Condoleezza Rice: Trump stands for American values and seeks to act in the best interests of the US

President Donald Trump may sound different than other presidents, but he believes in American values and tries to act in the best interest of the United States, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told CNBC on Wednesday.

"I believe every president of the United States stands for our values," said Rice, who served as secretary of State and national security advisor during the presidency of George W. Bush. "You heard President Trump say, for instance, after the Syrian chemical attack, we can't let that stand. What he was saying was the president of the United States can't let that stand."

From the sidelines of the KPMG Women's PGA Championship and KPMG Women's Leadership Summit at the Olympia Fields Country Club in Illinois, Rice said on "Squawk Box" Trump knows the importance of alliances and expects him to forge ties with Democracies around the world.

"While the language may be different, and we might talk about needing to deal with policy, I think you're going to see ... that Americans' interests in values are always linked," Rice said. "It's early days in this administration. Let's remember that."

Carl's Jr. fined $1.45 million by Los Angeles for allegedly underpaying employees

On Monday, L.A. City Attorney Mike Feuer announced that the city is fining Carl’s Jr. in the amount of $1.45 million, alleging that seven of its locations had failed to pay 37 workers the legal minimum wage between July and December 2016, reports The Los Angeles Times.

As it stands, the legal minimum wage in California is $10.50 per hour, but Feuer told the LA Times that the seven Carl’s Jr. locations only paid out between $10 and $10.25 per hour. In total, Carl’s Jr. reportedly underpaid its employees $5,400.

Feuer and the city of L.A. aren’t just suing for lost wages, though. According to Fox 11, the city has ordered Carl’s Jr. to pay $910,010 in penalties to the 37 workers (fines were assessed daily since the initial infraction), as well as $541,423 in fines for other infractions, which include the failure to post signs displaying the wage laws, and the failure to allow city investigators to contact certain employees.

However, CKE Restaurants Holdings Inc. — the company that owns Carl’s Jr., as well as Hardee’s, Red Burrito and Green Burrito — has since blamed a payroll error for the wage discrepancy, and claims they’ve already issued back payment to the affected employees.

Mo Brooks (R-AL) quaking in his booties over past criticism of "Serial Adulterer" Trump. SAD!

GOP senate candidate may lose primary over past criticism of ‘serial adulterer’ Trump

Even though Trump has poor poll ratings in much of the country, he is still very popular in Alabama. And as The Hill reports, strategists for Brooks’ Republican primary rival, Alabama Sen. Luther Strange, are considering ways to use Brooks’ past criticism of Trump against him in their race for Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ old seat.

“Brooks declared during last year’s GOP presidential primary that he could not trust a ‘serial adulterer’ like Trump, then offered Trump only lukewarm support in the general election against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton,” The Hill writes. “Alabama Republicans have in the past punished GOP lawmakers perceived as anti-Trump at the ballot box.”

Brooks, for his part, brushed off his past criticism of Trump as simply part of politics, and he said that once the choice boiled down to Trump and Hillary Clinton, he easily found Trump to be the superior choice.

Nonetheless, University of Alabama professor and local political expert William Stewart tells The Hill that Brooks’ past attacks will be strong fodder to use against him.

Senator: Trump "seemed especially confused" at WH TrumpCare meeting

“A senator who supports the bill left the meeting at the White House with a sense that the president did not have a grasp of some basic elements of the Senate plan — and seemed especially confused when a moderate Republican complained that opponents of the bill would cast it as a massive tax break for the wealthy,” the Times reported a senate staffer revealed.

The senator also said that Trump said he would navigate tax reform later, and seemed to ignore the tax implications that are part of the new health bill.

Trump then went on to declare victory of the meeting.

“I just finished a great meeting with the Republican Senators concerning HealthCare,” he tweeted. “They really want to get it right, unlike OCare!”

“If we don’t get it done it’s just going to be something that we’re not going to like and that’s OK and I understand that very well,” Trump said before the press was asked to leave the meeting.

Trump International Hotel & Tower in Toronto dumps "Trump" branding. Make Canada GREAT again!

The owner of the Trump International Hotel & Tower in Toronto has reached a deal that would remove President Donald Trump’s name from the front of the building.

Bloomberg reports that JCF Capital ULC, which owns the Trump-branded building in downtown Toronto, has reached a buyout deal with the Trump organization to have Trump signage removed from the building as early as August 1 this year.

Although the report doesn’t say definitively that the Trump branding is being removed to counter the president’s toxic brand, it does note that the hotel has become a lightning rod for anti-Trump protesters in the country.

“The agreement to remove the Trump brand marks the first step toward revamping the property, which has faced a history of construction delays and lawsuits,” Bloomberg writes. “Most recently, it’s been a site for protests against the U.S. president’s comments disparaging women, Mexicans, and Muslims, even though his company has no ownership stake in the property.”
