Efficiency of water electrolysis doubled

Researchers have boosted the efficiency of water electrolysis. They applied a layer of copper atoms in a conventional platinum electrode. Thus, reaction intermediates could desorb a bit more easily from the catalyst surface. The modified system generated twice the amount of hydrogen than a platinum electrode without a copper layer. The team from the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Technical University in Munich and Universiteit Leiden published these results in the journal Nature Communications.

In the journal Nature Communications, researchers from the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Technical University of Munich and Universiteit Leiden report in what way the efficiency of electrodes can be increased for the purpose of water electrolysis. Typically, platinum is applied as catalyst, in order to accelerate the conversion of water to hydrogen and oxygen. For the reaction to be as efficient as possible, intermediates must not adhere too strongly or too weakly at the catalyst surface...snip

Traditional electrodes bind intermediates too strongly

The team headed by Prof Dr Aliaksandr Bandarenka from the Department of Physics of Energy Conversion and Storage in Munich and Prof Dr Wolfgang Schuhmann from the Center for Electrochemical Sciences in Bochum has calculated how strongly intermediates must adhere to the electrodes, in order to most efficiently facilitate the reaction. The analysis revealed that traditional electrodes from platinum, rhodium and palladium bind the intermediates a bit too strongly.

The researchers modified the properties of the platinum catalyst surface by applying a layer of copper atoms. With this additional layer, the system generated twice the amount of hydrogen than with a pure platinum electrode. But only if the researchers applied the copper layer directly under the top layer of the platinum atoms. The group observed another useful side effect: the copper layer extended the service life of the electrodes, for example by rendering them more corrosion-resistant...snip

BBC: Apple 'failing to protect Chinese factory workers'

Filming on an iPhone 6 production line showed Apple's promises to protect workers were routinely broken.

It found standards on workers' hours, ID cards, dormitories, work meetings and juvenile workers were being breached at the Pegatron factories.

Apple said it strongly disagreed with the programme's conclusions.

Exhausted workers were filmed falling asleep on their 12-hour shifts at the Pegatron factories on the outskirts of Shanghai.

One undercover reporter, working in a factory making parts for Apple computers, had to work 18 days in a row despite repeated requests for a day off.

27 giant profitable companies paid no taxes

Death and taxes are supposed to be two certainties of life. But a few companies have at least escaped the taxes part.

There are 27 companies in the Standard & Poor's 500, including telecom firm Level 3 Communications (LVLT), airline United Continental (UAL) and automaker General Motors (GM), that reported paying no income tax expense in 2015 despite reporting pre-tax profits, according to a USA TODAY analysis of data from S&P Global Market Intelligence.

Only profitable firms were included in the analysis since firms that lost money - like many energy companies - wouldn't be expected to pay taxes.

Escaping the taxman, so far, hasn't been an advantage at least in the eyes of investors. Shares of the companies that paid no taxes are down 11% on average over the past 12 months, which is more than twice the 4.8% decline by the S&P 500 during the same period...

WASHINGTON - U.S. President Barack Obama is fully committed to pushing for Congress to ratify the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) deal despite anti-trade sentiment gaining steam on the presidential election campaign trail, National Security Adviser Susan Rice said on Wednesday.



Voter anxiety and anger over international trade and the 12-nation Pacific trade pact have helped propel the campaign of Donald Trump, the Republican front-runner, as well as Senator Bernie Sanders, who is running against Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination.

"The president remains fully committed to working to achieve ratification on the U.S. side and encouraging all of our TPP partners to move through their domestic processes to do the same," Rice told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday.

For Obama, the TPP is a legacy issue, and standing firm on the pact reassures other nations with high expectations for the deal. At the same time, it highlights a division with Clinton, a close political ally, who has been grappling with Democratic anxiety about trade on the campaign trail...snip

Fukushima set to become hydrogen production center

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Saturday revealed a plan to make Fukushima Prefecture a center for the development of hydrogen energy technology in Japan.

According to his plan, dubbed “Fukushima new energy society initiative,” facilities will be developed in the prefecture by 2020 to produce enough hydrogen for annual consumption by 10,000 fuel-cell cars. Electricity to provide hydrogen would be generated by renewable energy sources such as wind power. Part of the hydrogen produced will be used for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, he said.



A public-private task force for the initiative, with the addition of the Fukushima prefectural government and electric power companies, will be established by the end of March to work on details of the plan.

Water will be electrolyzed to produce hydrogen by using 10,000 kilowatts of electricity collected from renewable energy sources such as wind power stations, according to the plan. Technology for efficient transportation of liquefied hydrogen will also be developed. The liquefied hydrogen will be used to run fuel-cell cars transporting athletes at the Tokyo Olympics and generate electricity at the Olympic village...

Web: This is Google's complicated web of holding companies that allows the web giant to reduce its international tax bill. Google US has set up two Irish companies, one of which revolves around a PO Box numbered 666 based in Bermuda, with a middle company in the Netherlands

Google has no office, no staff and little more than a plain PO Box numbered 666 on the sunny Caribbean Island of Bermuda.

But it still sends £8billion in profits a year to the island - which happens to have a 0 per cent corporation tax rate.

Google's communications chief Peter Barron today insisted the billions of pounds funnelled from the search engine's global network of subsidiaries had no impact on the firm's tax bill in Britain.

But after a week dominated by criticism of an agreement between Google - which once had the slogan 'Don't be Evil' - and HMRC to pay just £130million in back taxes for the past decade details of the company's arrangement on Bermuda are set to shock.
