CA gov candidate Larry Elder said employers should be able to ask women if & when will get pregnant

Elder, who is running in the recall election to unseat Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, expressed his views on the subject in the 2002 book "Showdown: Confronting Bias, Lies, and the Special Interests that Divide America," Media Matters reported last week.

In the book, Elder wrote: "Are there legitimate business reasons for a venture capitalist to ask a female entrepreneur whether and when she intends to have children? Hell, yes."

He compared it to a sports team forbidding its players from taking part in "hazardous conduct not related to their sport."

"Call it protecting an investment," he added.

He also suggested women who have kids aren't "committed" to work, Media Matters reported.

When asked about the comments by the Associated Press on Wednesday, Elder stood by his past statements, responding, "government should not be intruding into the relationship between employer and employee."

If Larry Elder is elected, life will get harder for Black and Latino Californians

https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2021-08-18/larry-elder-racism-immigration-recall-republican

The California recall election’s Republican front-runner, Larry Elder, has built a career as a Black radio talk show host who isn’t afraid to deny the reality of systemic racism by maligning Black people. He likes to call himself “the sage from South-Central.”

The problem is, the statistics he’s shared over the decades to support his views and policy proposals are misleading, if not outright false, casting Black people as unusually crime-prone. In some cases, the bogus data come directly from Jared Taylor, a leading white supremacist Elder has repeatedly cited in his articles and books.

----------------------

Elder told The Times last week that he plans to “change the rhetoric about how bad the cops are.” Last year, he shared a graphic with so-called facts depicting Black people as murderous, echoing similar claims he’s made on air for decades: “Blacks kill 2x as many whites (500) as whites kill Blacks (250),” and “Blacks, 13% of pop., commit 50% of murders.”

Jeffrey Fagan, a law professor at Columbia University, said of these numbers: “This is an extraordinarily dishonest rendering.” He and other criminal experts say Black people don’t disproportionately victimize whites, nor are they more inclined toward violent crimes.

================
In an early “BET Tonight” appearance with Tavis Smiley, Elder said: “Rape, murder, uh, robbery with aggravated manslaughter, about 90% of that involves a Black perpetrator.” Government data show that’s a gross exaggeration.

------------
Elder has long conflated Latinos with crime. In his memoir, he wrote that an influx of “legal and illegal Hispanics” near the Convention Center made the area “gang infested, and much more dangerous.” He told The Times he plans to use the “bully pulpit,” and favors the term “illegal alien,” not “undocumented.” He’s sought advice from Gov. Pete Wilson, who normalized “invasion” rhetoric.

"Gulf Coast's beloved 'Redneck Riviera' now a virus hotspot"

The U.S. Gulf Coast is glowing like a bad sunburn on maps that show COVID-19 trouble spots in red. Alabama's coastal counties lead the state in new cases, and some events have been canceled in Florida and Louisiana because of the latest surge. (Aug. 19)

Florida Judge Makes Man Write Apology Letter After Racially Profiling Black Teen

A Florida circuit judge wants to make sure a man has truly learned his lesson after racially profiling a teenager.

Luis Santos-Santiago was sentenced to 12 months’ probation on Tuesday after earlier pleading guilty to assault with prejudice. But Hillsborough County Circuit Judge Lyann Goudie didn’t stop there. She told Santos-Santiago to write an apology letter to the teen he profiled, gave him 25 hours of community service, and suggested he watch Ava DuVernay’s documentary 13th to educate himself more about the criminal justice system and being Black in America. He was also instructed to take an implicit bias class and an anger management class.

“Except for my gender, I don’t wear my minority on my skin,” Goudie said. “I can’t even imagine what it’s like to be a Black person living in our country, being profiled, being stopped, being assumed that they’re up to no good, committing a crime, don’t belong.”

In June 2020, Santos-Santiago accused a Black teen who was on his way to basketball practice of breaking into cars. The 56-year-old went so far as to film himself stopping the teenager at 5 a.m. in Seffner, Florida, a suburb of Tampa. The footage showed Santos-Santiago badgering the teen and asking him where he lives.

Santos-Santiago called 911, claiming that he was an off-duty officer. He told the dispatcher, “I have somebody breaking into cars. I got him with his hands up.”

Santos-Santiago is a former security officer, and his license expired a week after the incident. Needless to say, his background in security did not give him the authority to stop and hold the teen. He was charged with illegally detaining the teenager.

The woman, identified by the local NBC station as Patricia Schmidt, is employed as an Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Specialist at Lely Elementary School.

On Saturday she was driving a grey sedan in the Kings Lake neighborhood of Collier County when she stopped, lowered her window and went on a racist tirade against the family.

According to the mother of the child, who chose to remain anonymous, the incident took place after she and the kids walked a path designated for residents.

“[Schmidt] blares on her horn for like ten seconds, rolls her window down and starts yelling out the window that we can’t walk down that pathway,” the mother said.

Team MAGA Goes Full Nativist On Afghan Refugees: "Not one Afghan should be coming to America"

Fox News, a vanguard of the MAGA movement, set the tone of opposition to resettling Afghans fleeing the Taliban. Starting late Monday night, the network’s primetime lineup responded to the images of refugees huddled in the cargo bay of a C-17 with a collective “not here.”

Primetime host Tucker Carlson moaned that Afghans had “invaded” the country and that “millions” of refugees would swarm the U.S., “probably in your neighborhood,” while Laura Ingraham wondered whether America’s promises to Afghan employees and soldiers were really valid in the face of "thousands of potentially unvetted refugees" entering the country. Both Fox News stars have for years been informal advisers to Trump, including by privately counseling him on policy matters during his presidency.

In Congress, House Republicans like Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-WI) called reports of Afghans heading to the U.S. as “disturbing” and warned against “releasing tens of 1000’s of Afghans into our communities.” Montana’s Republican congressman Matt Rosendale warned that the Taliban’s takeover in the wake of the U.S. withdrawal was "not an excuse to flood our country with refugees from Afghanistan." Mary Miller, a freshman congresswoman from Illinois, let her priorities be known on Twitter. “Refugees must be vetted. Keep America safe!”

On Tuesday morning, Steve Cortes, a Newsmax host and former Trump 2020 adviser, tweeted, “Not one Afghan should be coming to America. They should stay in [the] region. We have bases in Iraq and supposed allies in the Gulf — time for UAE, Saudi Arabia, India, [and] Israel to all step up.” The same day, fellow Newsmax personality Emerald Robinson posted, “We have 80,000 Afghan ‘allies’ who want to be evacuated to the US? That's the same number as the Taliban. Tell those people to grab a rifle and fight for their country.”
