Police remove 'offensive' Halloween decoration resembling a lynched black man

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2018/09/28/illinois-police-remove-halloween-decoration-lynched-black-man/1455444002/

Police in Lansing, Illinois removed a Halloween decoration that appeared to depict a black man being lynched after photos of the display sparked social media backlash.

Toya Griffin said her daughter first spotted the figure — a black mannequin hanging from a tree with its hands and ankles tied — while they were talking on the phone, according to the Times of Northwest Indiana.

"It's a shocking feeling to see something like that. It represents a feeling. It represents a belief. It represents a harsh time in history that affected everybody," Griffin told the Times. "If you see something like that, it brings a fear and it brings emotions."

Griffin said in a Facebook post Wednesday that she notified police, who initially told her they didn't see anything wrong with the display.

Will Ruth III, 24, said he saw Griffin’s posts about the incident and drove over to the home to see the display for himself. Ruth expressed concern that the display, which was across the street from a park and near a school, could be seen by children.

He said six or seven neighbors gathered in front of the home, talking with the homeowner or viewing the display. A Facebook live video of the decoration and a confrontation with the homeowner posted by Ruth has been viewed more than 61,000 times.

“She told me that she personally didn’t feel like it was anything wrong the hanging, that she had black people in her family,” Ruth said. “To me, that wasn’t a really great excuse at all.”

When the police arrived, Ruth said the woman’s story changed.

Police who spoke with the homeowner said the mannequin originally had a “Jason style” mask on, which had recently been stolen, according to a press release from the Lansing Illinois Police Department. Officers said they confirmed this detail with several neighbors. Without the mask, all that remained on the head was a black plastic bag.

At the end of Ruth’s nearly 30-minute long video, police can be seen taking down the display. But police maintain that the decoration, which was being described as "offensive," was not intended to cause harm.

Trump anti-discrimination official faces rebellion at agency over racially tinged blog posts

https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/trump-anti-discrimination-official-faces-rebellion-at-agency-over-racially-tinged-blog-posts/2018/09/28/ed5b8e6a-c351-11e8-97a5-ab1e46bb3bc7_story.html

A senior Trump appointee at an agency responsible for enforcing laws against financial discrimination faced open rebellion from subordinates Friday over blog posts he wrote years ago expressing controversial views on the n-word and hate crimes, according to internal emails obtained by The Washington Post.

The uproar came as two Democrats on the Senate Banking Committee and a national housing rights organization called for the departure of the appointee, Eric Blankenstein, a policy director at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

The upheaval was triggered by a mass email from a senior civil servant who harshly criticized the writings, which The Post revealed and linked to Blankenstein in a report Wednesday. Writing under a pen name in 2004, Blankenstein questioned whether the n-word was inherently racist and claimed that the great majority of hate crimes were hoaxes.

“The tone and framing are deeply disturbing to me as a woman, African American, advocate for LGBTQ rights, and human being,” Patrice A. Ficklin, a career staffer and director of the Office of Fair Lending and Equal Opportunity, wrote to hundreds of agency employees.

GEORGETOWN PREP, WARNED PARENTS IN 1990 OF "SEXUAL OR VIOLENT BEHAVIOR" AT PARTIES

KAVANAUGH’S HIGH SCHOOL, GEORGETOWN PREP, WARNED PARENTS IN 1990 OF “SEXUAL OR VIOLENT BEHAVIOR” AT PARTIES

ACCORDING TO A 1990 article in the Washington Post, the headmasters from seven prestigious Washington, D.C.-area private schools sent a joint letter that year to parents, warning them that their children had developed a party culture that included heavy drinking leading to “sexual or violent behavior.”

One of the schools was Georgetown Prep, from which Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh graduated in 1983. Christine Blasey Ford, who during congressional testimony on Thursday described being sexually assaulted by Kavanaugh in 1982, attended one of the other schools, Holton-Arms.

The Post article also reported that before the letter was sent, Georgetown Prep had “held a conference with parents to discuss the problem of unsupervised parties.”

Malcolm Coates, then-headmaster of the Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland, is quoted saying that the schools decided to write the letter jointly “to give it more impact. … The fact that seven schools decided it was enough of a problem to address it is significant.”

male / female view of SCOTUS moving in opposite directions

On Friday, Gallup released new poll data showing that the antipathy women express toward Kavanaugh is reflected in their views toward the Supreme Court on the whole. While the percentage of Americans who approve of the Supreme Court has held fairly steady, the percentage of women who do has dropped to a point not seen since 2011. Among men, support for the court is near a high.

Generally, views of the court by gender have moved together. But in the new poll, the gap is 17 percentage points, the widest it has been in at least two decades.

voice actress mocks Dr. Blasey Ford's voice

Butera, who plays Leia Organa on the Disney Channel’s animated series, posted the video on Twitter in which she mocked Ford’s “baby” voice.

“I don’t know if anybody is listening to the Dr. Blasey Ford testimony about Brett Kavanaugh but this is how I sound. I know it’s a surprise to even me that I talk this way and I’m a doctor and a grown woman,” Butera said imitating Ford. “I sound like I’m still back at that high school party…um…I can’t help it, I just have this kind of voice like a baby, even though I’m a doctor. And I’m on this media circus, political stage, and I have kids myself. I don’t know why I speak with vocal fry, um, but you can listen to my testimony and hear that a grown woman sounds this way. Dr. Blasey Ford, thank you.”

Social media users slammed Butera for the video.

“If Rachel Butera is not fired from ‘Star Wars Resistance’ I’m not watching,” one person tweeted.

“I promise you I will never watch a single show featuring Rachel Butera’s voice. For as long as I live I will remember she made fun of a victim of sexual assault,” a social media user wrote.

early voting in Minnesota spikes up. Absentee ballot requests up 300% over 2014

Early voting in Minnesota shows big spike in first week
Briana Bierschbach September 27, 2018, 2:53 PM
Early voting in Minnesota only started six days ago, but requests for ballots are already way up compared to the last midterm election.

Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon reported Thursday that Minnesotans have requested at least 106,061 no-excuse absentee ballots, nearly three times the number requested during the same time period in 2014.

Already, 11,353 ballots have been accepted by county election officials.

It’s just the latest sign of energized voters this cycle, after turnout in August was the highest for a primary election since 1994.

More than 36,000 of the early ballots for the November election were requested from residents in Hennepin County, the state’s most populous, urban county.

Minnesotans have had the option to vote early by mail or in person since 2014, when lawmakers passed a no-excuse absentee voting law. Previously, voters had to have a reason to cast their ballots before Election day. Early voting started 46 days before the Nov. 6 election.

The 2018 stakes are high for both parties. There’s an open governor’s race, two U.S. Senate seats, four competitive congressional races and four other constitutional offices on the ballot. The election will also decide control of the state Legislature, where all 134 House members are on the ballot.
