Full Sanders' Campaign Statement on Offsetting All Carbon Emissions

WASHINGTON – Bernie 2020 today announced its commitment to renewable energy projects and offsetting all carbon emissions produced from campaign travel activities, as part of his longstanding commitment to the fight against global climate change.

“Bernie Sanders is a champion in the fight for climate justice and, like him, we know we need to address our emissions through action, not just rhetoric,” said Faiz Shakir, campaign manager. “We are proud to lead the way in the fight against climate change by acting boldly to move our energy system away from fossil fuels and towards sustainable energy sources.”

In an effort to balance out the carbon emissions produced by travel activities associated with both himself and his staff, Sanders is partnering with NativeEnergy, a Vermont-based leader in emissions reduction project investments, to support renewable energy projects and invest in carbon reduction projects. Bernie 2020 will also offset event venue and attendee-related emissions.

In 2016, Bernie also offset the emissions from all of his staff’s campaign offices and travel activities, and he addressed the emissions from his 2018 Vermont Senate campaign by supporting an innovative emissions reduction project on a Vermont dairy farm.

Bernie is a co-sponsor of the Green New Deal resolution and has introduced the boldest legislation in the Senate to combat climate change by rapidly transitioning away from fossil fuels to 100 percent renewable energy, creating millions of good-paying jobs in the process.

Bernie Sanders Campaign Becomes 2020's First To Promise To Offset Carbon Emissions

In a Democratic field where it’s increasingly hard to stand out on climate change, the Vermont senator is quick on the draw with a time-tested campaign move.

In a statement to HuffPost, the campaign said it plans to fund renewable energy projects to compensate for the carbon dioxide spewed by the planes and automobiles in which Sanders and his staff will travel while they barnstorm the nation ahead of the Democratic National Convention in July 2020.

“Bernie Sanders is a champion in the fight for climate justice and, like him, we know we need to address our emissions through action, not just rhetoric,” Faiz Shakir, Sanders’ campaign manager, said in a statement. “We are proud to lead the way in the fight against climate change by acting boldly to move our energy system away from fossil fuels and towards sustainable energy sources.”

Climate change is already a central plank of Sanders’ second White House bid. In December, two months before he announced his candidacy, the senator from Vermont hosted a televised town hall with climate scientists and advocates to discuss the crisis. In February, he attacked Trump for ignoring climate change in his State of the Union address. During his stump speeches, Sanders routinely skewers the fossil fuel industry and promises to enact a Green New Deal if elected.

Over the past two years, he’s introduced legislation to set a national target for 100 percent renewable electricity by 2050 and spend $146 billion rebuilding hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands with climate-resilient infrastructure and clean energy.

The announcement boosts Sanders’ bona fides on the issue and gives him a leg up in a crowded field of Democrats putting more attention on climate change than ever before. The move comes a week after the Sanders campaign became the first to unionize.

The Sanders campaign is buying carbon offsets from Vermont-based NativeEnergy, ... Though founded and run by a former utility lawyer, the company, as its name suggests, transferred a majority stake in its ownership to a consortium of Native American tribes in 2005.

Bernie Sanders Is Hiring a Former Hillary Clinton Staffer As Research Chief

By Gabriel Debenedetti

Bernie Sanders is preparing for the coming onslaught of attacks by hiring someone who knows the material best. The Vermont senator’s campaign is bringing on a veteran of Hillary Clinton’s research department who helped pull together the former secretary of State’s opposition-research book on Sanders in 2016, according to Democrats familiar with the decision.

Tyson Brody, Clinton’s deputy research director during the last election cycle, will direct Sanders’s research operation, Sanders campaign manager Faiz Shakir confirmed to Intelligencer on Wednesday. Brody, who worked on Clinton’s self-research as well as the Sanders oppo files last cycle, is the first Democrat to go from Clinton’s camp to Sanders’s 2020 campaign after their bitter primary fight.

“This campaign will comport itself according to the values of Senator Sanders, which means we will not engage in mudslinging or character assassination. That said, one of the reasons we hired Tyson is to prepare this campaign for whatever false accusations and allegations are leveled against us,” Shakir said in a statement. “Most importantly, Tyson’s work on this campaign will help us educate voters about the issues, policies and stances that the Senator has taken over the course of a lifetime fighting for working people.”

Amy's daughter died because she couldn't prove that she had health insurance. Our dysfunctional health care system is tearing families apart every day across this country. We need Medicare for All.

Three respected New Jersey progressive activists, join forces to helm the New Jersey for Bernie 2020 committee, aimed at electing Vermont Senator, Bernie Sanders, 46th President of the United States.

Larry Hamm, the Chairman of People’s Organization for Progress will serve as Chair; while Patricia Campos Medina a labor and community leader with more than 20 years of grassroots and Barry Brendel, Chair of Our Revolution New Jersey, a grassroots issues, an advocacy organization inspired by Bernie Sanders 2016 campaign, will serve as Vice Chairs.

All three positions are volunteer, and critical in helping build the path towards victory in the Garden State.

“Let me make this clear from the start, we are going to win New Jersey in 2020,” said Hamm.

“Bernie Sanders is right on the pressing issue before us from healthcare to climate change to income inequality. Bernie is right for this country and he is right for New Jersey,” he added. “I’m proud to have Patricia and Barry beside me in this campaign. Patricia has a wealth of experience in issue advocacy, coalition building and grassroots organizing and will be invaluable in delegate candidate recruitment and reaching out to diverse communities and advocacy groups that we feel are essential to the kind of grassroots campaign that Bernie Sanders wants to run in NJ.

“Working families in NJ and across the US are looking for a candidate with a clear understanding of their economic concerns, and Bernie Sanders is someone who has not deviated from his belief that what we need is a fundamental change in our political system so that it serves working people, not billionaires,” stated Campos-Medina. “Bernie has energized young and diverse voters with a message of hope for real economic reform that keeps the promise of America alive for our future generations. I am excited to engage in this grassroots effort to change our country by defeating the Trump politics of fear. We will do it by engaging new voters and building opportunities for young people to participate in the electoral process locally in their communities.”
