Trump returning to Bedminster to spend the weekend

Source: NJ.com, by Jonathan D. Salant

Donald Trump will make his second visit to his golf club in Bedminster this weekend since becoming president, arriving Friday afternoon and staying through Sunday.

*****

Trump will return to Washington after hosting a fundraiser at his Bedminster golf club for Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-3rd Dist.), whose amendment allowing states to opt out of health insurance protections, including those for policyholders with pre-existing conditions, paved the way for House Republicans to pass legislation repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act.

The president embraced the House Republican bill, which the Congressional Budget Office said would leave 23 million fewer Americans without health insurance by 2026. MacArthur and other GOP lawmakers joined him at a Rose Garden celebration after it passed.

MacArthur this month set up a special joint fundraising committee in advance of  the Sunday afternoon event, Federal Election Commission filings show. That will allow him to take in individual contributions of as much as $257,700, rather than the maximum $5,400 for his re-election committee.

Bob Stoops suddenly retires as Oklahoma football coach after 18 seasons

Shocker. He was good!

"Stoops, the winningest head coach in Oklahoma history, has led the Sooners to a school-record 18 consecutive bowl berths, along with 10 Big 12 titles. He also holds the longest active streak of any FBS head coach while leading the program to eight or more victories each of the past 17 seasons."

Trump to host fundraiser for New Jersey ally in health care (at the "Summer White House")

President Donald Trump will be hosting a fundraiser at his New Jersey golf club for the Republican lawmaker who helped revive the GOP health care overhaul.

The invitation, obtained by The Associated Press on Sunday, says the Republican president and Rep. Tom MacArthur of southern New Jersey's 3rd District will host the June 11 event at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster.

The invitation suggests donations from $5,400 to $100,000.

MacArthur, who is up for re-election next year, played a central role in reviving the GOP health care legislation after an initial version collapsed under opposition from Republican moderates and conservatives.

'The Leftovers' is one of the best TV shows ever made

Source: Vox, by Todd VanDerWerff

*****

The Leftovers, then, is the first TV show I can think of that actively engages with a world where the uncertainty that is core to simply being alive has caused a lot of us to carve out our own completely separate experiences of reality. The series begins with the sudden disappearance of 2 percent of the world’s population, but its objective isn’t to answer the question of where those people went. Whatever the answer is, regardless of whether it’s simple or mind-bogglingly complex, will pale in comparison to the fact that when millions of people just up and vanished one day, everyone on Earth was reminded that much of existence is basically random, meaningless, and out of our control. What do you do when you’re confronted with that fact?

Well, you start trying to rationalize. You try to put a narrative on what happened. You find an explanation, whether scientific or religious or something else altogether, and you try to fill in the gap between your need for control and your complete and utter powerlessness. Everybody alive can relate to the feeling of wanting to be in charge of our lives, only to realize that the systems that surround us are waiting to idly flick a fingernail and send us ricocheting through the rapids of chance.

*****

And yet as the show progressed deeper into its run, it became, for me, maybe the most optimistic show on television, because it stared into uncertainty, into darkness, and insisted that we would figure out how to make our own light if we found ourselves stranded. The final two images of the series (and I promise these aren’t spoilers) are two characters holding hands and then doves returning to their roost — which if you know your Noah’s Ark is a sign that the end of the world is beginning to end.

*****

Struggling against the meaningless nature of life is important, but so is remembering that meaning is what we make of it and that we can create meaning for each other. 'The Leftovers' worked so well because it focused not on the flood, but on the Ark, on the people left aboard, watching the skies for a sign of something new. There’s all this water, all around us — but look at us, lucky us, we have a boat.

'Wonder Woman' Makes History at the Box Office

The comic book film opened over the weekend and is already a record breaker.

Source: WWD, by Leigh Nordstrom

“Wonder Woman” is officially the first female-led superhero blockbuster.

Opening over the weekend, “Wonder Woman” outperformed estimations of $80 million to $90 million and brought in $100.5 million in the U.S. and Canada. Such an accomplishment means the film, which is directed by Patty Jenkins, now holds the record for the biggest opening out of any movie directed by a woman. Internationally, the Warner Bros. and DC Comics film brought in $122.5 million this past weekend, for a total global opening of $223 million.

And talk about girl power: the record-setting opening figures are higher than male-helmed comic book movies “Thor,” both“ Guardians of the Galaxy” films, “Man of Steel,” and the “Iron Man” movies.

*****

Jenkins is previously best known for directing 2003’s “Monster,” starring Charlize Theron; “Wonder Woman” is only her second feature film. The record for biggest opening by a female director was previously held by “Fifty Shades of Grey” director Sam Taylor-Johnson.
