'Afghan Girl' from 1985 National Geographic cover is evacuated to Italy at age 49

'Afghan Girl' from 1985 National Geographic cover is evacuated to Italy at age 49

"Afghan Girl" who was on the cover of National Geographic in 1985 was just evacuated to Italy.
Sharbat Gula, 49, lived anonymously for many years in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
She's in Rome as part an evacuation program for Afghan citizens, Italian government said.
The "Afghan Girl" with piercing green eyes who gained worldwide recognition after appearing on the cover of a 1985 National Geographic has fled her home country and arrived in Rome.

The Italian government said in a statement on Thursday that the move was "part of the wider evacuation programme in place for Afghan citizens" since the Taliban gained control of Afghanistan. CNN reported that she has been granted refugee status by Italy's Prime Minister Mario Draghi.

The girl, Sharbat Gula, now 49, was photographed in a Pakistani refugee camp during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in 1984.

At the time, Gula was roughly 12 years old, and sitting in a tent being used as a classroom. After her picture was taken, she grew up, left the refugee camp in the early 1990s, started a family, and remained largely anonymous until the American photographer who took her photo, Steve McCurry, tracked her down again in 2002.

tourist thought Noah's ark crocodile was lifelike model. Climbed in pool for selfies, tapped it

Tourist Attacked By 12 Foot Crocodile After Posing With It For A Selfie

A tourist in Phillippines was savaged by a 12-foot crocodile after as he posed with it to snap some selfies. Nehemias Chipada, 68, climbed in a pool with the reptile at a theme park in the Philippines to take pictures, believing it to be a life-like model.

Chipada, from the Misamis Oriental province, was visiting the Amaya View amusement park in Cagayan de Oro City with his family to celebrate his birthday on November 10, when the attack took place.

As Chipada stood holding his phone in his right hand, the crocodile lunged at him grabbing his dangling left arm and dragging him into the water in front of his terrified family, Yahoo News reported.

Fortunately, Chipada was able to break free of the animal and escape with his limbs intact, reportedly taking with him one of the crocodile's teeth. According to his daughter, Chipada is recovering from the attack in Northern Mindanao Medical Center and had received surgery on his left arm.

Chipada and his family members were posing and taking pictures with concrete replicas of animals in Amaya View's fenced-off Noah's Ark exhibition. The 68-year-old believed that the crocodile was another of the replicas and stood next to it, giving it a tap on the head moments before the savage attack, Philippine News Agency reported.

81 yr old Federal judge changes his mind about stepping down, eliminating vacancy for Biden to fill

A federal judge who announced in August that he would step down from active service has informed the White House he changed his mind, eliminating a vacancy on the bench President Biden could fill.

Robert King, 81, who serves with the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va., told Biden he would not be taking senior status after all in a letter obtained by Reuters.

"After careful consideration, I have decided to continue for the foreseeable future in regular active service," King said in the letter.

King also apologized to the president for the "inconvenience." Per Reuters, he did not give a reason for reversing his prior decision.

Several witnesses saw the crash, Shelton said in court. Rufo abruptly passed Strain, then swerved back in front of Strain and braked, causing the crash, Shelton said in court. Strain, a father and husband, lost control of his motorcycle when it crashed into Rufo’s truck and was slammed against a guard rail, Shelton said. Rufo claimed to S.C. Highway Patrol troopers Strain gave Rufo a middle finger gesture before the crash, Shelton said in court.

“He (Rufo) claimed Mr. Strain flipped him off and (Strain) patted his saddle bags as if he had a gun,” Shelton said in court. “One of the eyewitnesses would have testified that Mr. Rufo said, ‘You didn’t see what he (Strain) did, he had it coming.’ ”

Rufo also claimed to police he braked in front of Strain because of other traffic, Shelton said in court. But several witnesses who saw the collision refuted that claim, Shelton said.

Oakland Toyota dealership accused of 'price gouging,' reportedly asking $96K for a RAV4, double MSRP

A 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime is on sale at a Toyota dealership in Oakland for the staggering price of nearly over $96,000, nearly double its initial MSRP, according to a viral car sticker image that has made the rounds on social media.

The “dealer added markup” has drawn particular ire, costing $40,000 on top of the original market-rate price. The other "installed options" on this vehicle, according to the photo, include LoJack vehicle protections, ceramic coating and paint protection.

After first being posted on Reddit over the weekend, with posters calling the markup “beyond the pale” and accusing the dealership of “price gouging,” the image has since circulated onto car enthusiasts’ websites and TikTok.

The car blog Jalopnik reached out Tuesday to confirm the markup with the dealership, and they did not technically deny the spiked cost of the SUV.

Abortions in the U.S. may be inching up after decades of decline, 18% of pregnancies are aborted

https://www.latimes.com/science/story/2021-11-24/abortions-in-us-may-be-inching-up-after-decades-of-decline

National abortion figures in 2017 reached their lowest level since the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized the procedure.

But the next two years, there were small increases in the number and rate of abortions, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported.

They rose 1% in 2018. The next year, the numbers increased 2% and the rate per 1,000 women of child-bearing age rose 1%.

The CDC report represents the latest available data on U.S. abortions. But it must be interpreted cautiously because it is based on voluntary reporting and is not comprehensive, experts say.

“If it means more people are getting access to care when they need it, then this is a positive development,” Jones said.

L.A. firefighter accused of 'despicable act' with vaccination non compliance letter

L.A. firefighter accused of ‘despicable act’ in protest over vaccine mandate

The Los Angeles Fire Department is investigating an incident in which a firefighter “responded inappropriately” after being handed a letter to comply with the city’s vaccine mandate, a department spokeswoman said Wednesday.

The Stentorians of Los Angeles City, a group representing African American firefighters, said Wednesday that the LAFD member responded to receiving the non-compliance letter by dropping his pants and wiping his buttocks with the letter, leaving fecal matter on the document. He then dropped the letter on the ground.

The alleged incident underscores the deep resistance among some within the Fire Department over the city’s mandate that employees be vaccinated.

LAFD spokeswoman Cheryl Getuiza said the alleged incident occurred on Nov. 18. “The department is aware of the seriousness of the allegations and took immediate action upon learning of this incident,” she said Wedn

An LAFD captain and a chief officer witnessed the incident, the group said in a statement sent to the Board of Fire Commissioners and city leaders. It took place at Fire Station 69 in Pacific Palisades, the group said.
