onetexan's JournalYard sign 'Liberty lives here'
So yesterday the hubby & i walked our pup around some streets in our subdivision & saw 2 houses that had a white sign with black letters that said 'Liberty lives here'. I've seen those dark American flag signs at another house, and other RW signs as well. I can't tell if the liberty sign is another one of those masked RW signs as well. Anyone know?

Trump's Second Term Would Look Like This
Source: The Atlantic
Ever since the U.S. Senate failed to convict Donald Trump for his role in the January 6 insurrection and disqualify him from running for president again, a lot of people, myself included, have been warning that a second Trump term could bring about the extinction of American democracy. Essential features of the system, including the rule of law, honest vote tallies, and orderly succession, would be at risk.
Today, however, we can do more than just speculate about how a second Trump term would unfold, because the MAGA movement has been telegraphing its plans in some detail. In a host of waysincluding the overt embrace of illiberal foreign leaders; the ruthless behavior of Republican elected officials since the 2020 election; Trump allies elaborate scheming, as uncovered by the Houses January 6 committee, to prevent the peaceful transition of power; and Trumps own actions in the waning weeks of his presidency and now as ex-presidentthe former president and his allies have laid out their model and their methods.
Begin with the model. Viktor Orbán has been the prime minister of Hungary twice. His current tenure began in 2010. He is not a heavy-handed tyrant; he has not led a military coup or appointed himself maximum leader. Instead, he follows the path of what he has called illiberal democracy. Combining populist rhetoric with machine politics, he and his party, Fidesz, have rotted Hungarian democracy from within by politicizing media regulation, buying or bankrupting independent media outlets, appointing judges who toe the party line, creating obstacles for opposition parties, and more. Hungary has not gone from democracy to dictatorship, but it has gone from democracy to democracy-ish. Freedom House rates it only partly free. The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistances ratings show.

Long article but well worth reading. The GOP are hellbent on orbanizing the country w a full takeover should the GOP win the levers of power again.
NYT Editorial Says Prosecuting Trump 'First Step' to End Democracy 'Crisis'
The New York Times said Donald Trump must face prosecution over his "unprecedented assault" on American democracy to show that no one is "above the law."
In an editorial published on Friday, the Times suggested that it is vital that the former president be criminally investigated over his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results, including a plot to install fake electoral officials in a number of key states, before he "roused an armed mob" to storm the Capitol on January 6.
The paper's editorial board said that while "no one should revel" in the prospect of a former president facing criminal prosecution, Trump's actions have "brought shame on one of the world's oldest democracies and destabilized its future."

LA Times: The Mar-a-Lago search could signal the end of another 'long national nightmare'
https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2022-08-08/donald-trump-mar-a-lago-fbi-warrant-searchWhy now? What explains the thunderous revelation that the FBI doubtless with the approval of those at the highest levels of the Department of Justice executed a search warrant on Monday at Donald Trumps Mar-a-Lago residence? The apparent focus was documents the former president removed from the White House. A very plausible answer is that a charge related to official documents could swiftly and cleanly serve as the basis for a satisfactory resolution of the pox on the country that is Donald Trump.
A more straightforward, prosaic answer to why the warrant was served is that the Department of Justice has assembled evidence of probable cause that evidence of a crime would be found at Trump's Florida home...
If Trump were convicted of this charge, the plain meaning of the law would permanently take him out of commission as a candidate for president, and all talk of his 2024 candidacy would be dead in the water. Likewise, all the support and polarization that the mere possibility of another Trump presidency raises...
Trump would be duly punished. Were he exiled from office, it would remove at a stroke the most dangerous and polarizing aspect of his continued defiance of the rule of law. To adapt the words of President Ford when he pardoned Nixon, Mondays Mar-a-Lago search could well be the beginning of a fitting and broadly if not universally accepted end to our latest long national nightmare.

Need recommendation on a slow cooker
Earlier this afternoon i packed my 7-quart Gourmia crockpot with ingredients to make pho soup. Plugged it in & it crapped out on me.
I 've had this one for almost 4 years, and purchased a manual one on purpose since my previous expensive digital slow cooker only lasted 2 years. I have a 4qt manual original Crock pot brand that is over 20 years old still works but i need a large one for soups, etc. Would love your recommendation on a good one &whether i should go manual or digital. Thanks!

Austonia: Men are stepping up, saying Roe v. Wade ruling was 'the final push' to get a vasectomy
https://austonia.com/austin-vasectomy-roevwadeAccording to vasectomy specialist Dr. Luke Machen of Austin Fertility and Reproductive Medicine, the clinic received over 150 vasectomy appointment requests combined on Friday and Monday following the ruling. Typically, the clinic performs 45-50 vasectomies per month.
The Austin Urology Institute reported that they received about 70 calls in the first hour after the ruling was released. OBYN at Womens Health Domain reported receiving over 100 requests from women interested in getting their tubes tied.
I would say a significant number of patients who scheduled recently have mentioned the Supreme Court case, Machen said. A lot of guys have said they were thinking about having a vasectomy over the last year or so, and the ruling was the final push to get it done.
The average patient at Austin Fertility who receives a vasectomy is about 37, though Machen said he has started to see an increased number of patients with zero children choosing to get a vasectomy. While they put together a study, Machen expects demand for the procedure to plateau but stay higher than before the ruling.
Machen said vasectomy is the most effective form of permanent birth control, requires only about a week of recovery time, is reversible with success rates of up to 95% and has no effects on sexual function or testosterone.
Nicholson said the procedure was less than $700, he was never in any pain, had very little recovery time and has never regretted the decisionin fact, he has happily recommended the procedure to friends."
