Forgive?

I struggle with that principle in general myself and likewise find it easier to forgive 'mere' ignorance in people. Have to since I live surrounded (almost drowned) by it where I retired to a little corner of the Midwest I call RedNeckLand - when they're not looking.

Leave aside arrogance. Any kind of willful ignorance is especially heinous and dangerous, especially in a supposedly educated person. I'd be a fool to expect much from people who brag on someone for almost making it to the 11th grade. And I admit that too many degreed folks don't really know much about anything; yet they're the ones without a leg to stand on. At least they obviously had a chance.

Until they had to leave for the sake of future political ambitions, Sarah and Todd belonged for several years to a radical right fascist group that advocates secession from the U.S. To me that's plain and simple treason. Why she didn't get hammered about it during the '08 campaign is beyond me. Maybe because our side figured it would get more GOP sympathy votes?

This is partly what explains my bottomless, utter contempt for the GOP and its tarbucket brigades. Regarding the latter, I haven't seen or heard much more sense from their degreed members either. And now they've driven poor Bob Woodard insane? Several times a year I write political letters to the editor of our local conservative rag sheet, and perhaps too often I finagle an excuse to whack at the neoConfederates, just daring them to go ahead and try to secede; THAT's when they'll see federal troops in the streets and maybe then they'll get a taste of what they deserve. Yes, I'm stupid enough to send such letters to print.

So far I've received 3 unsigned letters of support from people too scared to sign their names for obvious reasons. Among other niceties I've also had heavy glass beer bottles thrown at me from passing cars. When the GOP first took the House, a pickup load of the local alleged 'Patriots' showed up in front of my house cheering and waving their rifles. I went outside and smiled and waved while I took their picture. They took the hint and left. Haven't been back - so far. But they're out in the woods playing soldier all the time, preparing for that race war they claim the President wants to start.

Sheesh! All I wanted was a quiet, cheap place to retire and enjoy my books and animals. Sometimes it feels like it's already a war zone. Which it is, culturally speaking. I don't mean to whine even though I never dreamed things would turn out so hard. Among the totally apoliticals, I actually have a few friends. But I do owe future liberal retirees best wishes in having enough money to keep as far north as possible.

PS

And I say 'men' because they're certainly old enough to know better.

Something similar happened in this flyspeck RedNeckLand town (which you'll hear a lot more about so long as I have breath) where I retired. Some teenage boys took a black high school student down to the county courthouse at midnight, put a noose around his neck, and threw the other end over a tree limb. They thought it was funny. For some reason the family moved next day, and they had come here looking for a safe place to raise their family, away from big city crime. It just makes me sick. This place prides itself on cruelty, especially towards outsiders.

Peace Circle?

Unless it came at the victim's request, those men should all have been thrown under the jail. What's next, invite the Klan over for cookies and milk?

For some reason

... I'm reminded of my favorite Archie Bunker episode where he accidentally locked himself in his basement over the weekend while everyone else was gone. He was miserable in every possible way and toward the end, he fell on his knees to ask "God, if you exist, send me help. If you love me, show me your face!" (or words to that effect)

At that very moment George Jefferson comes hunting him and opens the basement door from the outside. Archie looks up at the figure silhouetted in light at the top of the stairs, and he screams "My God! Jefferson was right!"

Woodward's Lost His Marbles

... and gone entirely paranoid. If President Obama invited some people over for dinner, they'd start calling him a cannibal.

My contribution

I can stir the pot for free. Everybody should be glad Barack Obama is president instead of me. He's so much nicer.

True

... it is when coming from a bigot. But I for one - well, no, among many others - am proud to describe myself as a lifelong Irish American Catholic Socialist Yellow Dog Democrat DamnYankee I even say it in RedNeckLand where I retired, because it's so funny to watch their faces turn red.

This joy I receive in bearding the lion is why most people didn't think I'd ever see 30. And I've already outlived most of them!

GOP Interview Questions

.... always remind me of Groucho Marx, whose favorite question was "Have you stopped beating your wife? Yes or no?"

Also

... don't forget to accuse them of being Angry. Apparently that's some kind of mortal sin in the face of fascist efforts to make everything all better. The charge, false or true, looks especially bad on women because God only knows what we'll do next! Maybe that's the reason some people call blacks angry, too. Underhanded rightwing scare tactics.

Well, I for one still have the backbone to get angry and I don't care who knows it. But I admit it's ever so much finer when you can shred a belligerent opponent with a sweet innocent smile.

To be thrown off Hannity's show is quite an honor.

Possible Explanation

Like Rush, there are absolutely too many skeletons in his closet to allow a run for bigger office. Maybe he's achieved a balance of terror with his opponents, who might be too cautious to tackle him if he stays localized but would if he threatened to spread. I personally think (along with many others) that that's what really happened to Huey Long. Even one of his close relatives, Julian, whom I knew, believed FDR or at least one of his people was behind the assassination. Huey was brilliant, manipulative, and evil to the core. At least according to Julian. No love lost there. Under the circumstances, though, it could've been Julian himself. We'll never know.

About IrishAyes

Still an ardent Irish-American Catholic damnYankee Yellow Dog Democrat socialist after all these years. (cue Simon music) Army brat and wife for many years, now have been on the loose far longer than I was married. After my two red chows died, I took in a mini-beagle cross that I named Molly Maguire, thinking she might need a good Irish name like my original real one. Later she got a baby sister, a smooth-coat JRT I named Brigid after the greatest of the ancient Celtic goddesses. My great-grandfather and his son fought for Michael Collins and barely made it out of Ireland one step ahead of John Bull. They slipped over to Wales for new identities and then forward to the States for a fresh start. That makes me second generation of illegal but certainly justified immigrants. There are precious few people to whose defense I fly immediately, but the list includes Hillary Clinton, President Barack Obama even when I disagree with him - it happens! - and living Irish patriots Gerry Adams and Martin \\\'Mind Your Kneecaps\\\' McGuiness. I pray earnestly for a united and free Ireland rescued from all official British occupation, with every square inch of alleged \\\'ancestral lands\\\' now held immorally and illegally by the invaders returned to the rightful owners. Irish-only rule for Ireland. No foreign masters anymore! I find it passing strange when Brits chide ME about \'interfering\' in Irish politics!
