sanders rallies, make individual campaign contributions and volunteer on the campaign.

The endorsement is Sanders’s fourth notable backing from a national union.

Sara Innamorato tosses support behind Bernie Sanders

Deeming him the type of leader who can rebuild the trust between the Democratic Party and America's working class, State Rep. Sara Innamorato is endorsing Bernie Sanders for president.

The Sanders campaign is set to roll out the endorsement Thursday morning and is expected to refer to Ms. Innamorato as a "beacon of Pennsylvania's progressive moment" who has led locally on issues that are important to the Vermont senator's campaign.

"What I see in Bernie Sanders is a willingness to engage with community leaders to think of community-centered, people-centered policy solutions that don't just come from the top down," Ms. Innamorato said.

Ms. Innamorato, who represents the 21st legislative district spanning Aspinwall, Millvale and parts of Pittsburgh's East End, dismissed warnings from other Democratic campaigns that a Sanders nomination would alienate rural voters.

"When you really go into these places, the collar counties, and talk about what is keeping people up at night, it's their health care," Ms. Innamorato said. "It's their access to opportunity. They're afraid that oil and gas is going to be the only industry they know in their community, and they're not sure that it's not making them sick."

The Sanders campaign, as part of its focus on winning back the "blue wall" states that Donald Trump carried in 2016, has focused resources on organizing volunteers in Pennsylvania -- which have hosted more than 800 phone banks, canvasses and events, according to a campaign official.

UFCW 21 endorses Bernie Sanders; Medicare For All

https://twitter.com/kentreporter/status/1222668050320760833

“Bernie Sanders has by far the most pro-worker labor agenda of any candidate, and we have already seen him use his platform during this campaign to support organizing in the industries we represent,” said Faye Guenther, president of UFCW 21, in the news release. “As a union, our fundamental goal is to expand worker democracy and power. We are so excited to see a candidate committed to expanding the electorate and inspiring even more people to engage with the democratic process, both in their workplaces and in this election.”

“We know what it’s like to go up against big corporations and win—and we know Bernie doesn’t back down from a fight,” said Kyong Barry, UFCW 21 executive board member and front-end supervisor at Albertsons in Auburn. “Union workers are facing an uphill battle at the federal level as corporations are attempting to systematically dismantle the protections the union movement has fought for. We’re supporting a candidate who understands the structural change needed to rebuild the union movement.”
