WASHINGTON Chief Justice John Roberts publicly chastised Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Wednesday over comments Schumer made outside the Supreme Court as the justices were hearing a case on abortion rights.
Schumer, D-N.Y., suggested that President Donald Trump's court appointees, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, "won't know what hit" them if they vote to uphold abortion restrictions. He spoke during a rally on the sidewalk in front of the court building.
"I want to tell you, Gorsuch, I want to tell you, Kavanaugh, you have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price," Schumer said.
In a highly unusual written statement issued late Wednesday, Roberts said, "Statements of this sort from the highest levels of government are not only inappropriate, they are dangerous." "All members of the Court will continue to do their job, without fear or favor, from whatever quarter," Roberts said.

Alabama Senate polls
This is a couple of weeks ago, but it's the first I'm hearing of it. The real bad news is that this poll came before Jones voted to convict Trump, yikes! Anyway, here's a snip:
All three of them would beat Mr. Jones, according to the poll.
The poll found Mr. Sessions beating Mr. Jones 54%-41%, while Mr. Tuberville led him 50%-42% and Mr. Byrne by 51%-42%.
Overall, Mr. Jones came out underwater, with 47% of those polled viewing him unfavorably and just 31% favorably.
The poll was conducted while the Senate was mulling its vote in President Trumps impeachment trial. Mr. Trump remains popular in Alabama, and Mr. Jones Feb. 5 vote to remove him was regarded by some Alabama prognosticators as a death sentence to his reelection prospects.

Trump's controversial "public charge" rule takes effect, reshaping legal immigration

Washington The Trump administration on Monday began enforcing stringent income-based requirements for green cards and certain visas, instituting the most ambitious unilateral effort in recent history to change the nation's legal immigration system.
After multiple legal barriers blocking the implementation of the new requirements were cleared by the conservative-leaning Supreme Court, most green card applicants in the U.S. and abroad will now be subjected to a redefined "public charge" test. Under the rules by the Departments of State and Homeland Security, immigration officials have more power to deny applications from petitioners they deem are, or could become, an economic burden on the country.
The sweeping policy change, one of the administration's top immigration priorities, is expected to block the entry of hundreds of thousands of people, disproportionately affecting prospective immigrants from Asia, Africa and Latin America, according to experts.
Since it unveiled the final regulation last summer, the administration has portrayed it as a way to promote "self-sufficiency" among immigrant communities. " (The rule) enforces longstanding law requiring aliens to be self-sufficient, reaffirming the American ideals of hard work, perseverance and determination," said Ken Cuccinelli, the acting deputy secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

Supreme Court allow public charge rule to take effect across country

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Trump administration in a case that contested the presidents public charge rule, which critics have called a wealth test for legal immigrants.
The policy in question, the Immigration and Nationality Act, makes immigrants who are likely at any time to become a public charge ineligible for greencards. The policy virtually bars legal immigrants in the process of obtaining permanent legal status or citizenship from using public assistance, including Medicaid, housing vouchers and food stamps.
The case heard by the Court, Wolf v. Cook County, sought to reject the policys effect in Illinois. The district court filed a preliminary injunction, which temporarily stalled the policy in the state and sent the case to the Supreme Court. On Friday, the five conservative justices ruled in favor of the stay, while the liberal justices opposed it.
The Supreme Court had previously voted 5-4 in January to lift a nationwide injunction imposed by a federal judge in New York while the case plays out in appeals court. Last week Solicitor General Noel Francisco sent a request asking the court to do the same for an injunction imposed by an Illinois district court.

Breaking: Bloomberg qualifies for next Democratic debate
Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg on Tuesday qualified for his first appearance in a Democratic presidential primary debate.
The billionaire media mogul received 19 percent of support from an NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll, allowing him to join the stage at the Feb. 19 debate in Las Vegas.
Candidates need four national polls showing 10 percent or higher support or 12 percent or more in two single-state polls of Nevada and South Carolina. They have until 11:59 p.m. on Feb. 18 to qualify for the debate, which is being hosted by NBC News, MSNBC and the Nevada Independent.
Candidates can also qualify by winning at least one delegate from the Iowa caucus or the New Hampshire primary. To date, former Vice President Joe Biden, former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, and Sens. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., have all qualified for the stage, according to an unofficial NBC News survey.
