Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Ric Ocasek, lead singer of the rock band The Cars, died Sunday in New York at age 75.

Police said they received a call around 4 p.m. for an unconscious male at a townhouse on East 19th Street. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Law enforcement sources confirmed the deceased was Ocasek.

Ocasek and his band were inducted into the Rock Hall in 2018. The institution described the band as "hook-savvy with the perfect combo of new wave and classic rock."

The band had 13 top-40 singles, and Ocasek went on to a successful producing career after The Cars broke up in the late 1980s.

Now, as the Oct. 8 anniversary of his confirmation nears, the New York Times reports it has uncovered and corroborated a previously unreported claim of sexual misconduct against Kavanaugh, and that it found the FBI interviewed none of the potential witnesses. The story, published Saturday evening, compelled several Democrats to demand a new investigation into the Supreme Court Justice.

Even before the recent spate of sexual misconduct allegations, murmurs among Kavanaugh opponents fixated on whether he had lied under oath before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Saturday’s story from the Times quickly raised new questions about whether Kavanaugh perjured himself and reignited calls for his impeachment.

Impeachment proceedings are contingent on Democrats controlling the House, the only body that can bring an article of impeachment. The current House breakdown is 235 Democrats, 198 Republicans, one Independent and one vacancy, according to the Cook Political Report, which puts impeachment in the realm of political possibility.

Yet Kavanaugh’s removal is exceedingly unlikely, given the supermajority threshold in the Senate, where there are 51 Republicans and 49 Democrats. The “supermajority” threshold for removal is exceedingly high by design: The delegates crafted it to prevent politics from driving the outcome, instead ensuring any misconduct was offensive enough to have bipartisan support for removal.

On two separate occasions, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh exposed himself to classmates at Yale University in the 1980s, according to new reporting from New York Times reporters Robin Pogrebin and Kate Kelly.

The two published details of the incidents, one of which involved Deborah Ramirez, whose allegations were not fully investigated during Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings in 2018, in their new book, The Education of Brett Kavanaugh: An Investigation. The Times published an excerpt of the book on Saturday. In it, they say have found seven sources who were familiar with Ramirez’s allegations that Kavanaugh “pulled down his pants and thrust his penis at her” at a party. They also detail a previously unreported story that Kavanaugh attended another party “where friends pushed his penis into the hand of a female student.”

Democratic presidential candidates including Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), former U.S. Representative Beto O’Rourke, and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro have called for Kavanaugh to be impeached.
