Biden support slips below 30% in new poll

Former Vice President Joe Biden's support in the latest Hill-HarrisX poll of Democratic voters has fallen below 30 percent, his lowest mark in the survey so far.

The poll, released on Monday, found that 29 percent of likely Democratic primary voters support Biden as their first choice for president, while 16 percent back Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).

This marks a 4-point drop for Biden from an identical poll conducted two weeks ago and immediately following the first 2020 Democratic debates. It also represents a 17-point drop from when same poll was first conducted in May, a month after Biden formally launched his campaign bid.

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) retained their spots, with Harris getting 11 percent and Warren trailing close behind at 9 percent.
South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg, who ranked as high as third place at one earlier poll, slipped to sixth place, garnering just 1 percent of support.

Former Texas Congressman Beto O'Rourke, who has been lagging in national polls over the last few months, notched up 2 points to 3 percent. A large number of respondents, 17 percent, were undecided.

The poll can be viewed as another setback for Biden, whose campaign has been grappling with attacks on his civil rights record in recent weeks.

Trump complains of 'fake polls'

Trump complains of 'fake polls' after surveys show him trailing multiple Democratic candidates

President Trump on Monday sought to cast doubt on a spate of recent polls that show him trailing Democratic White House hopefuls.

The president decried what he called "Fake Polls," likening them to surveys during the 2016 election that showed then-Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton leading Trump.

He also accused various news outlets of intentionally getting the projections wrong.
"They will never learn!" he tweeted.

A variety of surveys released in the last five weeks all showed the president losing to a handful of Democratic contenders in hypothetical 2020 match-ups.

An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, released Sunday, showed former Vice President Joe Biden Trump by 9 points among registered voters, 51 to 42 percent. The poll also found Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) with a 7-point lead over the president, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) ahead of Trump by 5 points and Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) with a 1-point advantage.

A Fox News poll released last month showed Biden with a 10-point lead, Sanders with a 9-point lead, Warren with a 2-point lead and Harris and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg with 1-point leads.
And a Washington Post-ABC News poll released in early June

Warren fans say: She's upending expectations

She’s upending expectations’: Warren fans say her appeal is about more than liberal policies

Joanna Berens freely admits that she once doubted if an academic like Elizabeth Warren could win the presidency.
That was before she watched one of the senator’s televised town halls.

“She doesn’t just have some sound bites,” said Berens, a 57-year-old event planner, marveling at what she remembers seeing minutes before she was set to see Warren in person at another town hall in Miami recently. “She’s listening. She’s engaging. She hears what they’re saying, and offers thoughtful comments.”

Now, Berens isn’t just convinced Warren would make a strong general election nominee — she’s thrilled about the prospect of her confronting President Donald Trump on the debate stage.

“Oh my god,” she said. “She will flatten him.”

Warren’s summer-long rise in polls and fundraising success in the Democratic presidential primary is usually attributed to her detailed policy agenda or longstanding appeal to liberal diehards.

But Warren supporters and other friendly Democrats cite another reason for her ascent: Voters who expected to see an awkward policy wonk on the campaign trail are instead impressed by a candidate they describe as authentic and charismatic.
That shift has marked a key development in a primary where many Democratic voters say they are most interested in a candidate who can defeat Trump next fall. And it speaks to Warren’s ability to reach beyond her natural base of progressive activists, connecting with voters who might be more ideologically moderate but nonetheless drawn to her.

Trump under fire for racially-charged tweets against congresswomen

Trump under fire for racially-charged tweets against congresswomen

He claimed the women "originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe", before suggesting they "go back".

He then said Speaker Nancy Pelosi "would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements".

Ms Omar told the president that he was "stoking white nationalism because you are angry that people like us are serving in Congress and fighting against your hate-filled agenda".

She also called him "the worst, most corrupt and inept president we have ever seen".
And Ms Pressley shared a screenshot of Mr Trump's tweet, adding: "THIS is what racism looks like. WE are what democracy looks like."

Democrats running for the presidential nomination also condemned Mr Trump. Senator Elizabeth Warren said the "vile comment" was a "racist and xenophobic attack". Beto O'Rourke said : "This is racist. These congresswomen are every bit as American as you."
Bernie Sanders also accused Mr Trump of racism.

Trump Blasted Over Racist Tweets Targeting Congresswomen of Color

Trump Blasted Over Racist Tweets Targeting Congresswomen of Color While ‘Fox & Friends’ Laughs: ‘Very Comedic’

Moments after President Trump took to Twitter to tell Democratic congresswomen of color to “go back” to where “they came” from, the hosts of his favorite cable news morning program laughed while reading the president’s racist comments, calling them “very comedic” before claiming Trump was “making an important point.”

Other journalists and politicians, however, slammed the president for essentially telling a black woman to go back to Africa.
[snip]

“When I call the president a racist, this is what I’m talking about,” Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders said. “We must stand together for justice and dignity towards all.”

Trump Is a Racist. If You Still Support Him, So Are You.

The president is a racist, in his words and his actions: by Goldie Taylor

Before you go clutching your pearls and extolling the virtues of “civility,” let me say this: Put a sock in it.

This is not a new revelation, nor is it something that we can continue to ignore as though it were coming from a drunk uncle at the family barbecue. Bigotry is dangerous and, in the hands of our nation’s commander in chief, it can mean an inability to recognize individual humanity and a failure to act with moral authority in times of crisis. Every person talking about his clothes as he cheerfully bares his ass is part of the problem.

On Sunday, he claimed that newly elected progressive Democrats “originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe” and “the worst, more corrupt and inept anywhere in the world.” And he told freshmen Reps. Ayanna Pressley, Rashida Tlaib, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar—outspoken Democratic women of color who have challenged the administration’s inhumane immigration policies—to leave the country.

Three of the four were born here in the United States. All are American citizens, and duly elected members of Congress.
Trump’s repugnant rebuke of American values did not come out of thin air. It unfolded days after “The Squad” travelled with a delegation of congressional democrats to tour detention facilities in border states. What they found was deplorable. Reports of rampant abuse and neglect filled the airwaves, leading Trump to again dismiss accurate coverage as “fake news.” Rather than focus on improving basic conditions and getting to work on bi-partisan, comprehensive reforms, the president basically said if immigrants didn’t like how they were being treated, they should stay in their own country.

Leading Democrats rebuke Trump's racist tweets

Trump's 'go back' tweets draw swift rebuke from Democrats on the left and center

In the initial series of tweets, Trump took aim at unnamed "'Progressive' Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe" and called on them to "go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came."

The tweets were seen as aimed at Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), and came amid escalating tensions between the four and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). All four freshmen are American citizens, and all but Omar were born in the United States.
All four responded on Twitter, with Ocasio-Cortez saying, "Mr. President, the country I 'come from,' & the country we all swear to, is the United States. But given how you've destroyed our border with inhumane camps, all at a benefit to you & the corps who profit off them, you are absolutely right about the corruption laid at your feet."

The rebuke was also swift from the representatives' fellow Democrats on social media and on the Sunday talk shows. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), a key ally of the four, tweeted, "When I call the president a racist, this is what I'm talking about."

Sanders' fellow presidential candidate, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D-N.Y.) told CNN's Jake Tapper "He said he would 'Make America Great Again,' what he's trying to do is make America hate again."

Pelosi also condemned the tweets, saying, "When @realDonaldTrump tells four American Congresswomen to go back to their countries, he reaffirms his plan to 'Make America Great Again' has always been about making America white again. Our diversity is our strength and our unity is our power."

Assistant House Speaker Ben Ray Lujan (D-N.M.), the highest-ranking Latino in the House, was first informed of the tweet by Fox News' Chris Wallace on "Fox News Sunday" and immediately condemned it as a "racist tweet."

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), the number-two Democrat in the Senate, defended Omar specifically on CBS' "Face the Nation," speculating that she was the primary intended target of the tweets.

AOC, Pressley, Tlaib, Omar tell Trump: 'We Don't Fear You'

AOC, Pressley, Tlaib, Omar Hit Back At Trump’s Racist Tirade: ‘We Don’t Fear You’

Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Ilhan Omar (D-MN) didn’t take President Donald Trump’s racist attacks lying down on Sunday.

Trump’s screed about “‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen” who should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came” didn’t mention the congresswomen by name, but those four House Democrats, all but one of whom were born in the U.S but who all happen to be women of color, have been making headlines recently while butting heads with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
In a scathing Twitter thread, Ocasio-Cortez ripped Trump for how he’s “destroyed our border with inhumane camps, all at a benefit to you & the corps who profit off them.”

“You are angry because you can’t conceive of an America that includes us,” the New York Democrat wrote. “You rely on a frightened America for your plunder.”

“On top of not accepting an America that elected us, you cannot accept that we don’t fear you, either,” Ocasio-Cortez continued. “You can’t accept that we will call your bluff & offer a positive vision for this country. And that’s what makes you seethe.”

Congresswomen respond to Trump's 'racist' tweets

Congresswomen respond to Trump's 'racist' tweets telling them to go back to where they came from

By Sunday afternoon, Ocasio-Cortez and Omar responded to Trump's tweets directly, reminding him that they are U.S. citizens.

"Mr. President, the country I 'come from,' & the country we all swear to, is the United States. But given how you’ve destroyed our border with inhumane camps, all at a benefit to you & the corps who profit off them, you are absolutely right about the corruption laid at your feet,' Ocasio-Cortez wrote.

"You are angry because you don’t believe in an America where I represent New York 14, where the good people of Minnesota elected @IlhanMN, where @RashidaTlaib fights for Michigan families, where @AyannaPressley champions little girls in Boston.

"You are angry because you can’t conceive of an America that includes us. You rely on a frightened America for your plunder....
