Hubby and I attended one of Jimmy Carter's Sunday School Classes in Plains, GA

Neither of us are Baptists, but we wanted to hear him speak.
It was in the late 90's; we came early to the area, in advance of an Elderhostel week.
We were told to be there early, as the church fills up.
We were seated in ca the second row, as he explained the New Testament Bible verses of the day, and
related it to contemporary situations.

After the service, he and Rosalyn graciously posed for photos on the church lawn, for all who wished. Those photos are favorites of mine.

And, yes, I voted for him both times, and would like to see a man of his caliber in the presidency again.

Try Michael Richards - "Kramer" on the Seinfeld show

He famously made a racist rant during a comedy act a few years ago. Look on Snopes for details.

August 27, 2013

I sometimes send the Snopes link not only to the one who sent it to me,

but, if earlier senders are still on the email, I will sometimes send it to those people, so that they have the opportunity to correct their mistake and send the Snopes link to the others to whom they sent it.

Yes, I realize it's unlikely that the earlier people do in fact correct their errors, but I feel good giving them the opportunity.

Occasionally, I reply to those who send such emails, that I do not wish to receive any political emails (they're nearly always of the RW variety - especially anti-Obama, anti- Muslim, or pro-gun.

"He never stopped serving his country," Pres. Obama on John Gilligan

John Gilligan was born in 1921 into a family well-known among Cincinnatians as funeral directors, or undertakers as we formerly called the profession. He graduated from the Univ. of Notre Dame, then served in the Navy in WWII, where he was awarded the Bronze Star. After the was he obtained a master's degree from the Univ. of Cincinnati and taught at Xavier University.

In 1953 he won the first of seven terms on Cincinnati City Council; then was elected for one term to the US Congress. He returned to Cincinnati city council after being defeated for re-election to Congress.
John Gilligan was elected Ohio's 62nd Governor in 1970, when Ohio's schools were in dire straits. He instituted the state income tax, and was defeated by James Rhodes in 1974. Gilligan then served in the Carter Administration.

He returned to the Univ. of Notre Dame in government and public policy studies. Returning to Cincinnati, he ran for the School Board and served two terms, holding office until he was 86. He also taught courses as a volunteer at UC's Institute for Retirement in Living.

We could use more dedicated public servants in the style of John Gilligan.

The bit about the reserving all the advance tickets

was publicized at least a week ago - likely on DU, but not sure where I saw it.

You are choosing to be there and then.

I don't know if I agree with that approach, but, if you believe strongly that is your route, be sure to have a trusted someone with you.

My feeling is that redoing the event heightens and magnifies the drama, perhaps more than is healthy, but then who am I to say. Please don't allow yourself to be in a state of agitation that works against you, not for you.
Peace, Denn. You're among friends.

Please find a way to give yourself credit

for getting past that horrible time and finding your way for the past 350-some days.

Denn, you know that some of us here have lost spouses or other dear ones, and the first year is always so hard, especially until the first anniversary is past. We don't know how we will handle it.

And then, we get past the first anniversary and we breathe a deep sigh of relief and realize that we have handled it, even if not always perfectly, and we know we can go forward to out new future.

You will have similar feelings and realizations, Denn, when the dreaded date is past.
I sincerely hope you have made plans to be busy and to be with people or someone you can trust and be comfortable with. Give yourself a break of having a decent meal, preferably in a restaurant, surrounded by the variety that humanity is. Play some sweet music, perhaps something you can sing along to.

And please come back and tell us all about your day and how it was.

KY Gov. Steve Bashear is a Democrat.

KY has had a majority registered Democrats, though they tend to vote Republican, unless the registrations have changed recently.

KY is just across the Ohio river from me; many KYians work in Ohio, and vice versa. Am glad to know they will be better cared for health-wise. Many years of tobacco farming and using have taken a toll; tobacco farming is giving way to other types of work, and hopefully, the health of KYians will improve.
