Family spokesman: Alabama woman leaves to join ISIS in Syria

Source: AP

A spokesman for a Muslim couple in Alabama says their 20-year-old daughter fled a Birmingham suburb to join ISIS militants in Syria after being recruited on the Internet.

Attorney Hassan Shibly spoke at a Birmingham mosque on Monday on behalf of the parents of the young woman, whom he identified only as Hoda.

Shibly said Hoda left in November after being "brainwashed" for an undetermined length of time. He says the woman's actions go against the family's wishes and against the teachings of Islam.

The spokesman added that Hoda's family has been in contact with U.S. law enforcement and government officials since she disappeared.

A new shopper’s high for 420: Marijuana-themed products are smoking hot

Marijuana is not just for getting baked anymore. As it becomes legal in more states, the wacky tobacky also is leaving its leafy green mark on American marketing.

From backpacks and bed sheets to toilet seats and thong underwear, cannabis culture is inspiring pot-themed products faster than Wiz Khalifa can burn through a dime bag.

And in advance of 420 — a kind of Stoner’s New Year celebrated on April 20 — plenty of people have been shopping for legal ganja goods, even where the drug is still vilified and against the law.

On a recent day, Kerry Baker (yes, that’s her real name) browsed the marijuana-themed products at Spencer’s Gifts in Oak Park Mall.

“420’s (here) and I have to represent,” said the 25-year-old Leawood woman, who sports a small marijuana-leaf tattoo on her neck. “For so long, weed was just underground. Now it’s starting to come into the light. And even though it’s not legal here yet, just look at all these weed products you can buy at the mall. There’s a growing market for this stuff. And that probably means more changes are on the way.”

Of course, critics are holding their noses at this trend. Some decry the products’ influence on children. Others worry about the message they send about a drug that’s still federally illegal.

Poland in denile of its role in the holocaust

WARSAW (Reuters) - Poland will summon the United States' ambassador in Warsaw over an article written by a top U.S. intelligence official on Poland's alleged responsibility for the Holocaust during World War Two, a foreign ministry spokesman said on Sunday.

The article by FBI director James Comey, published in the Washington Post last week, prompted an outcry in Poland and drew condemnation in the media and from politicians.

A foreign ministry spokesman said on his Twitter account that the U.S. ambassador would be summoned to the ministry over the article, and that Poland would demand an apology.

Comey's article in the Washington Post earlier this week said: "In their minds, the murderers and accomplices of Germany, and Poland, and Hungary, and so many, many other places didn’t do something evil. They convinced themselves it was the right thing to do, the thing they had to do."

Poland says the passage wrongly implied it was complicit in the Nazi genocide of European Jews.

These Photos Of Legal Recreational Marijuana Users Shatter Stereotypes

The stereotypical marijuana user -- the "stoner" -- hasn't adequately represented the actual people who responsibly enjoy marijuana for some time. But the stoner myth seems more antiquated than ever as more states lift prohibitions on marijuana use.

To combat these stoner myths of the past, Drug Policy Alliance has put together a set of stereotype-shattering stock photos depicting modern, real-life marijuana users from all walks of life.

Shot in March in Boulder, Colorado -- where recreational marijuana is legal -- the DPA photos feature adult marijuana users in their 30s all the way up to their 60s, doing everyday activities while also consuming marijuana in a variety of ways, from joints to vaporizers to pens.

"Marijuana is being covered by the media in an increasingly sophisticated and nuanced way now that the laws are changing and more people are ‘out’ as marijuana users," said Sharda Sekaran, managing director of communications for DPA. "We all know that many marijuana smokers look more like your Aunt Bettie or your accountant than "The Dude" from "The Big Lebowski," but most images in the public sphere still do not reflect this."

Recap: Plenty of free pot samples, and even sales, at Cannabis Cup’s first day

For the second year in a row, the U.S. Cannabis Cup — the largest event in High Times magazine’s portfolio — kicked off Saturday at the Denver Mart with speakers and vendors from throughout the country, and plenty of free marijuana.

The free pot samples came as a surprise to many after Colorado’s Marijuana Enforcement Division released a memo threatening sanctions against state-licensed cannabis shops that took part in the Cup’s tradition of distributing samples of marijuana and pot products to attendees. Instead, marijuana flowers, hash and edibles were distributed by out-of-state companies with nothing to lose.

With plenty of tourists in the crowds, the sight of the complimentary cannabis was a welcome one.

A steady crowd of thousands of marijuana enthusiasts lined up around the block to be the first to see the latest in growing, extraction and smoking accessories at the annual expo. Bill Stewart, 63, drove from Madison, Wis., to see his first Cannabis Cup.

“I’ve been smoking for 40 years and just visited my first dispensary,” said Stewart. “It’s kind of unbelievable.”
