This is because, at the end of the day, evangelicalism isn’t really about personal values but, rather, social and political conversion and control. Little has changed, in this sense, since the days of Jerry Falwell and his Moral Majority (as Daniel Schultz rightly pointed out recently on RD).

The Trump era, then, does not create a new problem for evangelicals and their image; it’s simply casting a very bright light on what has always been there, at least for the past forty years or so.

If evangelical support for Trump sounds more calculated than sincere because of this, that’s because it is. But while critics charge evangelicals with hypocrisy, with undercutting their own assumed moral authority for the sake of political success, it’s important to emphasize, that this more pragmatic approach to social change isn’t completely outside their own religious traditions, and it’s questionable the extent to which evangelicals ever held much moral authority in the first place.

Barack Obama, if you want to talk about inequality and gun violence, you are the biggest perpetrator of it. Because while you left educators defenseless, while you pushed policies that barred violent students from being arrested, while you railed against the NRA, your daughters, yourself were all protected by armed guards. Your daughters in a school with strict discipline policies in place at all times because you knew that’s what makes schools safer. Discipline, order and as a last case scenario, good guys with guns. But that was only good enough for your family. The Parkland students you now write about in Time magazine, that protection wasn’t good enough for them. You played politics with their lives and now you have duped them into thanking you for it when you are the one who should be apologizing.

President Trump on Saturday attacked The New York Times for its reporting on his personal attorney, Michael Cohen, and expressed confidence Cohen will remain loyal to him while under federal investigation.

“The New York Times and a third rate reporter named Maggie Habberman (sic), known as a Crooked H flunkie who I don’t speak to and have nothing to do with, are going out of their way to destroy Michael Cohen and a relationship with me in the hope that he will ‘flip,’” Trump tweeted.

"Sorry, I don’t see Michael doing that despite the horrible Witch Hunt and the dishonest media!" he added.

Now, President Trump is taking funds from programs designed to reduced teen pregnancies and diverting it back to abstinence programs. According to The Hill, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced this Friday that funds for Obama’s Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program, (TPPP) would now be pointed towards abstinence education for teens instead of the comprehensive sex ed that Obama championed.

“Projects will clearly communicate that teen sex is a risk behavior for both the physical consequences of pregnancy and sexual transmitted infections; as well as sociological, economic and other related risks,” the funding announcement reads. “Both risk avoidance and risk reduction approaches can and should include skills associated with helping youth delay sex as well as skills to help those youth already engaged in sexual risk to return toward risk-free choices in the future.”

A Republican state lawmaker in Pennsylvania is calling a colleague a “lying homosexual” in a Facebook post attacking liberal legislators. Rep. Daryl Metcalfe also is defending his comments, which he made Friday.

He tells The Associated Press that he mentioned the sexual orientation of Democratic Rep. Brian Sims of Philadelphia because Sims has spoken openly about being gay, and because he believes it is “immoral behavior.”

Sims is calling Metcalfe “Rep. Snowflake McRacist” on Twitter and says Metcalfe “claims victimhood” when he’s called out in public. Metcalfe also recently accosted another state lawmaker for repeatedly touching his arm, and suggested the man might be gay.

Friday evening news broke that North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un had announced he is ending nuclear testing and shutting down his nuclear testing site.

This is propaganda. It has not been verified, and only time will tell. Kim Jong-un could flip-flop Saturday morning. More importantly, however, he doesn't need to test his nuclear weapons because he has fully-functional nuclear weapons. The testing phase is over.

So what does the world's greatest negotiator do? Does he say, "Time will tell"? Does he present a cautious front? Does he challenge the veracity of a man who has lied about matters of grave concern before, who has little credibility throughout the world?
