Tactical Peek's JournalAmericans' Civics Knowledge Drops on First Amendment and Branches of Government
Highlights
Less than half of U.S. adults (47%) could name all three branches of government, down from 56% in 2021 and the first decline on this question since 2016.
The number of respondents who could, unprompted, name each of the five freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment also declined, sharply in some cases. For example, less than 1 in 4 people (24%) could name freedom of religion, down from 56% in 2021.
Over half of Americans (51%) continue to assert incorrectly that Facebook is required to let all Americans express themselves freely on its platform under the First Amendment.

Nashville civil rights veteran Diane Nash, who led sit-ins, coordinated freedom rides and was jailed while pregnant for teaching minors nonviolent protest tactics, will be honored with a Presidential Medal of Freedom.
. . . Nash, born in Chicago, moved to Nashville when she transferred to Fisk University in 1959. Incensed by the overt racism she was not accustomed to in Illinois, Nash joined Rev. James Lawson's nonviolence workshops where they role-played as demonstrators and attackers to ready themselves for all possibilities.
Nash was elected chairperson of the Nashville movement and she and the Student Central Committee staged sit-ins at lunch counters across the city.
In 1960, when the home of attorney and civil rights activist Z. Alexander Looby was bombed, Nash wanted to march albeit silent and prayerful. She walked thousands of students down Jefferson Street to the courthouse steps. There, she was met by Mayor Ben West. ...

Mississippi lawmaker with ethics woes forced into GOP runoff
By MICHAEL R. BLOOD
LOS ANGELES (AP) Republican U.S. Rep. Steven Palazzo of Mississippi was forced into a runoff Tuesday after a congressional ethics watchdog raised questions about his campaign spending and he faced his largest-ever field of primary challengers.
. . . The congressman first elected in 2010 failed to win the GOP nomination outright on Tuesday, earning less than 50% of the vote.
His opponent will either be Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell, who is also campaigning on border security, or Clay Wagner, a retired banker who says he wants to limit taxation and regulation.
A 2021 report by the Office of Congressional Ethics found substantial reason to believe Palazzo, a military veteran who serves on the Appropriations and Homeland Security committees, abused his office by misspending campaign funds, doing favors for his brother and enlisting staff for political and personal errands. His then-spokesperson, Colleen Kennedy, said the probe was based on politically motivated false allegations.

Purple Haze
Joy Oladokun
Rather have us than have nothing at all
Not trying to sound emotional
But I've seen waters rise and strong men fall
It's just good to have a hand to hold
Every day, there's a sad a twist of fate
And it's easy to think there's no way we can make it
But I swear you and I can stay strong through the fight
If we hold on long enough to face it
Sure there's purple haze in the sky
And they say maybe we're running out of time
But I don't care, 'cause you and I
Know that love is all we need to survive
Came up from nothing, oh, nothing at all
And you stood by my side (you stood by my side)
Oh, you can count on me if ever you fall
Until the end of time (until the end of time)
Every day, there's a sad a twist of fate
And it's easy to think there's no way we can make it
(There's no way we can make it)
But I swear, you and I (you and I)
Can stay strong through the fight (through the fight)
If we hold on long enough to face it
Sure there's
Purple haze in the sky
And they say maybe we're running out of time
But I don't care, 'cause you and I
Know that love is all we need to survive
If the world (if the world) is on fire (is on fire)
I don't care, 'cause you're down for the ride (for the ride)
We'll survive, we'll get by (we'll get by)
From now on 'til the end of time
'Til the end of time
Oh, oh
Oh, until the end of time
Yeah
Purple haze in the sky
And they say maybe we're running out of time
But I don't care, 'cause you and I
Know that love is all we need to survive
Love is all we need to survive
