Carusone argued that Media Matters' focus on traditional outlets is more important than ever, especially given the changing nature of the news business and the staffing cuts happening in many places.
"These outlets are not our enemy. We do not have a hostile posture toward them," he said. "But in some ways, because they're vulnerable, because the right-wing echo chamber is so well-funded and so loud, there's a role and a posture that we have to take that's very different from the one we had in the past. It doesn't mean that we don't listen to the regular players anymore, but it just means that structurally, we have to think about how we make sense of it."

“I just remember saying, ‘My God, how am I going to survive?’” he said. “I don’t care how tough you are, there’s always someone tougher in prison.”
He was arrested at 31 and spent more than a year in jail before being sentenced to life without parole under Washington state’s persistent-offender law — more commonly referred to as the three-strikes law. When he was growing up, getting arrested wasn’t something he feared — it was just part of life.
Bartley, who had previously committed a second-degree robbery and a second-degree assault, finally earned his third strike and life sentence in 1998 for his participation in a string of robberies. That guy — the one who demanded that people give him their money — needed to be behind bars. Bartley admits prison was probably the only thing that could have forced him out of his crack addiction and street-crime lifestyle.

Pay freezes are just the beginning. In February, hundreds of thousands of federal workers were forced into unpaid furloughs in accordance with sequestration’s across-the-board budget cuts. In virtually every federal agency, workers had to take as many as 15 unpaid days off during the last fiscal year. Then, when the government shutdown occurred, workers were again sent home without knowing if they would ever get paid for the missed time. The lack of cash flow stressed workers and made it difficult to pay bills on time. Fortunately, Congress did provide back pay for the 6.6 million work days missed during the shutdown. However, that comes out of agency budgets, and workers have to still complete their tasks without the ability to hire additional personnel to make up the time.
The Federal Workers Alliance, a coalition of unions representing federal employees, estimated in a message to the budget negotiators that between the pay freeze and furloughs, federal employees have sacrificed $114 billion in pay cuts over the past three years, an average of over $50,000 per employee. Yet somehow, budget negotiators are going to the well again.

Study shows intelligence gathering at fusion centers is out of line with accepted standard of reasonable suspicion
There is little if any independent oversight of or consistency in information-gathering procedures at some of the nation’s largest police departments, joint terrorism task forces and fusion centers, according to a new report published Tuesday by the Brennan Center for Justice.
The report, compiled from the findings from numerous Freedom of Information Act requests, reveals that there are large gaps in the local-federal intelligence-sharing systems that, the center says, pose a significant threat to national security and civil liberties.
“It’s organized chaos. That is the state of things at the moment,” said Michael Price, legal counsel at the Brennan Center and author of the report. “First is the lack of clear and consistent rules. Everyone has their own perception of what is suspicious, and what often happens is officers rely on their own biases and preconceptions.”

The consequences of a bad discharge can last a lifetime, disqualifying veterans from benefits and health care. Host Rachel Martin speaks with NPR's Quil Lawrence about his series on these former members of the military.
MARTIN: So, someone who went to war, has PTSD, even a drug problem, could potentially end up worse off than someone who never even thought of serving in the first place?
LAWRENCE: Yeah, and especially if the offense that got them kicked out of the service and it was related to trauma. Then they're stuck in this weird catch-22, they went to war, they got PTSD, it caused them to mess up, and now they can't get VA help for the PTSD that caused the problem to begin with. We interviewed Reed Holway, he's a young Iraq war vet. He has PTSD. He got in trouble when he got posted back home, just months before he would have finished his enlistment. And now he's got that bad paper for good.

The nation’s first truly transcontinental road, the Lincoln Highway once made its way through 14 states but has gradually slipped into obscurity.
One hundred years ago, a group of automobile enthusiasts established the nation’s first truly transcontinental road, the Lincoln Highway. The goal was to build a “Coast-to-Coast Rock Highway” from Times Square in New York City to Lincoln Park in San Francisco, and, in the words of its creator Carl Fisher, “stimulate as nothing else could the building of enduring highways everywhere that will … mean much to American agriculture and American commerce.” Named in honor of the nation’s 16th president, it was incorporated in 1913—50 years to the day from the beginning of the Battle of Gettysburg—and was America’s fi rst national memorial to President Lincoln. Cobbled together from existing roads and along rivers and rail lines, the Lincoln Highway made its way through 14 states (the image above is from East Rochester, Ohio). But gradually it slipped into obscurity, and today it is estimated that only about 80 percent of the original route is still drivable. In celebration of its 100th year, about 275 participants drove what’s left of the route in June, setting out from New York City and San Francisco, and meeting at the midpoint in Kearney, Neb.
