House candidate called himself a combat vet. Records show he wasnt.
By Brian Slodysko, The Associated Press and James LaPorta, The Associated Press
Sep 21, 11:00 A
Campaigning for a northwestern Ohio congressional seat, Republican J.R. Majewski presents himself as an Air Force combat veteran who deployed to Afghanistan after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, once describing tough conditions including a lack of running water that forced him to go more than 40 days without a shower.
Military documents obtained by The Associated Press through a public records request tell a different story.
They indicate Majewski never deployed to Afghanistan but instead completed a six-month stint helping to load planes at an air base in Qatar, a longtime U.S. ally that is a safe distance from the fighting.
Majewskis account of his time in the military is just one aspect of his biography that is suspect. His post-military career has been defined by exaggerations, conspiracy theories, talk of violent action against the U.S. government and occasional financial duress.
Still, thanks to an unflinching allegiance to former President Donald Trump Majewski once painted a massive Trump mural on his lawn he also stands a chance of defeating longtime Democratic Rep. Marcy Kaptur in a district recently redrawn to favor Republicans.

DeSantis' face
I know DU doesn't like face shaming and lookism but finally someone said it.. in comments following article about Youngkin clearly prepping for fun for president based on feigning belief that Trump won.
DeSantis just looks like a total thug
Comment following nyt article:
And Youngkin with his hair and vest is more dangerous than the reptilian-faced Ron DeSantis. At least you'd never turn your back on anyone who looked like DeSantis.

More US Employers Are Trapping Workers in a New Form of Indentured Servitude
Bosses in industries such as retail, health care and logistics are reverting to an old tactic and trapping people in miserable jobs by threatening to saddle them with debt if they quit. Workers across the United States in fields ranging from nursing to trucking have been discouraged from leaving jobs they hate or cant afford to keep because employers vow to charge them for training costs if they quit before an arbitrary deadline.
The threats are backed by so-called Training Repayment Agreement Provisions (TRAPs) in employment contracts. The practice has been likened by critics to indentured servitude and peonage formerly common types of debt bondage in which a borrower was bound to perform labor for a creditor.
TRAPs have recently come under fire from policymakers because of class action litigation against the pet store chain PetSmart, and reporting on the restrictive covenants from a watchdog group called the Student Borrower Protection Center. Earlier this month, the Senate Banking Committee held hearings examining the agreements and other forms of employer-driven debt. In June, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau also launched an investigation of employment arrangements that led to workers owing money to their bosses.
Two workers who are being threatened with thousands of dollars in bills through the enforcement of TRAPs appeared before the banking committee on September 7. BreAnn Scally, the lead plaintiff in the class action against PetSmart, told lawmakers about how she was left owing $5,500 to the company for a dog Grooming Academy that was initially advertised as free. Registered nurse Cassie Pennings testified about being stuck with $7,500, more than six months rent, after leaving one hospital job because she was appalled by staffing ratios during the COVID-19 pandemic and didnt want to be complicit in neglecting patients.

These male politicians are pushing for women who receive abortions to be punished with prison time
A businessman turned state representative from rural Oil City, Louisiana, and a Baptist pastor banded together earlier this year on a radical mission.
They were adamant that a woman who receives an abortion should receive the same criminal consequences as one who drowns her baby.
Under a bill they promoted, pregnant people could face murder charges even if they were raped or doctors determined the procedure was needed to save their own life. Doctors who attempted to help patients conceive through in-vitro fertilization, a fertility treatment used by millions of Americans, could also be locked up for destroying embryos, and certain contraception such as Plan B would be banned.
The taking of a life is murder, and it is illegal, state Rep. Danny McCormick told a committee of state lawmakers who considered the bill in May, right after the Supreme Courts decision to overturn Roe v. Wade was leaked.
No compromises, no more waiting, Brian Gunter, the pastor who suggested McCormick be the one to introduce the legislation, told the committee.
---
An overwhelming majority of Americans said in a Pew Research Center poll they dont believe men should have a greater say on abortion policy, but that is what is happening.

I cant stay silent: Roe reversal powers new generation to sign up and vote
Huge bloc of women expected to turn out in November midterms to protect abortion rights could it alter the election outcome?
Sonya Koenig is scared. A 19-year-old student from Kalamazoo, Michigan, Koenig often stays up until 2am thinking. Sometimes she paces up and down the hall, or speaks to her roommate about nightmare scenarios in which she ends up pregnant and in need of an abortion.
Being in college, I hear stories all the time of women getting drugged at parties, or just walking down the street, and something unfortunate can happen, says Koenig, a freshman at Michigan State University. A guy can walk away, but [these abortion bans] mean the woman has to choose: Do I want to give this baby up or raise this child with no help from anybody? Thats a really hard decision.
In August, a week after her 19th birthday, Koenig signed up to vote. She is one of many women registering in droves since the supreme court overturned the constitutional right to an abortion on 24 June.
My brain is constantly on fire. I cant relax. I just want this election to be over with, says Koenig, who plans to vote to protect abortion rights in a Michigan ballot as well as voting Democrat come November.
_____
In my 28 years of analyzing elections, I had never seen anything like whats happened in the past two months in American politics, Tom Bonier, chief executive of Target Smart, wrote in the New York Times. Women are registering to vote in numbers I never witnessed before. Ive run out of superlatives to describe how different this moment is.
