Texas hunters to auction permit to kill black rhino

Washington (AFP) - A Texas hunting club said Friday it aims to raise up to a million dollars for endangered black rhinoceroses by auctioning off a permit to kill one in Namibia.

"First and foremost, this is about saving the black rhino," said Ben Carter, executive director of the Dallas Safari Club, which is hosting the auction early next year. Black rhinos are internationally considered an endangered species and the World Wildlife Fund says about 4,800 are alive in the African wild.

Carter said in a statement sent to AFP that the Namibian government "selected" his hunting club to auction a black rhino hunting permit for one of its national parks.The permit is expected "to sell for at least $250,000, possibly up to $1 million. The Conservation Trust Fund for Namibia's Black Rhino will receive 100 percent of the sale price," said the statement.

Namibia has an annual quota to kill up to five black rhinos out of the southern African nation's herd population of 1,795 animals.

Nevada Teacher Killed Trying To Protect Students From Shooter Is Being Hailed As A Hero

The teacher who was killed Monday morning trying to protect middle school students from a shooter on the grounds has been identified as Michael Landsberry, according to NBC. Two people — the teacher and the shooter — died at Sparks Middle School near Reno, Nev. Two others, both minors, were also injured. Landsberry was 45 years old and had a wife and two stepdaughters, according to the Associated Press.

Witnesses told the Reno Gazette-Journal that a boy wearing a Sparks Middle School uniform opened fire outside the school Monday morning. Police have not confirmed how the shooter died, but multiple media reports say he killed himself. He was a student at the school. A witness told the Gazette-Journal that a teacher told the shooter to put the gun down before he was shot.

The student said: "We were at school, we were by the basketball court and we heard a pop, like a loud pop, and everybody was screaming. And then the teacher came to investigate. I thought it was a firecracker at first, but the student was pointing a gun at the teacher after the teacher told him to put it down. And then the student fired a shot at the teacher and the teacher fell and everybody ran away. ... While we were running, we heard about four or five more shots."

Landsberry's sister-in-law told the Gazette-Journal: "To hear he was trying to protect those kids doesn’t surprise me at all. He could have ducked and hid, but he didn’t. That’s not who he is."

6 arrested in player's home vandalism

Six people were arrested on charges they were among hundreds of young partygoers who trashed a former NFL player's vacation home, and police said more arrests were expected.

The arrests on Thursday came after former New England Patriots and Los Angeles Raiders offensive lineman Brian Holloway said he signed papers authorizing the Rensselaer County sheriff to bring charges in the Labor Day weekend party, which was attended by up to 400 teenagers.

Holloway said that among those charged was a young man he had taken into his family for a time as a homeless teen, who's accused of organizing and promoting the party. He said investigators have told him the number of people charged could end up in the hundreds as they work through the sheer volume of participants.

"Everyone that broke the law, I'm pressing charges against," Holloway said. "The parents had a chance and students had a chance to come forward, and only four did."
