Employees at the Mayfield Consumer Products candle factory, where eight people were killed in a tornado, filed a class-action lawsuit against their employer.

Several survivors of the Mayfield candle factory tornado collapse have filed the first lawsuit against the company since the deadly storm, alleging that Mayfield Consumer Products showed a "flagrant indifference" to workers' safety the night of the tornado.

In the lawsuit, plaintiffs allege that Mayfield Consumer Products required the 110 employees at the factory Friday night to work even though the company "knew or should have known about the expected tornado and the danger of serious bodily injuries and death to its employees if its employees were required to remain at its place of business during the pendency of the expected tornado." The lawsuit also invoked a claim the company has contested: That it refused to let workers leave the night of the tornado and threatened to fire them if they did so.

The company "showed flagrant indifference to the rights" of employees "with a subjective awareness that such conduct will result in human death and/or bodily injuries," the lawsuit reads.

As part of the lawsuit, the plaintiffs are seeking compensatory and punitive damages, prejudgment and post-judgment interests, attorney’s fees, and "a trial by jury on all issues so triable."

Someone Connected to My Smart TV, What Do I Do?

Should you detect unusual activity from your smart TV, the first thing you should do is log out of all your accounts.

After logging out, access those accounts from another device and change passwords.

You should enable two-factor authentication when possible.

Once you have secured your account, go over the recent activities or logins of your account and look for the suspicious activity so you can block it.

The Consumer Reports study concluded that most smart TVs and associated technologies like the Roku have only the most rudimentary of security features and can easily be hacked, giving the hackers total control of your TV. This includes the ability to turn it off, on, change the channel, and monitor your viewing habits. Given that, these TVs can also be voice-controlled. Once a hacker is in control of your set, he could monitor any conversations that take place near it without your knowledge.

The FBI recently stated your smart TV could be a gateway for hackers to come into your home. They may not be able to access your locked-down computer directly, but it’s possible an unsecured smart TV could give them a simple backdoor through your router.

They can also take control of your unsecured smart TV. Low-risk threats include changing channels, adjusting the TV’s volume and showing kids inappropriate videos. Worst-case scenarios include turning your bedroom TV’s camera and mic into a stalking spying device. Yikes!

Of itself hardly news, or good news if you're the type that subscribes to the notion that anybody not named you dying in El Paso, Texas is good news. In which case have I got news for you: the bawdy, fertile, redheaded matriarch of a sprawling Jewish-Mexican-Redneck American family has kicked it. This was not good news to Renay Mandel Corren's many surviving children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many of whom she even knew and, in her own way, loved. There will be much mourning in the many glamorous locales she went bankrupt in: McKeesport, PA, Renay's birthplace and where she first fell in love with ham, and atheism; Fayetteville and Kill Devil Hills, NC, where Renay's dreams, credit rating and marriage are all buried; and of course Miami, FL, where Renay's parents, uncles, aunts, and eternal hopes of all Miami Dolphins fans everywhere, are all buried pretty deep. Renay was preceded in death by Don Shula.

“Renay has been toying with death for decades, but always beating it and running off in her silver Chevy Nova,” the obituary states.

“Covid couldn’t kill Renay. Neither could pneumonia twice, infections, blood clots, bad feet, breast cancer twice, two mastectomies, two recessions, multiple bankruptcies, marriage to a philandering Sergeant Major, divorce in the 70s, six kids, one cesarean, a few abortions from the Quietly Famous Abortionist of Spring Lake, NC or an affair with Larry King in the 60s.”

It also lists her many talents: “She played cards like a shark, bowled and played cribbage like a pro, and laughed with the boys until the wee hours, long after the last pin dropped.”

“Renay didn’t cook, she didn’t clean, and she was lousy with money, too. Here’s what Renay was great at: dyeing her red roots, weekly manicures, dirty jokes, pier fishing, rolling joints and buying dirty magazines.”

The Turtle Hospital

The Turtle Hospital opened its doors 1986 with four main goals: 1) rehab injured sea turtles and return them to their natural habitat, 2) educate the public through outreach programs and visit local schools, 3) conduct and assist with research aiding to sea turtles (in conjunction with state universities), and 4) work toward environmental legislation making the beaches and water safe and clean for sea turtles.

The Turtle Hospital (Hidden Harbor Marine Environmental Project, Inc.) is a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation.
