Miles Archer
Miles Archer's JournalSo somehow, I got hooked on the show "Blue Bloods."
First time I watched it, my initial impression was that Tom Selleck was painfully wooden, and that Donnie Wahlberg had just graduated from the John Travolta Saturday Night Fever School Of Acting ("He hit my hair! I spend all day workin' on my hair and he hit my hair!" .
Being an ensemble cast, though, means that it can grow on you (or not). I've been binge watching it on Netflix. Bebe Neuwirth (Cheers / Frasier) had a very nice 6 episode arc in Season 4. I'm on Season 5 now. There's more nuance in Selleck's performance than you might suspect after watching only one episode. Wahlberg is still Wahlberg but he's had a few moments where he transcended the Travolta thing.
All in all, not a bad show.
It's mind-boggling that in 1970 you could have heard BOTH of these performances on the SAME ticket.

It's the TRIUMPHANT RETURN of the CHURCH LADY. Except now she is "Tracy" and posts on Newsmax.
OK, the premise:

Menu for lunch served on The Titanic on the day it sank sells at auction for $88K
The Titanics last lunch menu, saved by first-class passenger Abraham Lincoln Salomon, has been sold at auction for $88,000.
The menu features light items like consommé and dumplings, and heartier offerings from the grill like grilled mutton chops and the guests choice of mashed, fried, or baked potatoes. Finally, there are the buffet options smoked sardines, potted roast beef, veal and ham pie, or corned ox tongue and finally, an assortment of cheese Cheshire, Roquefort, Cheddar, and Camembert, to name a few.
To wash it all down, lunch also included an iced draught Munich lager beer, for $3 or $6, depending on size preference.
The menu was sold by online auctioneer Lion Heart Autographs, along with two other artifacts from the Titanics Lifeboat 1.

Mario Batali Has Choice Words for Pope Francis: ‘Why Would He Meet with That Woman?’
Mario Batali Has Choice Words for Pope Francis: Why Would He Meet with That Woman?

During a cooking demonstration at New York Citys Eataly cooking school, as a part of the New York edition of Identità Golose (an international cooking convention in Milan), TV personality and Italian restaurant guru Mario Batali had something to say about Pope Francis and the encounter:
I am going to potentially meet (Pope Francis), and I want to ask him just one question: Why would the Pope want to meet the one woman who wouldnt want to give out marriage certificates to gay people? Mario Batali said. He received enthusiastic applause for his comment from an audience that had been paying rapt attention to the chefs demo of homemade goat cheese tortelloni (a larger tortellini).
Eventually Batali relented, letting audience members know that it seemed unbelievable that the Pope he knows would even entertain a meeting with Davis. I think they made it up on the Internet because this is not that guy, he said. This is a guy who is eating with the hungry and homeless people. Hes not going to meet someone whos refusing to do something for people. Hes just not that guy.
The Vatican yesterday issued a statement saying, The pope did not enter into the details of the situation of Mrs. Davis, and his meeting with her should not be considered a form of support of her position in all of its particular and complex aspects.

VATICAN CITY - The Vatican on Friday distanced Pope Francis from Kim Davis, the focal point in the gay marriage debate in the U.S., saying she was one of dozens of people the pope greeted in Washington and that their encounter "should not be considered a form of support of her position."
After days of confusion, the Vatican issued a statement Friday clarifying the circumstances of Francis' Sept. 24 encounter with Davis, a Kentucky county clerk who was jailed for refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses.
In a statement, the Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said Francis met with "several dozen" people at the Vatican's embassy in Washington just before leaving for New York.
Lombardi said such meetings are normal on any Vatican trip and are due to the pope's "kindness and availability." He said Francis really had only one "audience" in Washington: with one of his former students and his family. "The pope did not enter into the details of the situation of Mrs. Davis and his meeting with her should not be considered a form of support of her position in all of its particular and complex aspects," Lombardi said.
