Coronavirus economy: In Mountain View, tech gives and takes away
City known for Big Tech has thousands of small businesses, many hurting
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA - SEPTEMBER 14: Jackie Graham, the co-owner of the Sports Page Bar & Grill in Mountain View, Calif., sits inside her bar after a lunch break on Sept. 14, 2020. (Dai Sugano/Bay Area News Group)

Its a warm Friday afternoon at a Mountain View sports pub just a stones throw from several Google offices, and tables inside and out should be filled with people celebrating the end of the workweek. But the long barroom with seating for 80 is closed by coronavirus regulations, and on the outdoor patio despite efforts to draw people in there are just a dozen customers drinking and eating in a space for more than 200.
In this city with an economy heavily dependent on the technology industrys army of daytime workers, thousands of whom are typically bused in by their employers, the shift to remote work is wreaking financial havoc across a broad swath of Mountain View businesses even as the citys biggest employer contributes new revenue and pandemic assistance.
Were surrounded by Google here, and Microsoft is just over there. A lot of small companies as well, says Jackie Graham, who has owned The Sports Page with her husband, Rob, for 28 years. We used to be busy nearly every day because of the surrounding companies.

Now, the Grahams have pulled the net from the sand volleyball court and ringed the expanse with socially distanced picnic tables plucked from the patio, where theyve mounted three giant-screen TVs along the rear fence just to try to bring some people in, Graham says.
The Sports Page has kept its five bartenders but at dramatically reduced hours. Graham estimates revenue has cratered 70% from pre-pandemic times.

'This is not OK': Black Raleigh mom wants answers after she's handcuffed by Raleigh PD in her bathrobe
RALEIGH (WTVD) -- A Raleigh mom wants answers from the Raleigh Police Department after she was detained and handcuffed on the side of the road while she was in her bathrobe. She believes she was targeted because she's black with a luxury car.
The ordeal began around 9:30 on Wednesday night, last week, near Hargett and Pettigrew Streets -- just off New Bern Avenue. In cell phone video from a nearby neighbor, you can see Stacey Campbell in handcuffs in her bathrobe being detained by a Raleigh police officer. Campbell is black. The officer was a white woman.
"I'm embarrassed about what happened to me. I'm very embarrassed," said Campbell who says she was in the neighborhood that night to check on a friend in crisis. During the visit she went to retrieve something from her new Cadillac SUV.
"And once I closed the door to the vehicle a police officer walks up to me and she goes, 'Take your hands out your pockets and put them on top of the hood.' And I'm like, ok, what's going on? What's wrong?"
The officer told Campbell that her car's registration was coming back to another woman with an outstanding warrant. "I said, well that's impossible. I just got this car on April 28. And these are brand new tags."
Campbell said the officer ordered her not to move. "But I had my robe on; it was tied and my hands were up here. And I just moved my waist -- I never took my hands off my vehicle. And she put me in handcuffs."
As drivers and passersby looked on, things took another turn for the 48-year old mother of three. "She searches me. She pats me down and I'm handcuffed. And then she pulls up my entire robe. And I had nothing underneath except a t-shirt and underwear. She exposed the whole lower half of my body.
-----------
Campbell says the ordeal ended when the officer told her she needed to call DMV to get the registration issue figured out. Campbell says she did that the very next morning only to be told there was no issue; her registration was fine. She filed a complaint against the officer this week.

A Michigan residents apparent joke showing disdain for voting by mail is no laughing matter for one election official.
The resident put a toilet on their lawn with a sign that says, Place mail in ballots here.
Barb Byrum, the Democratic clerk of Ingham County, filed a complaint with police over the display, saying it could mislead people who arent familiar with the voting system.
It is a felony to take illegal possession of an absentee ballot, Byrum said Friday.
Elections in this country are to be taken seriously and there are many people who are voting by mail for the first time this election, she said.

The real-time tracker has been rising by tens of thousands of dollars every second since news of Ginsburg's death and the announcement from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell that he would move forward with a vote to replace her as soon as possible.

Republicans blocked a proposal Wednesday by Democrats in the U.S. Senate to fast-track a bill that would grant Venezuelans in the United States Temporary Protected Status, the latest attempt to appeal to Venezuelans in Florida seven weeks before Election Day.
Two Democratic senators, Bob Menendez of New Jersey and Dick Durbin of Illinois, attempted to pass a bill that would have granted TPS to Venezuelans allowing them to live and work legally in the U.S. for a limited time without threat of deportation through a process in the Senate called unanimous consent. The move, which is essentially a voice vote, bypasses usual Senate procedure and provides a speedy way to pass legislation, but it fails if one senator opposes it.
South Dakota Republican Sen. John Thune blocked the bills passage on behalf of Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee.
This is a serious mistake and deadly mistake for these Venezuelans, Durbin said in response to Thunes objection.
