Warren on taking DNA test to prove Native American heritage: I know who I am

She was questioned during an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press" about an editorial in a Massachusetts newspaper, "Warren must resolve debate on heritage, which said a DNA test would "permanently resolve the issue."

“Look, I do know. I know who I am. And never used it for anything. Never got any benefit from it anywhere," Warren said.

"But what I did a couple of weeks ago is I went to talk to the leaders of the native tribes across the country,” she added.

“And I talked about the fact that President Trump can't seem to hear my name without trying to throw a racial slur into it. Can't seem to make it through a ceremony honoring Native American war heroes without trying to make something else out of it.”
President Trump has poked at Warren over the claim, referring to the senator as “Pocahontas.”

What do you do when the kids get left behind?

Across the West young people are being left behind. Unemployment rates are significantly higher for young people than any other age group. In the UK the figure has got as high as nearly a million, but is now sitting stubbornly @ 12.5%, against an overall rate of 4.2%. In some countries it is knocking on the door of 50%. Overall in Europe the rate is 16.1% against an overall unemployment rate of 7.3%. In America the youth unemployment rate is better @ 9.2% in January 2018, compared to an overall unemployment rate of 4.1%, not as concerning as in Europe, but still a full 5 percentage points higher than the average!

This must be a concern, right? I mean these kids are the ones that are going to be ruling the country when we are in our dotage. Their taxes will pay for our essential services. If we are not providing them with the jobs to develop their skills and earn their own money we are going to lose a whole generation to sustained and long-term unemployment and reliance on the state for support. That is a scary thought. But what can we do about it? As an employer is it my responsibility to employ young people who do not have the same level of skills (yet)? It has the potential to impact on organisational productivity in lean times. Of course, if we do not take it upon ourselves to employ and help young people develop their employability and vocational skills surely we are all in for a whole world of pain later on down the road?

So, what do we do? The kids are getting left behind. Do you remember the recession of the early 90’s? Whole communities got left behind then and never caught up again. In this time of austerity instead of a community it is a generation. Truly, a frightening thought.

Counter-terror police investigate 'Punish a Muslim Day' letters received across UK

Threatening letters calling for a "Punish a Muslim Day" on 3 April are being investigated by counter-terror police.

Muslims in London, Yorkshire and the Midlands have reported receiving the letter that calls for attacks in a points-scoring system.

The note incites verbal abuse and assaults on Muslims, as well as attacks on mosques.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed it had received six reports related to the letters.

The force said it had a couple of letters that will undergo analysis in an attempt to determine their origin.

Should modern values change Christianity? Of course they should.

For the last 2000 years as the West has developed its customs rights and laws they have looked to the bible to help shape the fundamental culture and behaviours of nations. Here we are in 2018, living in the secular west and enjoying a freedom of choice that man and women kind has never known before. Only a generation ago women were condemned for having children out of wed lock, now about 50% of children are born to non-traditional families. In living memory gay men were sent to prison for their sexuality. Now the freedom for them to marry and be as miserable as the rest of us is here. Still the religious right resists change.

In the UK our rather unfortunate habit of jumping into ships to spread the good word of the bible led to an Empire on which the sun never set, a legacy of slavery, enforced conversions and colonialism that will forever be a stain on our national character. But time moved on. Values changed and as our values changed so did those of the church. Forced conversions of native peoples became something that was part of an embarrassing history, rather than as strategy for continued growth of church membership.

It would seem to be that the church does change with the times. Just more slowly than anyone else. Something that the religious right always fights against but generally they seldom win the battle in the long run. A classic example of course is the Inquisition. Not a great look for the Catholic Church. Fast forward a few hundred years and we can safely say that modern values helped change that very Christian policy of torture and murder. Can you imagine if Pope Francis came at you with a hot poker today? The outcry would be immediate and prolonged. Modern values would just not allow it.

So here we are today. At yet another crossroads. Christianity, in the form of the religious right particularly, is resisting embracing the values of the 21st century with a fierce howl of protest at the unfairness of it all, that they are right dammit. That they know the truth, that their values are the only values, that they are RIGHT. But hell, they say that again and again, a myriad of issues over the generations that would lead to the death and destruction of all, the collapse of civilisation, the falling sky and the end of the world. But nothing bad happened and so the values of the church developed to better reflect their communities. Again, and again and again. So, should modern values change Christianity? It already does. Just not as quickly as we would like sometimes. Think of those poor witches burning on the stake in medieval times, I bet they wish someone in power had had a light bulb moment before they were condemned. But eventually that light bulb moment came and Christianity grew up a little bit more.

Pot activists are selling rolling papers featuring Jeff Sessions smoking a joint

A marijuana advocacy group has an amusing new product for sale. The packaging for “General Jeff’s ‘Old Rebel’ Session Papers” features U.S. Attorney General’s Jeff Sessions’ face with a joint in his mouth.

On the group #JeffSesh’s website, they say they’re running a campaign to inform Sessions that people who use pot for recreation or medicine “are not criminals.”

Let's Give It up to Trump and Pence for Having Wives and Daughters!

Yesterday, in honor and celebration of pieces of ass and things we presumably do, the GOP give itself a pat on the back by clarifying on social media that Trump has appointed a ton of women, actually. In September 2017, the Guardian estimated that only 20% of nominations for top jobs have gone to women, putting Trump “on track to assemble the most male-dominated federal government in nearly a quarter-century”–but whatever, they made a photo album! They could think of seven women, then they threw in Melania Trump, Ivanka Trump, and Karen Pence.

Evidence mounts that the Russian government may be using the UK and US as a 'killing ground'.....

.....to eliminate its enemies

Britain offers wealthy Russians many attractions: the great city of London, the bucolic countryside, exclusive schools, and a global financial hub. But for some former spies and other foes of President Vladimir Putin, it has become lethal.

The latest victims near death's door are 66-year-old Sergei Skripal — a former colonel in Russia's military intelligence service, then a turncoat helping British agents who was convicted in Russia before being freed in a spy swap— and his 33-year-old daughter, Yulia. Both were found comatose on a public bench Sunday in the medieval English city of Salisbury.

-------------------

Some lawmakers and a former top law enforcement official say the nerve agent attack fits a pattern of suspicious deaths in the U.K. and in the United States. They are calling for a high-level police investigation into whether Britain has become a killing ground for the state-sanctioned elimination of enemies of the Russian government.

The deaths that have caused qualms include a man who was impaled through the chest by the spikes of an iron fence; a former Putin aide found dead in a Washington hotel room with blunt force injuries; and an ex-spy poisoned by radioactive tea.
