"Marriage as an institution is not so much threatened by same-sex couples as it is by...
...heterosexuals' increasing indifference to it."
By Andrew Rafferty
Potential 2016 presidential candidate Mike Huckabee's forthcoming book, "God, Guns, Grits and Gravy," is mostly filled with his common defenses of conservative ideals. But his comments on same-sex marriage may surprise even his evangelical supporters.
"The claim that same-sex marriage is destroying society is actually greatly overstated," Huckabee writes. "Christians who themselves abandoned the primacy of lifelong marriage to follow the divorce and remarriage customs of a secular society have as much to answer for as those who militantly push to redefine marriage."
He later adds, "Marriage as an institution is not so much threatened by same-sex couples as it is by heterosexuals' increasing indifference to it."
It is different tone than many are used to hearing from the 2008 Iowa caucus winner who threatened to leave the Republican for softening its opposition to gay marriage.

Romney huddling with key members of 2012 team tonight ("he’d be an outstanding president")
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2015/01/07/romney-huddling-with-key-members-of-2012-team-tonight/
Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, who has been encouraged by his allies to consider another run for the White House, will meet with several of his former political advisers Wednesday in Menlo Park, Calif., for a private dinner.
The dinner will be held at a Madera, a Michelin-starred New American restaurant about a mile from Stanford Universitys campus, shortly after he lectures at Stanford University on presidential politics, according to Republicans familiar with his plans. Kelli Harrison, a spokesperson for Romney, confirmed the details of Romneys swing through Northern California.

But some Romney associates, including prominent donors and consultants, have privately insisted that he remains interested in a possible return to the national stage, and that he is waiting to see how the GOP field unfolds before he makes a final decision on his future.
Talking to lots of people close to him, I know the idea is still alive and certainly there are many of us who think hed be an outstanding president, said former Minnesota Republican congressman Vin Weber, a former Romney adviser, in an interview Wednesday. But they will make a mistake if they think that his status allows him to wait for a long period of time. What Bush understands is that the advantage of having so-called front-runner status is that a lot of people will sign up early on.
Day 1 of "Republican-led Congress" is all about abortions. So much for "Where are the jobs?"
By Elise Viebeck - 01/06/15 05:34 PM EST
House Republicans are renewing their effort to ban abortion after the first 20 weeks of pregnancy on the disputed premise that fetuses feel pain at that stage.
On the first day of the new Congress, Reps. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) and Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) reintroduced legislation to stop women from terminating pregnancies starting in the middle of the second trimester.
The bill, known as the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, previously passed the House in June 2013.
"More than 18,000 'very late term' abortions are performed every year on perfectly healthy unborn babies in America," Franks said Tuesday.

Pennsylvania Chinese food warehouse infested by "flying, crawling, and defecating" rats and birds
In a newly released letter to the facility, the FDA details the results of the inspection, which took place in October, including a rodent nest inside a box that was thawing ribs, rodent carcasses littering the first floor of the facility, birds flying through and defecating on the food supplies, bite marks on the food cartons, and feces observed in and around the storage area. The FDA also observed workers smoking while handling the food products in the facility, as well as workers indiscriminately using rodent poison to kill of the pest infestations, without taking proper care to make sure that the pesticide did not make its way into the food itself.
"FDA has serious concerns that our investigators found your firm operating under these conditions," the FDA letter said. "Further, your response states that your firm is committed to maintaining and operating a facility which provides the highest quality service to its customers and to the consuming public. We do not consider this response acceptable because you failed to provide documentation for our review, which demonstrates your noted corrective actions.

Chris Christie Pushed Port Authority To Give Contract To Jerry Jones' Firm
Source: International Business Times
Less than two years before Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones paid for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christies tickets and travel to NFL games, government documents show Christie personally pushed the Port Authority to approve a lucrative contract for a firm part-owned by Jones. Christie nonetheless accepted the gifts from Jones, despite New Jersey ethics rules barring gifts to public officials from persons or entities that those officials deal with, contact, or regulate in the course of official business.
On March 19, 2013, Christie and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued a press release announcing their selection of Legends Hospitality LLC to operate the observation deck on the top floor of One World Trade Center. The next day, the Port Authority board -- which is appointed by Christie and Cuomo -- specifically cited the governors announcement in voting to approve the contract for the company, which is jointly owned by the Dallas Cowboys, New York Yankees and Checketts Partners Investment Fund.
The Port Authority press release announcing the vote quotes Dallas Cowboys executive Jerry Jones, Jr. as saying: "We are humbled to have been chosen to operate the Observatory Deck."
The Wall Street Journal first reported the news that Jones has business with the Port Authority. That story followed an International Business Times report about how Christies acceptance of gifts from Jones may conflict with New Jersey ethics rules because the gifts followed Christies administration delivering big tax subsidies to the NFL.

Jebby backs off a tad on that 1994 "we shouldn't elevate sodomy" op-ed, but JUST a tad. USA! USA!

As marriage equality arrives in Florida, the Miami Herald asked former Gov. Jeb Bush, an apparent Republican presidential candidate, for his thoughts on the developments.
It ought to be a local decision. I mean, a state decision, Bush said on Sunday. The state decided. The people of the state decided. But its been overturned by the courts, I guess. In a written statement yesterday, Bush offered a little more depth.
To be sure, this represents an evolution in the former governors approach. During his 1994 gubernatorial campaign, Bushs first bid for public office, he wrote an op-ed that wasnt respectful at all. On the issue of gay rights, Bush wrote, We have enough special categories, enough victims, without creating even more, he wrote. Bush added, Should sodomy be elevated to the same constitutional status as race and religion? My answer is No.
The AMC Walking Dead marathon was one tasty burger...
...a lot of answered questions, since I missed a lot of episodes (realized I had missed ALL of seasons 3 and 4).
Won't do spoilers here. Fans of the show know the brutal, landmark episodes.
One of my favorites was the interplay between Beth and Darryl in the "peach schnapps / moonshine" episode...quite touching.
Watching the entire series in a couple of days made me want to watch cartoons or a Will Ferrell movie or SOMETHING to "cleanse the palate."
Went to Netflix and "filled in the blanks," watching the ones I missed while sleeping and attending to life outside of the house.
Huckabee walks away from Fox show "to ascertain if support exists for another Presidential run"
Mike Huckabee
Saturday, January 3 at 4:56pm ·
This evening I wanted to share with you some news that is very personal to me. Because you have been such a good friend and a strong supporter of all my efforts, I wanted you to know first that tonight I will do more than just say goodnight on my Fox show. I will say goodbye.
This is the last edition of Huckabee on the Fox News Channel. It has been the ride of a lifetime, and I have never had so much fun in my life. But I also realize that God hasn¹t put me on earth just to have a good time or to make a good living, but rather has put me on earth to try to make a good life.
There has been a great deal of speculation as to whether I would run for President. I won't make a decision about running until late in the spring of 2015, but the continued chatter has put Fox News into a position that is not fair to them. The honorable thing to do at this point is to end my tenure here at Fox so I can openly talk with potential donors and supporters and gauge support. As much as I have loved doing the show, I love my country more, and feel that it may be time for me to leave a zone of comfort to engage in the conflicts that have almost destroyed the bedrock foundations of America. I feel compelled to ascertain if the support exists strongly enough for another Presidential run. So as we say in television, stay tuned!
