Sanders says he 'misspoke' about scaling back rallies after heart attack, vows 'vigorous' campaign

Sen. Bernie Sanders on Wednesday tamped down speculation that he would slow his presidential campaign after he suffered a heart attack last week, saying he plans to compete as vigorously as ever for the 2020 Democratic nomination.

The Vermont independent told NBC in an exclusive interview airing Wednesday night on "Nightly News" and Thursday on the "Today" show that his health scare has only strengthened his resolve, despite telling reporters a day earlier he planned to curtail his normally packed schedule.

"I misspoke the other day. I said a word I should not have said and media drives me a little bit nuts to make a big deal about it," Sanders said during the interview alongside his wife, Jane Sanders. "We're going to get back into the groove of a very vigorous campaign, I love doing rallies and I love doing town meetings.”

He added, "I want to start off slower and build up and build up and build up."

Sanders' daughter-in-law dies at 46 after cancer diagnosis

October 8 at 4:12 PM

The daughter-in-law of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has died, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. Rainè Riggs was 46.

The Lee & Martin Funeral Home in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania, says Riggs died Saturday, the day Sanders returned to Vermont after suffering a heart attack. Her obituary said she was diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer.

Riggs, a neuropsychologist, was married to Levi Sanders, who ran unsuccessfully for a New Hampshire congressional seat in 2018. Riggs’ obituary says she met Levi Sanders while the two worked at an emergency food shelter in Vermont.

The obituary said Riggs was the director of behavioral medicine at Dartmouth Medical School for several years, and she started the Palliative Care Department for Dartmouth Medical Center. She also owned Riggs Geriatric Psychology in Windsor, Vermont.

Riggs and Sanders had three children.

WMUR has learned that state Rep. Renny Cushing of Hampton, who was a member of the Sanders 2016 Granite State campaign steering committee, is endorsing Sanders again in the Vermonter’s current run for the White House.

WMUR has also learned that Cushing will co-chair the state campaign with former state Rep. Mindi Messmer of Rye, a 2018 U.S. House congressional candidate and current Executive Council candidate. Messmer announced her endorsement of Sanders during a rally last week at the University of New Hampshire.

“He has led the fight to improve wages for working people, end the corrupting influence of big money in politics and take bold action to stop climate change. As a longtime human rights activist, I am also proud to endorse a candidate who has been a lifelong opponent of capital punishment,” Cushing said.

Messmer, an environmental consultant and activist, has been a leader on clean drinking water initiatives on the Seacoast. She said Sanders is the leading candidate on addressing climate change.

“To me, climate change is the biggest issue and Bernie has the most comprehensive plan of any of the candidates on climate change and environmental justice,” Messmer said in an interview.
