Japanese architect Tadao Ando has transformed a building that was once home to video game giant Nintendo into a boutique hotel. Due to open on 1 April, Marufukuro Hotel will be located in Kyoto in a building that was occupied by Nintendo between 1933 and 1959, when the company was called Yamauchi Nintendo. At the time, the company was a manufacturer of Japanese playing cards called "hanafuda" and Western-style playing cards called "karuta" and "toranpu".
Located in the Kagiyacho neighbourhood, just north of Kyoto railway station, the building has been unoccupied ever since Nintendo vacated it. Ando has renovated and extended the old structure, converting it into an 18-room hotel including a restaurant, bar, spa and gym. The building's exterior has remained largely unchanged, retaining elements such as old Yamauchi Nintendo entrance plaques and window grilles patterned with details from the old playing cards. Ando's task was to reimagine the building's interior but incorporate many of its original 1930s details, which include decorative tiling and art-deco lighting fixtures.
For the annex, the architect has adopted a more modern approach with floor-to-ceiling windows and elements in raw concrete, the material he is famous for. Photos of the completed Marufukuro Hotel have so far been kept under wraps, but the hotel is already taking bookings and has released some visuals showing layout and furniture details in the guest rooms. Guests can choose to stay in either the old or new parts of the building, in rooms ranging in size between 33 and 79 square metres. The project is backed by property developer Plan Do See.

It’s September 1990 and Pat Martin is a freshman at Freed-Hardeman in Henderson, Tennessee—and he is hungry. The food available around campus hasn’t been cutting it and McDonald’s won’t do; Martin, a true southerner, is after barbecue.
He stumbles into Thomas & Webb, a joint with six tables, a small flickering TV, and a kind man named Mr. Harold, who would eventually become a mentor to Martin. “He asked me if I wanted hot or mild sauce and then literally did not move his feet—just picks up a thick piece of cardboard and there’s a whole hog laying there and he just picks it right off, makes my sandwich, and gives it to me,” Martin reminisces. “It just slapped me in the face, you know? I immediately remember thinking I have got to learn how to do that.”
By the following year, with wisdom from Mr. Harold firmly under his belt, Martin roasted his first hog. It was a team effort between friends featuring a pit built from masonry bricks borrowed from an on-campus construction site and a repurposed road closed sign that doubled as a spatula large enough to flip a whole hog. The success of it left Martin infatuated with whole hog barbecue—enough so that his debut cookbook, Life of Fire, is almost entirely about mastering the art of whole hog cooking 30 years after he first set eyes on a whole-roasted pig.
“I wanted a procedural book that would mentor somebody through this process,” Martin explains. “I did not want to hide from the fact that what we were talking about was very arduous and very hard. This is not a dumbed down book—it’s cooking whole hog pit barbecue.”

Swedish architect Måns Tham has created a house on the outskirts of Stockholm using eight standard shipping containers that are stacked and elevated on metal pillars. The dwelling, appropriately named Container House, was designed by Tham for a couple who wanted to self-build a home from the containers that are typically used to transport goods around the world.
The husband of the couple works for a demolition firm and is a keen mechanic interested in customised American cars. This informed an architectural approach focused on reuse and alteration, which enabled the project to be largely self-built. As there was insufficient space on the steep lot to create a slab, the building is raised above the ground on steel pillars.
The house comprises eight containers with a standard width of 2.4 metres. These units are stacked to create three levels of living spaces for the couple and their three children. Walls between containers were carefully removed to maximise the living spaces while preserving the structural performance of the units.
"A shipping container is actually not a great starting point for a home because of its limited width," explained Tham. "We had to put a lot of effort into deciding which walls to cut and which to save so that we could use the containers with as little additional structure as possible," the architect continued.

Donald Trump has spoken out against Time Warner Cable’s decision to drop One America News, a far-right TV station that routinely praises him. “I believe the people of this Country should protest the decision to eliminate OAN, a very important voice,” the former president said in a statement on Monday. “Demand that OAN be allowed to stay on the air. It is far bigger and more popular than anyone knows, and importantly, it represents the voice of a very large group of people!”
In recent months, multiple cable providers have axed OAN, an outspokenly pro-Trump network that has been accused of promoting right-wing conspiracy theories – including in a $1.6bn lawsuit by two voting machine companies, Smartmatic and Dominion Voting Systems. On Monday, Mr Trump called the channel “very popular and wonderful,” and commanded his supporters to punish cable providers for dropping it.
“Between heavily indebted Time Warner, and Radical Left Comcast, which runs Xfinity, there is a virtual monopoly on news, thereby making what you hear from the LameStream Media largely FAKE, hence the name FAKE NEWS!” the ex-president wrote. In January, DirecTV announced that it will not renew its contract with OAN – a decision that Mr Trump loudly protested as well.
“It is a very popular channel, far more popular than most would understand, and they are being treated horribly by the Radical Left lunatics running the networks,” the former president said of OAN. “Instead of being allowed to grow, their voice is being shuttered. Don’t let it happen, cancel DirecTV. If you feel infringed by what this Communist movement is doing, cancel DirecTV!”

After America’s largest satellite television provider announced it would not renew its contract with far-right media network One America News Network, anchor Dan Ball urged viewers to find hypothetical “dirt” on the chairman of the provider’s parent company.
Last week, DirecTV – majority-owned by US telecoms giant AT&T – said it would not renew its contract with the network when the current one expires, following a “routine internal review.”
In a segment capture by Media Matters that aired on 17 January, Mr Ball said the network is “at war” with AT&T, sharing a graphic with the company’s customer service phone number and a photograph of the company’s chair William Kennard.
“If you’ve got any dirt … I’d love to see it and put it on this program,” Mr Ball said. “You bring me concrete evidence of whatever it may be – cheating on his taxes, cheating on his wife, saying racial slurs towards white people, folks do that – whatever it may be, find it for me, bring it, and we’ll air it.”
