Father of man who shot Ahmaud Arbery seeks leniency in hate crimes sentence

The white man who initiated the neighborhood chase that resulted in the fatal shooting of Ahmaud Arbery is asking a federal judge to show leniency when he's sentenced next week for a federal hate crime conviction.

While Greg McMichael deserves "a substantial period of incarceration," his defense attorney said in a legal filing, he should be spared a life sentence — though he has already been sentenced to life without parole on a separate murder conviction.

McMichael also wants the judge to transfer him to a federal prison so that he avoids serving time for Arbery's murder in Georgia's state prison system, which can't ensure his safety from attacks by other inmates, the lawyer said.

McMichael, 66, is scheduled to be sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court along with his adult son, Travis McMichael, and their neighbor, William "Roddie" Bryan. A jury convicted all three in February of committing hate crimes, concluding 25-year-old Arbery had been targeted because he was Black.

Agents protecting Pence feared 'for their own lives,' official says

Source: Washington Post

For 13 minutes on Jan. 6, 2021, as smoke clouded the air and Vice President Mike Pence hid from rioters in his office adjacent to the Senate chamber, his Secret Service detail scrambled — in increasingly frantic radio messages — to clear a path for Pence to flee the Capitol.

On Thursday, the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack revealed harrowing video and audio that showed just how perilously close Pence and his protective detail came to danger, detailing how the protesters whom President Donald Trump had riled up turned their anger on the man he blamed for failing to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

“We need to move now,” an agent said, according to excerpts of radio traffic played by the committee. “If we lose any more time, we may lose the ability to do so.”

Pence’s Secret Service detail described smoke of unknown origin filling a hallway of the Capitol and protesters advancing on outnumbered police. “Harden that door up,” one agent said.

Please tell me that TFG can't win in 2024

Someone talk me down. I can't imagine living through another term. The MAGAts will be worse than ever.

And while you are at it: Please tell me we are not going to lose the House and Senate in the mid-terms.

Either way pm me a benzo.

Judge orders Sen. Lindsey Graham to testify for special grand jury in Trump election probe

A Fulton County judge ordered U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., to testify before a special grand jury in Fulton County next month.

Graham is one of eight people jury members subpoenaed last week. Graham said he would fight the subpoena.

On Monday, the judge declared Graham a “necessary witness” to the investigation.

This is another step in a long legal process of getting Graham down from Washington to testify.

I do get it most days but it takes me more tries than the ones who post in the morning threads. I just want to know if I am just stupid or do others do as well as me.
