Indiegogo removes fundraisers that supported S.C. police officer

Source: Chicago Tribune

Online crowdfunding platform Indiegogo on Friday afternoon removed all fund-raising campaigns in support of South Carolina police officer Michael Slager.

The move came about a day after crowdfunding site GoFundMe took the same action.

Slager, who is white, was charged Tuesday with murder after video surfaced of him fatally shooting an unarmed black man, Walter Scott, in the back during a traffic stop.

Supporters of Slager promptly attempted fundraising campaigns for him on GoFundMe and Indiegogo. GoFundMe rejected one such campaign, telling Blue Sky on Thursday that the campaign violated its terms and conditions

About time.

Slager has no defense funds being crowdfunded.

Last amount the campaign was able to raise is 1,500.

That'll get him an attorney for 4 hours. Hopefully long enough to plead guilty.

Mods: I know it's from yesterday, but it is within the 12 hour mark.

Indiana pizzeria that backed 'religious freedom' law reopens

Source: Indystar

WALKERTON, Ind. — A northern Indiana pizzeria that closed after its owner supported Indiana's religious objections law has reopened.

Memories Pizza owner Kevin O'Connor says he reopened about 4 p.m. Thursday. He says that within an hour, all eight tables were filled and six people were waiting for carryout orders. There were no protests as of 7 p.m.

O'Connor faced criticism after he and his daughter, Crystal, said they would never deny service to a gay customer but would decline to cater a same-sex wedding because it would conflict with their Christian beliefs. Protests led them to close the Walkerton pizzeria about 20 miles southwest of South Bend.

O'Connor says he'll use some of his share of more than $842,000 raised online to make improvements. He also plans to donate to charity.

Oh why didn't they remain closed and scram to Cayman Islands with their 850K?

*mutter*

Well, sales will be way way way way down unless it gets supported by bigots.

The International Criminal Court will never investigate Palestine's problems

http://qz.com/376448/the-international-criminal-court-will-never-investigate-palestines-problems/

I want to start with a prediction, one I’ve made before and still subscribe to: the International Criminal Court will never open a formal investigation into the situation in Palestine.

People of all political persuasions seem to think that the International Criminal Court (ICC) is somehow eager to leap into the most politicized conflict of the modern era. I disagree, not because the situation doesn’t deserve to be investigated—I think it is one of the gravest situations in the world—but because I don’t think we take the ICC’s institutional interests into account nearly enough when we prognosticate about what it might do. And I see very little upside for the ICC in opening a formal investigation.

Why it won’t…

My first concern is that the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) simply does not have the resources necessary to investigate additional situations—particularly one as complex as Palestine.

To say that the OTP is overstretched is a considerable understatement. So you have to ask: why would it spend its limited resources on the Palestine situation, as opposed to all the other non-African situations it has been monitoring for years? Public pronouncements notwithstanding, the OTP has shown very little desire to wade into situations where major superpowers are watching their behavior.

Defense Ministry thwarts attempt to smuggle electronics to Gaza terrorists

Defense Ministry security guards found a number of infrared cameras, communication devices, and remote control security cameras.

Security guards from the Defense Ministry intercepted an attempt to smuggle advanced electronics to terrorists in the Gaza Strip by way of the Kerem Shalom border crossing, the Defense Ministry announced on Monday.

The interception, made jointly by the Defense Ministry, Shin Bet, and the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, discovered a number of infrared cameras, communication devices, and remote control security cameras.

"The items were hidden in an Israeli truck that was carrying communications equipment to the Gaza Strip," the Defense Ministry said. "Security elements are continuing the investigation."

The interception is the second of its kind in the past week, the Ministry added. Since January this year, the Administration of Border Crossings, which is run by the Defense Ministry, intercepted over 100 smuggling attempts of banned goods into Gaza that were intended for terror organizations.

Shurat Hadin Files War Crime Suit Against Hamas in US Court

One day before the Palestinian Authority officially becomes a member of the International Crime Court, Shurat Hadin has requested that the US Attorney General and the justice ministry prosecute Hamas leaders for “war crimes”. The NGO is representing 26 US citizens, some of whom also hold Israeli passports. They asked that Hamas leaders be prosecuted for firing rockets at Israel’s Ben Gurion airport near Tel Aviv on July 22 during the 2014 Gaza war. It is tinged with intentional irony as the PA intends to use their status in the ICC to prosecute Israeli officials for war crimes. Israel is not a member of the ICC and cannot file complaints there against Palestinians.

The charges claim that some of the litigants were forced to run for shelter when rockets launched at the airport hit a short distance away. Others were passengers on board a Delta flight from New York that was forced to land in Paris, after US flights were diverted from Israel as a result of the rocket fire.

Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, the director of Shurat Hadin, said that according to US law, a person can be imprisoned for performing an “act of violence” at an international airport, if the victim is a US citizen. The law (18 U.S.C. § 37(a)) provides prison sentences of up to 20 years for any person who unlawfully and intentionally uses violence against Americans at an international airport. She alleged that “the Palestinians committed war crimes,” and stressed that courts other than the ICC had “the authority to try them, including in the United States”. The case is being organized for Shurat Hadin by attorney Robert Tolchin of New York.
