Amazon Kenosha shipped almost 1 million items per day at peak

Amazon.com Inc. has revealed just how busy the company was over the holiday shopping season, and the impact it had on southeastern Wisconsin.

The global online retailer’s Kenosha fulfillment center, for example, shipped almost 1 million items per day for three days straight.

Overall, Amazon shipped more than 1 billion items worldwide through Prime and Fulfillment by Amazon, a record for the company. Its workforce ballooned to 200,000 employees to keep up with the record-breaking demand. More than 1,000 seasonal employees were hired in Kenosha to meet its holiday rush.

In the past two years, Amazon has opened more than 12 new facilities. About 20 of its fulfillment centers include robotic technology, with 45,000 robotic units helping employees complete shipments.

Tariffs on steel and aluminum will have a heavy impact on employment in Texas, where the number of jobs in the energy industry — which relies on foreign steel and aluminum for rigs, pipelines and other equipment— are nearly double the number of aluminum and steel jobs nationwide..

The U.S. can expect to lose between one and 1.5 oil and gas jobs for every single steel or aluminum job saved by the tariffs, said Karr Ingham, an economist who studies the Texas oil industry. Texas has 225,000 jobs in oil and gas exploration, production and services, far more than the 140,000 jobs nationally in steel and aluminum that the tariffs are meant to bolster, Ingham said.

“There’s nothing about these tariffs that can be considered positive for the oil and gas industry,” Ingham said. “The imposition of these tariffs will result in net job loss, not just in oil and gas, but in other manufacturing sectors like construction and transportation that use steel.”

On Friday, President Donald Trump imposed steep tariffs on imports of foreign steel and aluminum designed to boost American companies. Trump’s order will impose tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum imports, but will exempt Canada and Mexico and leave negotiating room for U.S. allies to avoid or lower the tariffs.

Brand has served as the associate attorney general since May 2017, reporting to the deputy, Rod Rosenstein, and U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions. The New York Times first reported the news of Brand’s departure.

“The men and women of the Department of Justice impress me every day,” Brand said in a statement. “I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish over my time here. I want to thank Attorney General Sessions for his leadership over this Department. I’ve seen firsthand his commitment to the rule of law and to keeping the American people safe.”

Brand would become a top legal officer at Walmart, a move that follows the Jan. 31 retirement of Jeffrey Gearhart. In 2012, Gearhart was promoted to head of global governance. Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, had been searching internally and externally for Gearhart’s successor.
