Genderqueer

Genderqueer (GQ; alternatively non-binary) is a catch-all category for gender identities other than man and woman, thus outside of the gender binary and cisnormativity. Genderqueer people may identify as one or more of the following:

having an overlap of, or blurred lines between, gender identity and sexual and romantic orientation.
two or more genders (bigender, trigender, pangender);
without a gender (nongendered, genderless, agender; neutrois);
moving between genders or with a fluctuating gender identity (genderfluid);
third gender or other-gendered; includes those who do not place a name to their gender;

Some genderqueer people also desire physical modification or hormones to suit their preferred expression. Many genderqueer people see gender and sex as separable aspects of a person and sometimes identify as a male woman, a female man, or a male/female/intersex genderqueer person. Gender identity is defined as one's internal sense of being a woman, man, both, or neither, while sexual identity refers to an individual's enduring physical, romantic, and/or emotional attraction to others. As such, genderqueer people may have a variety of sexual orientations, as with transgender and cisgender people.

In addition to being an umbrella term, genderqueer has been used as an adjective to refer to any people who transgress distinctions of gender, regardless of their self-defined gender identity, i.e. those who "queer" gender, expressing it non-normatively. Androgynous is frequently used as a descriptive term for people in this category, though genderqueer people may express a combination of masculinity and femininity, or neither, in their gender expression and not all identify as androgynous. However, the term has been applied by those describing what they see as a gender ambiguity.

In Britain, an Ominous Move to Conflate Journalism With Terrorism

A parliamentarian suggests that The Guardian has violated a terrorism law, even as the British government defends detaining David Miranda using the same statute.

Conservative parliamentarian Liam Fox, Britain's former defense secretary, is urging his country's top prosecutor to investigate whether The Guardian and its journalists violated The Terrorism Act 2000 while handling Edward Snowden's leaks.

He is focused on the newspaper's decision to partner with foreign publications like The New York Times. "There have been further accusations that The Guardian passed the names of GCHQ agents to foreign journalists and bloggers. Would such activities, if true, constitute an offense under the Terrorism Act 2000 or other related legislation?” Fox asked in a letter to the director of public prosecutions, adding a question about how a prosecution might be initiated.

These actions are ominous.

Schumer: Chicken Slaughtered, Raised In China Could Pose Major Risk

Chicken from China has officials on alert, including U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.)

As WCBS 880’s Jim Smith reported Sunday, Schumer said first, the U.S. Department of Agriculture only allowed chickens that had been processed in China to be sold in the U.S. Now, he said the USDA plans to green-light poultry raised and slaughtered in China.

This has never happened before, and it is a bad idea, Schumer argued.

“China has a terrible record on health safety, and chickens are one of the things that need the most care and inspections,” he said.

Schumer called the plan a huge change in policy, and a big mistake.

“China has been a massive source of food poisoning here in America for years,” he said.

A step closer to final approval, Schumer said a USDA report to Congress indicated aspects of the Chinese slaughter system to be equivalent to that of the U.S.

“Why is the USDA doing it?” he said. “We just don’t know.”

Greenpeace's 'hippie ship' open to public in S.F. - Rainbow Warrior

America's Cup yachts? Cruise ships? Forget all that. The big attraction Sunday along San Francisco's waterfront was the world's most famous "hippie ship."

Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior, the floating, green-hued hub for environmental activism, pulled into Pier 15 Friday and will remain through Nov. 19, open for free public tours, art shows, films, panel discussions and live music.

Up to 900 people a day are expected to visit the boat, made famous by a 1985 incident off the coast of New Zealand when the French bombed - and sank - its predecessor, the first Rainbow Warrior, during a nuclear weapons protest.

The new Rainbow Warrior (actually, the third overall) is a $33 million, custom-built sailboat outfitted with a helipad, and unique A-frame masts that give the boat stability and allow it to derive 90 percent of its power from the wind. It's designed to accommodate up to 32 crew members as they circle the globe blocking oil tankers, protesting deforestation and taking up other environmental crusades.

The job is not without its hazards. Its sister ship, the Arctic Sunrise, saw its crew of about 30 arrested in September by the Russian Coast Guard and imprisoned in Murmansk, awaiting trial for piracy after the crew attempted to string a protest banner across a Russian oil rig. They face 15 years in jail if convicted.

John McCain says NSA chief Keith Alexander 'should resign or be fired'

Source: Guardian UK

Senator John McCain has called for Keith Alexander to "resign or be fired" as the head of the National Security Agency, in an interview with the German news weekly Der Spiegel published on Sunday.

The senator for Arizona, a former Republican presidential candidate, said Alexander should be held accountable for the leaks of thousands of documents by the whistleblower Edward Snowden, which revealed NSA surveillance and spying on a massive scale. McCain said Snowden, who worked for the NSA as a contractor, should never have had access to classified information.

"And now we have a contractor employee, not a government employee, who has access to information which is, when revealed, most damaging to the standing prestige of the United States and our relations with some of our best friends," McCain said. "Why did Edward Snowden have that information? And what are we doing as far as screening people who have access to this information? It's outrageous, and someone ought to be held accountable."

President Barack Obama, the NSA and the congressional intelligence committee had responsibility for the sharing of classified information, he said.

Asked if Alexander should resign, McCain said: "Of course, he should resign, or be fired. We no longer hold anybody accountable in Washington."

Homosexuality illegal in 41 out of 53 Commonwealth countries – report

Anti-gay discrimination not on the agenda of this month's heads of government meeting in Sri Lanka

Homosexuality is illegal in 41 out of the 53 Commonwealth countries, a report released on Monday reveals.

Despite this, the forthcoming Commonwealth heads of government meeting (Chogm) in Sri Lanka has elected not to discuss the issue of anti-gay discrimination.

Commissioned by the Kaleidoscope Human Rights Foundation and compiled by LGBT activists throughout the Commonwealth, the report calls for Commonwealth countries to repeal anti-gay legislation, with an immediate moratorium on enforcement.

“If you look at the world as a whole, around about 40% of nations have state-sponsored homophobia,” said Kaleidoscope’s spokesman, Douglas Pretsell.

“Half of those – about 54% – are in the Commonwealth. If you look at the rest of the world not inside the Commonwealth, it’s only 24.5% – so the Commonwealth has a big problem.

“These are laws that make it illegal to be gay.”

Hillary Clinton stresses unity in S.F. speech

Source: SFGate

Without taking partisan sides or naming names, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton excoriated national leaders Saturday for the federal government shutdown and Washington's gridlocked politics, saying stalemates are eroding America's standing internationally.

In a paid speech to an audience of a few thousand people at the National Association of Realtors convention in San Francisco, the Democrat - and potential 2016 presidential candidate - cut a centrist path before the politically mixed audience of Realtors from around the U.S. and dozens of countries.

Later, she and her daughter, Chelsea, headlined a fundraiser at the Regency Ballroom for the Clinton Foundation's Millennial Network, an event aimed at voters younger than 30. Clinton has made a series of paid speeches around the country in recent weeks. She reportedly was paid $200,000 for each of two speeches at Goldman Sachs events last month.

She was decidedly more political during an appearance earlier Saturday in Los Angeles, where she urged Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform. The effort has been stalled by House Republicans who do not support a pathway to citizenship for those living in the country illegally.

Outside Moscone Center, about 150 supporters of the Ready for Hillary group that's trying to launch her candidacy rallied and waved signs. Kate Maeder, an organizer with the group, said it is important to elect a woman to the White House.

"She would be such a role model for generations of young girls to show that they could achieve whatever they want," Maeder said.

Colorado College Job Application Features The Word ‘Queer’

A word on job applications at Colorado College has sparked a controversy.

The word “queer” appears in the voluntary gender section responses of the applications and the private school in Colorado Springs stands by the wording.

“I’m a little skeptical of what that could present to potential employees,” Colorado Collage Quinn Webb said.

The options include to not disclose, “male”, “female,” “transgender” or “queer.” The “queer” option is stirring up some controversy. Rex Fuller with Denver’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender (LGBT) Community Center weighed in.

“It’s true that for many years lots of people were called ‘queer’ and it was a derogatory term and they find it offensive, but there’s definitely a younger generation that is trying to reform the term and give it new meaning,” Fuller said.

That’s the stance Colorado College is taking. They say the term was added to be more inclusive. Students with the Office of Minority and International Students agree. Student Marley Jamason says the term “queer” is changing.

(CO) to Fund School Construction Through Marijuana Tax

Marijuana smokers in Colorado will be able to legally light up from January 1, but they’ll have to pay the state government for the pleasure following a statewide vote.

Voters in the Rocky Mountain state approved a ballot measure to tax legally sold recreational marijuana, with a 15 per cent excise levy on wholesale deals and a sales tax of up to 15 per cent on retail sales.

The two taxes are projected to bring in $US70 million ($AU73.92 million) per year. Up to $US40 million ($AU42.24 million) of that money is earmarked for school construction, with the remainder slated to pay for state regulation of marijuana and drug education.

Colorado voted to legalize marijuana in last year’s federal election, with 55 per cent of voters in favour of the measure. The measure to tax the drug passed far more handily, with voters opting for the tax by approximately a two-to-one count.
