In case anyone hasn't seen Pew Reasearch poll

http://www.pewforum.org/2013/04/30/the-worlds-muslims-religion-politics-society-beliefs-about-sharia/

What's most interesting is in a "moderate" country like Egypt,

74 percent of Egyptians support making Sharia the law of the land
70 percent favor corporal punishment for crimes such as theft(subset of those who favor making sharia the law)
81 percent favor stoning for adultery
86 percent support the death penalty for converts from Islam

I'm speechless.

Germany Arrests 2 in Terrorism Investigation as Europe Braces for Potential Attacks

Source: NYT

As Europe braces against potential terrorist attacks after violence in France and Belgium, the German police on Friday arrested two Turkish men suspected of having links to an organization supporting the militant Islamic State and other radical groups fighting in Syria.

In Paris, where Secretary of State John Kerry met with Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius and then with President François Hollande, news reports said that 10 suspects had been questioned overnight about last week’s attacks.

The Belgian raids were said to have been aimed at people who had joined Islamic extremist groups in Syria or other battle zones, and then returned to Europe — a potential threat that has consumed intelligence and security services since well before the Paris attacks.

In Germany, prosecutors said that 250 officers had raided 11 apartments after months of tracking a group that was said to support the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, with money and the recruitment of combatants. Both of the arrested men were Turkish citizens, and they are formally suspected of planning a serious attack in Syria and of money laundering.

Merkel vows to protect Germany's Jews and Muslims from extremism

Source: Reuters---4 hours ago

Chancellor Angela Merkel promised on Thursday to protect Jews and Muslims living in Germany from prejudice, saying vibrant democracy was the best way to combat the sort of extremist violence that shook France last week.

Merkel, a staunch ally of Israel and defender of Germany's renascent Jewish community, has responded with unusual vigor to the growth of a grassroots, anti-Islam movement in Germany and the attacks by Islamic radicals in Paris that killed 17 people.

Saying that Islamist extremism and anti-Semitism "often go hand-in-hand", she told the Bundestag lower house of parliament that Christians, Jews and Muslims all had a place in Germany.

Echoing her comments on Monday that "Islam belongs to Germany", she said: "Jewish life belongs with us."

Ankara mayor : "Mossad enflames Islamophobia by causing such incidents"

The longtime mayor of Ankara accused Israel’s Mossad of masterminding last week’s terror attacks in France.

Melih Gokcek said Israeli intelligence planned the attacks in retaliation for France recently expressing support for Palestinian statehood, according to Today’s Zaman, an English-language Turkish publication, citing the Andalou news agency.

At a political event Sunday, Gokcek said it “is certain that Mossad is behind these kinds of incidents. Mossad enflames Islamophobia by causing such incidents.”

The head of Turkey’s capital city also claimed that following the Paris attacks, approximately 50 mosques and some Muslim individuals were targeted but there was no coverage from the international media.

France arrests 54 in hate speech crackdown

France arrests 54 in hate speech crackdown as new Charlie Hebdo issue sells out

France ordered prosecutors around the country to crack down on hate speech, anti-Semitism and glorifying terrorism and announced Wednesday it was sending an aircraft carrier to the Mideast to work more closely with the U.S.-led coalition fighting Islamic State militants.

Authorities said 54 people had been arrested for hate speech and defending terrorism in the last week. The crackdown came as Charlie Hebdo's defiant new issue sold out before dawn around Paris, with scuffles at kiosks over dwindling copies of the satirical weekly that fronted the Prophet Muhammad anew on its cover.

After terror attacks killed 20 people in Paris last week, including three gunmen, President Francois Hollande said the situation "justifies the presence of our aircraft carrier." One of the gunmen claimed allegiance to the Islamic State group.

France is already carrying out airstrikes against the extremist group in Iraq. Hollande spoke aboard the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier to members of France's military.

Radical cleric Choudary calls Charlie Hebdo cover ‘act of war’

Radical Islamist cleric Anjem Choudary has declared the decision to print a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad on the cover of Charlie Hebdo’s first issue since Wednesday’s massacre an “act of war.”

The controversial cleric made the statements days after claiming Muslims did “not believe in freedom of speech” following last week’s terror attack in Paris, in which 17 people were killed by Islamist gunmen.

Among those killed were journalists and cartoonists working for the controversial magazine, which printed images of the Prophet Muhammad.

According to the Islamists, depicting images of the Prophet was an act that warranted capital punishment under Sharia (Islamic) law.

Choudary: "Pope should sentence to death for insulting Islam or embrace Islam"

He went on to say that Pope Benedict deserved to die for comments he believed are an insult to Islam. But, he added, "that needs to be assessed by a judge in the Sharia, or Islamic state (IS, ISIS)." If the Pope were to embrace Islam, he added, all would be forgiven. In 2006, Benedict made a statement that angered many Muslims and prompted an apology from the Vatican.

“The emperor, after having expressed himself so forcefully, goes on to explain in detail the reasons why spreading the faith through violence is something unreasonable. Violence is incompatible with the nature of God and the nature of the soul,” he said.

“God…is not pleased by blood - and not acting reasonably is contrary to God’s nature. Faith is born of the soul, not the body. Whoever would lead someone to faith needs the ability to speak well and to reason properly, without violence and threats... To convince a reasonable soul, one does not need a strong arm, or weapons of any kind, or any other means of threatening a person with death,” he added, quoting the long-dead Christian Emperor Paleologus. At the time, CNN reported that "thousands of Palestinians marched in Gaza, demanding an apology."

Choudary continued, telling Trento that "Islam is the future," inviting him to become a Muslim. "You save yourself and your children from hellfire," he added.

Kosher market attack deepens fears among European Jews

The killing of four French Jews in last week's hostage standoff at a Paris kosher market has deepened the fears among European Jewish communities shaken by rising anti-Semitism and feeling vulnerable due to poor security and a large number of potential soft targets.

In the wake of the attacks, which follow deadly strikes on a Belgian Jewish Museum and a Jewish school in southwestern France, Israeli leaders have called on European Jews to immigrate to the Jewish state. But European Jews are deeply ambivalent about leaving, and their community leaders, along with top politicians, have urged people to stay in their homelands.

"The European Jewry is the oldest European minority and we have our experience of surviving under all possible circumstances," Moshe Kantor, president of the European Jewish Congress, told The Associated Press. "We will not give up our motherland, which is called Europe. We will not stop the history of European Jewry, that is for sure."

Kantor called for increased security at Jewish sites, concerted action against anti-Semitism across the continent and better coordination of intelligence forces against religious extremism. But he acknowledged that if any Jewish European does not feel safe, "I say you should leave in this case."
