CNN giveth, and CNN taketh away. After Bernie Sanders whiffed at last Thursdays debate when he was asked to provide a single example of money influencing Hillary Clintons decisions, CNN reporter Jeff Zeleny helpfully provided Sanders with an attack line that he gingerly tried to roll out in subsequent interviews. On Thursday mornings edition of New Day, however, anchor Chris Cuomo casually knocked the teeth out of that argument as he was interviewing Sanders campaign manager Jeff Weaver, as evidenced by the fact that Weaver immediately abandoned it.
At issue was former Secretary of State and then-New York Senator Clintons support for a 2005 bankruptcy bill, the lone example that has ever been offered to support Sanders claim that big donations and/or speaking fees have influenced her:
In fact, the first time Bernie Sanders tried to roll out the bankruptcy bill attack, while trying to lay it off on Elizabeth Warren, Hillary Clinton responded with an explanation that sounded a lot like Sanders own defense of his vote for the 1994 crime bill, that she leveraged her support in order to add provisions that protected women and children:
The bill she supported didnt pass, but when it came up for a vote in 2005, Hillary missed the vote, and put out a statement in opposition to the bill.
As for trade, the media and the Sanders campaign have a habit of conflating Hillarys own voting record and stated political positions with statements of support that she has made while First Lady or Secretary of State, roles in which such statements are more a reflection of the role than anything else. Of course she spoke encouragingly about the Trans Pacific Partnership while she was helping to negotiate it, but when the final deal was made public, years after that, she opposed it. Bernie Sanders loves to talk about his D-minus rating from the NRA, but the libertarian CATO Institute gives Bernie and Hillary the exact same grade on trade based on their respective congressional voting records.
Weaver says he and the Sanders campaign intend to continue the same level of attacks on Hillary Clinton, but if the media will do their jobs the way Chris Cuomo did, theyre more than welcome to try.

At issue was former Secretary of State and then-New York Senator Clintons support for a 2005 bankruptcy bill, the lone example that has ever been offered to support Sanders claim that big donations and/or speaking fees have influenced her:
Cuomo: The senator has chances, not just here on New Day but also during the debate, to say, well, what can you point to that gives you this cause for concern with Hillary Clinton when it comes to any money sources? And Ive got to tell you, the responses have not been great from him. You cant point to anything other than the bankruptcy bill, and that was a long time ago, and there were a lot of reasons why that went through, with a lot of Democrats. Wheres the there there?
Weaver: Theres a lot of there there. The secretary supported almost every bad trade deal thats come down the pike. Senator Sanders has opposed almost every one. And the impact of money on politics is not like, I give you ten dollars and then you give me a vote. That would be illegal and no ones alleging that anybody did anything illegal, but what happens is it colors your view of things, you give access to people to present their case that regular people dont have in the process, things move your way in terms of regulations, this is the way the process works.

Heres a pretty scary story courtesy of Today that brings up proposed legislation in Idaho that would require parents to bring their sick children to medical professionals instead of relying on prayer and faith to heal them. Specifically, it focuses on 20-year-old Mariah Walton, who is now waiting on a heart and lung transplant because her parents prayed for her instead of getting her to a doctor when she was a child.
Had they sought professional help for their daughter, she claims, her congenital heart defect could have been treated. Now, she is out of breath and in pain and uses a breathing machine, which is why she wants to see her parents prosecuted.

New York (CNN)Former New York City police Officer Peter Liang will not serve jail time in the 2014 shooting death of Akai Gurley in a New York housing project.
Liang was sentenced to 800 hours of community service and five years' probation Tuesday after Judge Danny Chun reduced his manslaughter conviction to criminally negligent homicide in the shooting death of Gurley, 28, who was not armed.
Liang, 28, was found guilty of manslaughter and official misconduct in February for shooting Gurley in the stairwell of a Brooklyn housing project.
Liang was immediately fired after his conviction.
Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson had written the sentencing judge with a recommendation of five years of probation, including six months of home confinement with electronic monitoring and 500 hours of community service. Liang faced up to 15 years in prison.
"Mr. Liang has no prior criminal history and poses no future threat to public safety," Thompson said in a statement last month. "Because his incarceration is not necessary to protect the public, and due to the unique circumstances of this case, a prison sentence is not warranted."
Liang, with 18 months on the job, was on patrol in the dark stairwell of a Brooklyn housing project in November 2014 when he fired his gun. The bullet ricocheted off a wall and struck Gurley in the chest. Gurley died at a hospital.
Defense lawyers called the shooting a tragedy, not a crime. Prosecutors argued that Liang was reckless and was more concerned about his story than helping Gurley.
"There is no evidence ... that he intended to kill or injure Akai Gurley," Thompson said in the statement. "When Mr. Liang went into that building that night, he did so as part of his job and to keep the people of Brooklyn and our city safe."
Liang had a brief meeting last month with Gurley's domestic partner, Kim Ballinger, at Thompson's Brooklyn offices, according to attorneys for Liang and Ballinger, who were present.

CNN political commentator Sally Kohn endorsed Bernie Sanders this past weekend, but its the reaction she got for one moment in particular thats putting her at odds with some of his fans.
Anyone with an internet connection knows that a lot of Sanders fans really dont like Clinton because of her Wall Street connections, problematic ties to a number of industries, her foreign policy record, and pretty much everything else strong progressives dont like.
As she spoke yesterday at a Sanders rally, Kohn took a moment to make it clear she doesnt hate Clinton, but her praise of the other Democratic candidate in the race (coupled with her saying Clinton would make an extraordinary president) received boos.
So she wrote a piece for The Daily Beast today clarifying that yes, she prefers Sanders, but has a problem with shockingly vitriolic supporters of his who dont care for Clinton as a reasonable alternative:
Shes also a little troubled by the fact that the Clinton campaign has been far more unconditionally welcoming of the votes of Sanders supporters than vice versa.

Listen, I can sit around and critique Clintons positions on key issues as much as the next leftist. But Im also honest enough to acknowledge where our visions overlap and praise her when appropriate.
I happen to think that Senator Sanders is 100 percent realistic about his goals for our nation, but his supporters are completely delusional if they think Secretary Clinton is evil. We can think Bernie Sanders is the better candidate without thinking Hillary Clinton is bad.

"You bet your ass I'm qualified." (Not a real quote.)
Connecticuts Hartford Courant endorses Clinton based on her realistic approach to issues and qualifications:
Hillary Clinton Most Qualified and Effective
...We believe she can do the one thing that President Obama has not done and that Mr. Sanders may not do, with his ambivalent record on guns (including voting against the Brady bill) use her political skills to get greater gun controls. Dec. 14, 2012, has tragically made that Connecticut's salient issue...
Mr. Sanders is appealing in his promises: Who doesn't want tuition-free universities, single-payer health care and bigger Social Security checks? But the costs are far greater than he's acknowledging. Also, the tax increases required would make Congress keel over. Finally, the quality of his Medicare-for-all system wouldn't match today's. He is idealistic. But he is also unrealistic .
Mrs. Clinton has turned dreams into laws. She has fought for the underclass, championing the causes of women and children around the world. Her grasp of foreign policy is deep including, through sorry experience, the limits of U.S. power.
Given her resume, few people today are more qualified for the Oval Office than she is.
The Philadelphia Inquirer also endorsed Clinton, citing her experience and realism. However, the endorsement was hardly ringing; it emphasized the editorial boards dissatisfaction with Sanders idealism more than great appreciation for Clinton:
In a Word, Clinton
[P]articularly in contrast with the former secretary of state, [Sanders] has largely downplayed foreign affairs, one of the president's greatest responsibilities. He expresses too much vain hope that other countries will do what they ought to, while Clinton told the Inquirer Editorial Board that "we have to continue to lead the world." She helped do so herself by contributing to the nuclear deal with Iran, a bright spot in President Obama's foreign policy.
Even on his core issues, Sanders can be surprisingly short on the prose behind the poetry. His $75 billion-a-year plan to make public universities tuition-free hasn't attracted a single Senate cosponsor from either party. Asked about the complication that free college doesn't correlate with higher education levels globally, he reiterated the desirability of postsecondary schooling and added, "To me, this is not a complicated issue." Clinton's plan for income-based loan repayment would spend much less public money on students who don't need it: again, less electrifying but more realistic.
[S]elf-inflicted controversies dampen the enthusiasm that should attach to a candidate who is not only thoroughly qualified for the presidency but also historically unprecedented by the long line of men who have occupied it. To paraphrase a Republican, Sanders may have "the best words" in this contest, but HILLARY CLINTON is better prepared to lead her country.

Foreign policy and specifics continued to plague independent Vermont Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders during his interview on Sunday mornings State of the Union. Host Dana Bash asked Sanders to comment on a controversial bill that would allow Saudi Arabia to face liability for the 9/11 attacks in American courts, which has in turn elicited threats of a massive sell-off of American assets by the Saudi government. The bill is currently in the Senate, where Sanders works, but like so many of the questions he was asked in that recent NY Daily News editorial board meeting, Sanders didnt have enough information to respond:
Elsewhere in the interview, Sanders was given another crack at attacking Hillary Clinton over campaign contributions when Bash asked him to name a decision Hillary had made that was influenced by money, and Sanders fed Bash the exact line that CNN reporter Jeff Zeleny gave him Thursday night, although Sanders coyly refused to chalk it up definitively to campaign cash.
Sanders was also asked about his position on liability for gun manufacturers, and explained that his new position is not really his new position, its just that he contradicted himself when he was asked about it before?
This is the immunity shield law that Bernie voted for, and here is the repeal bill that he signed on to as a co-sponsor on January 28, after Hillary Clinton made this a campaign issue.

One of the standout moments at Thursday nights Democratic presidential debate was when independent Vermont Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was unable to name a single decision that Hillary Clinton has made that was influenced by campaign contributions. The exchange cut against the Sanders campaigns central argument against Hillary, that she cant be trusted to take on corporate interests because she takes large campaign contributions.
In a most unusual move, right after Thursday nights debate, CNN reporter Jeff Zeleny literally fed Bernie Sanders an attack line to use against Hillary in case the subject ever comes up again:

Last night, while talking about Hillary Clinton and the place of money in politics at a Bernie Sanders rally, Dr. Paul Song used the phrase democratic whores. While he was talking about the exchange of money for favors in a broad sense, using such a term when discussing a female politician in particular is, of course, a terrible idea.
The Sanders camp disavowed the comments, but since they happened in front of a crowd of 27,000 during the social media age, the damage had been done.

Even though the incident barely made a blip on the cable news radar, online activists noticed fast. Right now, #DemocraticWhores is trending on Twitter with 74,400 tweets nation-wide.
