Will history repeats itself? "How an Outsider President Killed a Party"

Happy Presidents Day everyone!

It was summer, and a major U.S. political party had just chosen an inexperienced, unqualified, loutish, wealthy outsider with ambiguous party loyalties to be its presidential nominee. Some party luminaries thought he would help them win the general election. But many of the faithful were furious and mystified: How could their party compromise its ideals to such a degree?

Sound like 2016? This happened a century and a half ago.

Many have called Donald Trump’s unexpected takeover of a major political party unprecedented; but it’s not. A similar scenario unfolded in 1848, when General Zachary Taylor, a roughhewn career soldier who had never even voted in a presidential election, conquered the Whig Party...

...A look back at what happened that year is eye-opening—and offers warnings for those on both sides of the aisle. Democrats quick to dismiss Trump should beware: Taylor parlayed his outsider appeal to defeat Lewis Cass, an experienced former Cabinet secretary and senator. But Republicans should beware, too: Taylor is often ranked as one of the worst presidents in U.S. history—and, more seriously, the Whig Party never recovered from his victory. In fact, just a few years after Taylor was elected under the Whig banner, the party dissolved—undermined by the divisions that caused Taylor’s nomination in the first place, and also by the loss of faith that followed it.

I try hard to avoid wishful thinking, that the GQP will have the same fate as the Whigs. But still, ...

TLP: "America -- once again -- stands for freedom"

In stark contrast to the previous administration.
And to be precise, we're talking "freedom." Not "free-dumb."

I had a classmate in grade school whose family was from the Ukraine. Back then, it was part of the soviet union, and I know that he and his kinfolk cheered loudly when that collapsed. So glad to hear that
"Ukranians will fight -- and fight hard -- against Russian agression..." Watch the clip for the rest of that statement.

How "Sad"! Lincoln Project's latest

The ad is being shown in Palm Beach County FL -- so the world's Sorest Loser can't miss seeing it -- and in Tallahassee -- where MoRon can see it. Clever ad placement!

The 60-second spot trolls Trump, with a female narrator saying, “People are trying to forget about you … people you made … people like Ron DeSantis.”

“Without you, he’d be nothing,” the narrator says. “A loser.”

“Everyone says he’s bigger than you. Smarter than you. Thinner than you,” the narration continues, noting that DeSantis is now “on Fox all the time.”

GOP Senator Bob Dole Dies at 98

Source: Washington Post

Former U.S. senator Robert J. Dole, who overcame the hardships of dust bowl Kansas during the Depression and devastating injuries in World War II to run three times for the presidency and serve more than a decade as the Senate Republican leader, died Dec. 5 at 98.

The Elizabeth Dole Foundation announced the death but did not provide an immediate cause. He announced in February that he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer.

Mr. Dole was often critical of the Republican Party after leaving office, telling audiences that it had become too conservative, with far-right positions that recalled those of his former rival Patrick J. Buchanan. But he remained loyal to the party and, in 2016, became the only former GOP presidential candidate to endorse Donald Trump, whose campaign advisers included former Dole lieutenants such as Paul Manafort.

Despite the harsh turn his party took under Trump, he said in an interview in July with USA Today that he regretted the former president’s loss in November but broke with him over claims of election fraud and was “sort of Trumped out.”

Anyone else getting "trolled" on YouTube?

Whenever I pull up a progressive video on GoogleTube this weekend, I get a pre-viewing ad from AmeriKKKan FreeDUMB Tour about their upcoming event in my city (Jacksonville FL) next month.

Is this happening to anyone else?

Hard to tell if this is a trolling exercise -- trying to get progressives to protest this October 8-9 event, featuring (DJT Junior) and a whole sordid list of other speakers -- as opposed to a more likely case of really inept targeting of online advertising.

Tempted as I am to show up at the Prime Osborn Center in my "Only You..." t-shirt, I have much better things to do with my time. (It's been almost a year since I've worn it. 'Bout time, doncha think?)

Borowitz strikes again!

TALLAHASSEE (The Borowitz Report)—In what many have seen as a legal setback for Governor Ron DeSantis, a Florida judge has ruled that the state’s residents have a right to a smarter governor.

“The Constitution does not grant you the right to yell ‘fire’ in a crowded theatre,” Judge John Cooper, of Florida’s Second Circuit, wrote. “Similarly, it does not grant you the right to govern a state like a blithering idiot.”

“The Declaration of Independence enshrines the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” Cooper continued. “All three are imperiled in a state run by a blazing bonehead.”

DeSantis swiftly blasted the ruling, stating that it would have a “chilling effect” on ignorant politicians becoming the governor of Florida going forward.

DeSantis’s statement drew strong support from two of his state’s most prominent political luminaries, the former governors Rick Scott and Jeb Bush.
