Colorado journalist threatened with jail for not acting "like a lady"

Bodycam footage released on Tuesday shows Denver police detaining a journalist attempting to photograph them as they were responding to an incident on a public sidewalk.

Susan Greene, editor of The Colorado Independent, says she stopped in downtown Denver last month after seeing a naked, African-American man who was handcuffed and surrounded by police.

Greene said that as she attempted to photograph the situation, two officers blocked her from taking photos, saying that medical privacy law supersedes her First Amendment rights and threatening to arrest her for interference.

The footage shows police taking Greene's phone and handcuffing her as she attempts to photograph one officer's badge. One officer tells her to stand up and “act like a lady.”

“Are you f---ing kidding me?” Greene responds in the video. “Act like a lady?”

“There you go,” the officer responds, “now you can go to jail.”

Greene was briefly detained in the patrol car and released after about 12 minutes, according to the Independent. Denver authorities said the man surrounded by police was brought to a hospital and released later that night.

Greene wrote in a blog post that she had an interest in the situation because her investigative work has largely focused on police brutality against black men.

District Attorney Beth McCann told Greene that the office would not press charges against the officers, but noted that officer telling her to “act like a lady” was “a little unnecessary.”

California burger chain In-N-Out donated $25,000 to the California Republican Party, a public filing on the California Secretary of State's website shows.

The donation was spotted by reporter Gabe Schneider, who shared the news on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon.

"In-N-Out added a new item to their secret menu," Schneider tweeted.

A number of Twitter users immediately called for a boycott of the fast food chain, using the hashtag #boycottinnout.

"No more for me," one user tweeted. "I refuse to spend money at any firm (when I have choices) that donates money to the Republican party or any Republican candidate."

arrested! that man who punched woman in france for rejecting his advances

https://www.npr.org/2018/08/28/642621654/in-france-man-arrested-after-video-of-harassment-goes-viral

According to French public radio Franceinfo, the 25-year-old suspect had been undergoing psychiatric treatment at a Parisian hospital for the past month. He was taken into police custody after leaving the hospital. Authorities have not officially released his name.

Apparently his stay at the hospital was not connected to the incident caught on video.

The man has not been formally charged with a crime, according to The Associated Press. "Magistrates will now decide whether to put him under formal investigation for sexual harassment and violence," the wire service reports. "The formal investigation is a first step towards an indictment."

Laguerre will have to identify the suspect in custody on Wednesday, French public radio adds.

The CCTV video, which has been viewed more than 6 million times after it was posted by Laguerre, shows a man walking past her on the street. He verbally harassed her, she said, and she then told him to "shut up" and continued walking.

The man then stops and grabs an ashtray from the cafe next to him. He hurls it in Laguerre's direction and then walks over to her and punches her in the face. Witnesses at the cafe appear shocked, and some stand up to confront the man. After a brief discussion, he walks away.

Florida's GOP gubernatorial nominee says a vote for his black opponent would 'monkey this up'

resh off his victory in the Florida Republican gubernatorial primary, Rep. Ron DeSantis said Wednesday that voters would "monkey this up" if they elected his African-American opponent, Andrew Gillum, to be governor, immediately drawing accusations of racism.

The remark provides a controversial beginning to what will be a closely watched general election for the Florida governorship, which pits DeSantis, who has closely aligned himself with President Donald Trump, against Gillum, a progressive backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Calling him "an articulate spokesman" for the far left, DeSantis said during an interview on Fox News when asked about his opponent Gillum, "The last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases and bankrupting the state."

Gillum would become the state's first black governor if he were to win in November.
"It's very clear that Mr. DeSantis is taking a page directly from the campaign manual of Donald Trump," Gillum told Fox News' Shepard Smith hours later.

Donald Trump Was Forced To Unblock Twitter Critics. Now They're Getting Sweet Revenge.

President Donald Trump ― or whoever has access to his Twitter account ― apparently spent part of Tuesday evening unblocking users.

Since taking office, Trump has blocked a number of people for criticizing him or even just cracking jokes at his expense, including celebrities such as model Chrissy Teigen and author Stephen King.

However, in May, a federal judge said Trump’s blocks were unconstitutional as his Twitter feed was a public forum which “has been used in the course of the appointment of officers (including cabinet secretaries), the removal of officers and the conduct of foreign policy.”

----

Although the Justice Department announced in June that it would appeal, earlier this month, Knight asked the White House to unblock an additional 41 accounts. On Tuesday night, that happened ― at least for some of them.

Knight is now asking others who have been Trump-blocked to get in touch.

Comedy writer Bess Kalb took a moment to savor the victory:

Then, newly unblocked by Trump, she turned around and blocked him instead:

Two black pastors wanted help with a flat tire. A sheriff's deputy asked if they had guns or drugs.

They were stuck on the side of a suburban highway, waiting for assistance. Instead, they what they got was a jarring question from a sheriff’s deputy and a background check.

On the way home from a fishing trip in May, Demetrius Williams and John Patterson — both pastors at Baptist churches in Milwaukee — got a flat tire on their boat trailer. They pulled to the edge of the bustling interstate and called an insurance company. As they waited for a tow truck to help with a spare tire, a Waukesha County Sheriff’s car pulled up behind them, lights flashing.

A deputy, Erik Michalsen, approached the two pastors in the Chevrolet Silverado. After the men explained they were awaiting assistance for the flat, Michalsen, the men say, asked them if they had any drugs, guns or alcohol in the truck.

“Sir, we’re both pastors,” Williams remembers explaining. “We wouldn’t have anything like that.”

When the deputy asked for both men’s licenses, Williams felt himself growing agitated, confused at why they were being treated like criminals when they hadn’t even been pulled over and should have gotten help. Stay calm, he thought to himself. There’s no telling what might happen. When he asked the deputy why it was necessary see their licenses, the deputy said it was standard procedure.

Deputy Michalsen returned the licenses 10 minutes later and smacked an orange sticker — used to mark abandoned vehicles — on the side of the boat, even though the men had explained they were staying with the boat and waiting for service. The pastors were rattled.

“This isn’t right,” Williams said. “We’re sitting here waiting for roadside assistance, and this man is treating us like we’re criminals.”

--------

The department conducted an investigation without speaking to either Williams or Patterson. It explained Michalsen asks every driver he approaches about weapons and drugs and justified the rest with procedures for traffic stops, even though the pastors had not committed a moving violation and were not pulled over.

Now Common Ground is requesting records of Michalsen’s past 45 days of narratives from traffic stops and disabled vehicle interactions. It is also asking the community to share stories of contact with the sheriff’s department — both positive and negative.

Record High Number Of STD Infections In U.S., As Prevention Funding Declines

For the fourth year in a row, federal health officials report that there has been a sharp increase in sexually transmitted diseases in the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tallied nearly 2.3 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis in 2017 — an increase of 200,000 cases over the previous year, and a record high.

Chlamydia, a bacterial infection, remained the most common sexually transmitted disease, with more than 1.7 million reported cases. But health officials are concerned that gonorrhea cases increased a startling 67 percent between 2013 and 2017, and syphilis climbed even faster — 76 percent over those four years.

After many years of success in controlling sexually transmitted diseases, "We've been sliding backwards," says Dr. Gail Bolan, director of the CDC's Division of STD Prevention. She spoke at a news conference in Washington Tuesday.

"The U.S. continues to have the highest STD rates in the industrialized world," says David Harvey, executive director of the National Coalition of STD Directors, "and it preys on the most vulnerable among us."

"Here's a quote for members of the media," Harvey said at the press conference. "Ready? It is time that President Trump and Secretary [of Health and Human Services Alex] Azar declare STDs in America a public health crisis."

Harvey argues the root of the problem is that federal funding to prevent and control sexually transmitted diseases has dropped by roughly 40 percent in the past 15 years, which has choked off state and local programs. He called on Congress to appropriate $70 million immediately to address the crisis.
