More than 80% of hospitalized COVID-19 patients in Georgia last month were black, CDC study finds
Source: CBS News
A CDC study released Wednesday found that over 80% of the COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Georgia last month were black. It's the latest analysis showing that communities of color are being hit disproportionately hard by the coronavirus.
The study comes just days after Georgia Governor Brian Kemp started reopening some of the state's businesses a move condemned as premature and dangerous by local black leaders as well as public health officials and even President Trump.
The study from the CDC, which is headquartered in Atlanta, surveyed eight hospitals in the state seven in the Atlanta metro area and one southern Georgia. In the sample of 305 COVID-19 patients who were hospitalized in March, 247 or 83.2% were black. By comparison, 32 patients (10.8%) were white, 10 (3.4%) were Hispanic and eight (2.7%) were Asian or Pacific Islander.

Kemp's strategy is starting to make sense.
Also, if i was the paranoid sort, I might be persuaded that all of this, ALL of this was by design.....
El Salvador authorises 'lethal force' in gang crime crackdown after dozens of murders
Source: Sky News
The president of El Salvador has authorised "lethal force" in the fight against criminal gangs.
The country has also enforced the opposite of social distancing in its jails, packing opposing gang members into the same cell.
Forcing rival gangs to share the same space is intended to break communication between members of the same group.
Mr Bukele said police and the armed forces can use "lethal force" to defend themselves or the "lives of Salvadorans".

See pictures in the link. This is horrifying. The President isn't just authorizing lethal force.... he is mandating the exact opposite of social distancing for prisoners. In other words, he is sanctioning murder.
Restrictions could be lifted on up to 100,000 Minnesota workers by Monday
Source: Star Tribune
An estimated 80,000 to 100,000 employees could return to work Monday under a plan by Gov. Tim Walz to dial back the states stay-at-home order, which was imposed to reduce or delay the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The move is tailored to manufacturers and offices that dont have face-to-face interaction with clients and werent deemed critical industries that were exempt from the stay-at-home order.
Roughly 20,000 companies in this category now have the option to reopen if they complete and publicize plans to maintain social distancing, worker hygiene and workspace cleanliness, said Steve Grove, commissioner for the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development.
This is a limited first step in the process of safely reopening some businesses and returning Minnesotans to work, he said.

Sweden: 600,000 Coronavirus Infections In Stockholm By May 1, Model Estimates
Source: Forbes
The Swedish Public Health Agency has collaborated on a new study that estimates one-third of all Stockholm residents will have been infected with COVID-19 by May 1. That amounts to approximately 600,000 people in Swedens capital city. Swedens official figures report only 15,322 positive cases so far in the whole of the country, suggesting significant numbers of invisible infections.
The astonishing numbers are in stark contrast to the latest World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that no more than two to three percent of the worlds population have been infected.
Swedens acting state epidemiologist Anders Wallenstein confirmed the findings during the latest daily press conference about the virus outbreak. It was also revealed that a further 185 coronavirus-related deaths have occurred in Sweden in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 1,765.
The study indicates that for every confirmed case of COVID-19, a further 999 people are likely to have been infected with the virus without knowing it. The study used a model that includes the number of positive COVID-19 cases in Stockholm from February 17 to April 10, along with samples taken from infected people in the period March 27 to April 3.

Supreme Court rules non-unanimous jury verdicts unconstitutional
Source: The Hill
The Supreme Court on Monday ruled that defendants in criminal trials can only be convicted by a unanimous jury, striking down a scheme that has been rejected by every state except one.
The court said in a divided opinion that the Constitution requires agreement among all members of a jury in order to impose a guilty verdict.
"Wherever we might look to determine what the term 'trial by an impartial jury trial' meant at the time of the Sixth Amendments adoptionwhether its the common law, state practices in the founding era, or opinions and treatises written soon afterwardthe answer is unmistakable," Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote in an opinion. "A jury must reach a unanimous verdict in order to convict."

Sweden Says Controversial Covid-19 Strategy Is Proving Effective
Source: Bloomberg
Swedens unusual approach to fighting the coronavirus pandemic is starting to yield results, according to the countrys top epidemiologist.
Anders Tegnell, the architect behind Swedens relatively relaxed response to Covid-19, told local media the latest figures on infection rates and fatalities indicate the situation is starting to stabilize.
Were on a sort of plateau, Tegnell told Swedish news agency TT.
Sweden has left its schools, gyms, cafes, bars and restaurants open throughout the spread of the pandemic. Instead, the government has urged citizens to act responsibly and follow social distancing guidelines.

No football this year: Zeke Emanuel
Many local sports fans are still trying to come to terms with the fact that the Philadelphia Phillies havent played a single game, thanks to the coronavirus.
But the coronavirus couldnt possibly affect the Eagles season, right? After all, its only April. And the Eagles dont start playing real football for several months. But a leading doctor at the University of Pennsylvania says that if youre planning on sitting inside the Linc and cheering the Eagles on (or, well, perhaps booing them off the field) in the fall, you better make other plans.
The last kind of element to come back once the economy starts slowly reopening will be large gatherings of thousands of people where physical distancing is impossible, Emanuel tells Philly Mag. This includes any kind of large gatherings. Conferences. Religious services where people are in large groups especially megachurches. Concerts. And, yes, major sporting events.

New York City auctioned off extra ventilators due to cost of maintenance: report
Source: The Hill
New York City auctioned off hundreds of city-owned ventilators at least five years ago under Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasios administration, according to an investigation by ProPublica.
The city acquired the ventilators in 2006 under former Mayor Michael Bloombergs administration, when a new strain of the flu was circulating in Asia, according to a report from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene obtained by the news outlet.
The city began acquiring ventilators and stockpil[ing] a supply of face masks, which were later auctioned off because the machines broke down and the health department "couldn't afford to maintain them," according to ProPublica.
The 14-year-old report obtained by ProPublica shows the city was keenly aware of the consequences of a potential pandemic, almost predicting the exact scenario that played out this year, according to the investigative outlet.
