GOP keeps lead for House control, Democrats' momentum stalls amid economy worries -- CBS News Battleg

GOP keeps lead for House control, Democrats' momentum stalls amid economy worries — CBS News Battleground Tracker poll

For two months the Democrats chipped away at the Republicans' lead in the battle for House control, helped by motivated abortion-rights voters and what turned out to be fleeting glimmers of optimism about the economy. But that momentum has stalled, at least for now, and the Republicans' House lead has stabilized today at 224 seats to the Democrats' 211. The Republicans' lead had shrunk in the two previous model runs of September and August.

What's behind this? Today's views of the economy have gotten worse amid continuing inflation, a volatile stock market and — in a stark reversal from August — people are reporting gas prices are rising in their neighborhoods. And voters are feeling this personally: more now say their own financial situation is bad, and there's more concern about saving and paying for things, compared to last month.

The Republicans still win voters who prioritize the economy but haven't been able to grow their share of them. Meanwhile the Democrats have not been able to grow the number of people prioritizing the abortion — an issue that favors them.

So, it's becoming clear that so much of the closing weeks will be about motivating turnout, and for all the attention these elections get, many eligible voters simply will not participate. To that end, we'll model a couple of scenarios that emerge from our data.

Judge rules federal law banning guns with serial numbers removed is unconstitutional

A federal judge blocked a federal law on Wednesday that prohibits the possession of a firearm with an “altered, obliterated or removed” serial number in light of the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling expanding gun rights earlier this year.

U.S. District Judge Joseph Goodwin ruled that no historical standard exists to demonstrate that firearms without a serial number are more dangerous or unusual than firearms with a serial number, so the law is unconstitutional.

He said in his ruling that he is abiding by the Supreme Court’s June decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, in which the court struck down a New York law placing additional limits on who can carry a firearm outside the home.

The court ruled that the state’s requirement that applicants demonstrate a “special need” to carry a firearm outside the home beyond self-defense violates the Second Amendment right to bear arms.

Had to look up the judge. I was very surprised that he was appointed by President Clinton.

Rep. Elissa Slotkin says Democrats need 'new blood' in 2024

Source: NBC News

Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., said Sunday the Democratic Party needs "new blood" in Congress and the White House in 2024 but committed to support President Joe Biden if he runs for re-election.

Asked in an interview on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” whether she would support Biden in the next presidential election, Slotkin, 46, who is running for re-election this year, said she would if he decides to run again and that she expects the party would support him, as well.

But she also noted: "I have been very vocal, including with my own leadership in the House, that we need a new generation. We need new blood, period, across the Democratic Party — in the House, the Senate and the White House. I think that the country has been saying that.”

“I’ve said, ‘I think we need new leaders.’ I would love to see some Midwestern leaders in there, right? That’s been important to me, to reflect the middle of the country. We’re here, too,” said Slotkin, who was among a handful of House members who voted against Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s, 82, leadership campaign.

Biden tells Al Sharpton he will run for president again in 2024

Source: NBC News

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden told the Rev. Al Sharpton that he will seek a second term in a private conversation at the White House last month, Sharpton informed his National Action Network staff in Washington later that day.

“I’m going to do it again,” Biden said as he posed for a photograph in the Roosevelt Room with Sharpton, who is also an MSNBC host, according to an official of Sharpton’s National Action Network who recounted Sharpton’s description. “I’m going.”

While Biden allies have said he will seek re-election, he has shied away from declaring it unequivocally, at least in part to avoid triggering campaign finance reporting laws. His remarks to Sharpton at the tail end of a meeting with the leaders of several of the country's most prominent civil rights organizations represent a stronger assertion that he will be on the ballot again.

NBC News has asked the White House for comment on Biden's intentions.
