How Ann Coulter and the Far Right Are Using the Lefty Playbook to Troll Berkeley

Far-right provocateur Gavin McInnes, whose "Western chauvinist" Proud Boys were among those who waged bloody fights with antifa in Berkeley, described Alinsky to me as "an immoral human being"—but nevertheless professed to be a student of his writings. "This isn't us taking on a brilliant book because we admire the guy," he told me. "It's us seeing what your tactics are and using them against you."

Nowhere has that strategy more clearly been on display than in Berkeley, where supporters of Trump-boosting media provocateurs Milo Yiannopoulos and Ann Coulter have gleefully taken their cue from the Free Speech Movement of the 1960s. Although the University of California-Berkeley canceled each of their planned speeches over mounting security concerns—exacerbated by the mayhem around Yiannopoulos' scheduled appearance in March—officials worked to reschedule Coulter's speech. She declined. On Monday, conservative student groups filed suit against the university, arguing that canceling Coulter's talk violated their free-speech rights. Then Coulter vowed to show up anyway. Then she vowed not to come—on Wednesday the New York Times reported she was out. "Everyone who should believe in free speech fought against it or ran away," Coulter declared. (Alinsky's Rule 4: "Make the enemy live up to their own book of rules.&quot Then she told Fox News that she might still come: "I think I am still going to Berkeley, but there will be no speech."

Though most of Alinsky's devotees on the left eschew violence and laud, as he did, the passive resistance techniques of Mahatma Gandhi and the civil rights movement, his writings are not necessarily inconsistent with the alt-right's and antifa's embrace of street battles. "[T]he future does not argue for making a special religion of nonviolence," he wrote. "It will be remembered for what it was, the best tactic for its time and place."

Walmart Avoids Billions In U.S. Taxes And Is Working To Change The Law So It Can Dodge Billions More

2014 WASHINGTON – A new report released Thursday by Americans for Tax Fairness (ATF) reveals that Walmart uses tax breaks to dodge a whopping $1 billion annually, on average, in federal taxes. It also shows how Walmart is working behind the scenes to help lower the U.S. corporate tax rate to 25%, which would allow Walmart to cut its tax bill on average another $720 million a year.

The report, How Walmart is Dodging Billions in Taxes: And Scheming to Avoid Billions More, also reveals that the company currently holds $21.4 billion in profits offshore, where those earnings are exempt from federal taxes until they are brought back to the United States – which may never occur. Walmart’s offshore profits have doubled in recent years at the same time that its offshore investments flatlined, suggesting that the company is piling up cash overseas to avoid paying U.S. taxes on the earnings.


The study also reveals the ways in which Walmart is working to reduce corporate tax rates and eliminate all taxation of foreign profits, known as a territorial tax system. Walmart lobbies heavily on Capitol Hill to gain influence over the legislative process, employing 74 lobbyists and spending $32.6 million lobbying on taxes (the company’s top lobbying priority) and other issues over the past five years. Walmart also tries to buy access to lawmakers by contributing heavily to their campaigns – giving $6.1 million since 2009, disproportionately to members of the two Congressional tax-writing committees. In addition, Walmart is the only corporation among its competitors that is a member of three major industry organizations that are leading the public relations and lobbying campaigns to “reform” the tax system – the RATE (Reforming America’s Taxes Equitably) Coalition, the Alliance for Competitive Taxation and the Business Roundtable.

“When Walmart dodges billions in taxes the rest of us are forced to pick up the tab,” said Frank Clemente, executive director of Americans for Tax Fairness. “It means higher deficits, higher taxes on American families and small businesses, or slashed budgets for services we count on.”

Critics blast US shipment of fighter jets to Israel - Israel Unveils New Missile Defense System

Israel is the first country outside the US to get access to the F-35 warplane, the most expensive ever developed.

Israel received three F-35 stealth fighter jets from the United States at the weekend - a new generation of "near-invisible" planes that critics fear will free the country's hand to launch air strikes and spying operations against neighbouring states undetected.

In total, Israel has bought 50 F-35s from manufacturer Lockheed Martin, and claims it will have the first squadron combat-ready before the end of the year.

Israel is the first country outside the US to be allowed access to the warplane, said to be the most expensive ever developed.

The F-35's main selling point is its advanced stealth capabilities, reportedly allowing it to evade even the most sophisticated anti-aircraft missile systems. Lockheed describes the plane as "virtually invisible".

Israel Unveils Answer to Hamas and Hezbollah's Deadly Rockets: New Missile Defense System, David's Sling


Israel unveiled on Sunday its latest addition to its multilevel missile defense system with David's Sling, which is designed to intercept medium-range missiles.

The army announced on Sunday that the system is now fully operational. David's Sling, which was called in the past Magic Wand, is meant to fill a gap in Israel's rocket defense systems between Iron Dome, meant to intercept rockets from short range, and the Arrow system designed to shoot down complex, long-range ballistic threats.

The new system was welcomed into service with a ceremony at the Hatzor airbase in the presence of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman and Chief of Staff Gady Eisenkot.

Chomsky on the GOP: Has Any Organization Ever Been So Committed to Destruction of Life on Earth?

AMY GOODMAN: I wanted to ask you about this comment that you made that the Republican Party, you said, is the most dangerous organization in world history. Can you explain?

NOAM CHOMSKY: I also said that it’s an extremely outrageous statement. But the question is whether it’s true. I mean, has there ever been an organization in human history that is dedicated, with such commitment, to the destruction of organized human life on Earth? Not that I’m aware of. Is the Republican organization—I hesitate to call it a party—committed to that? Overwhelmingly. There isn’t even any question about it.

Take a look at the last primary campaign—plenty of publicity, very little comment on the most significant fact. Every single candidate either denied that what is happening is happening—namely, serious move towards environmental catastrophe—or there were a couple of moderates, so-called—Jeb Bush, who said, "Maybe it’s happening. We really don’t know. But it doesn’t matter, because fracking is working fine, so we can get more fossil fuels." Then there was the guy who was called the adult in the room, John Kasich, the one person who said, "Yes, it’s true. Global warming’s going on. But it doesn’t matter." He’s the governor of Ohio. "In Ohio, we’re going to go on using coal for energy, and we’re not going to apologize for it." So that’s 100 percent commitment to racing towards disaster.

Then take a look at what’s happened since. The—November 8th was the election. There was, as most of you know, I’m sure, a very important conference underway in Morocco, Marrakesh, Morocco. Almost roughly 200 countries at the United Nations-sponsored conference, which was—the goal of which was to put some specific commitments into the verbal agreements that were reached at Paris in December 2015, the preceding international conference on global warming. The Paris conference did intend to reach a verifiable treaty, but they couldn’t, because of the most dangerous organization in human history. The Republican Congress would not accept any commitments, so therefore the world was left with verbal promises, but no commitments. Well, last November 8th, they were going to try to carry that forward. On November 8th, in fact, there was a report by the World Meteorological Organization, a very dire analysis of the state of the environment and the likely prospects, also pointed out that we’re coming perilously close to the tipping point, where—which was the goal of the—the goal of the Paris negotiations was to keep things below that—coming very close to it, and other ominous predictions. At that point, the conference pretty much stopped, because the news came in about the election.

Well, new information in the form of a committed and capable enemy in Syria and Iraq, strife in Ukraine and the Ebola crisis is available.

Yet we continue to stick to a plan that was haphazardly devised in the 11th hour over budgetary infighting.

Political expedience coupled with a serious lack of leadership in the White House and Congress has led us to this precipice. Everything is reactionary, and nothing is planned, when leadership is unwilling or unable to make decisions absent political considerations.

Japanese demand for nuclear shelters, purifiers surges as North Korea tension mounts

Sales of nuclear shelters and radiation-blocking air purifiers have surged in Japan in recent weeks as North Korea has pressed ahead with missile tests in defiance of U.N. sanctions.

A small company that specializes in building nuclear shelters, generally under people's houses, has received eight orders in April alone compared with six orders during a typical year.

The company, Oribe Seiki Seisakusho, based in Kobe, western Japan, also has sold out of 50 Swiss-made air purifiers, which are said to keep out radiation and poisonous gas, and is trying to get more, said Nobuko Oribe, the company's director.

A purifier designed for six people sells for 620,000 yen ($5,630) and one designed for 13 people and usually installed in a family-use shelter costs 1.7 million yen ($15,440).

Tyranny of the majority (or tyranny of the masses) refers to an inherent weakness of direct democracy and majority rule in which the majority of an electorate can place its own interests above, and at the expense of, those in the minority. This results in oppression of minority groups comparable to that of a tyrant or despot.[1]

Potentially, through tyranny of the majority, a disliked or unfavored ethnic, religious, political, or racial group may be deliberately targeted for oppression by the majority element acting through the democratic process.[2]

American founding father Alexander Hamilton writing to Jefferson from the Constitutional Convention argued the same fears regarding the use of pure direct democracy by the majority to elect a demagogue who, rather than work for the benefit of all citizens, set out to either harm those in the minority or work only for those of the upper echelon. The Electoral College mechanism present in the indirect United States presidential election system, and the phenomenon of faithless electors allowed for within it, was, in part, deliberately created as a safety measure not only to prevent such a scenario, but also to prevent the use of democracy to overthrow democracy for an authoritarian, dictatorial or other system of oppressive government.[3] As articulated by Hamilton, one reason the Electoral College was created was so "that the office of President will never fall to the lot of any man who is not in an eminent degree endowed with the requisite qualifications".[4]
