Military spouses across the US organize and march in support of Black Lives Matter
"I was screaming at the television," an African American Navy spouse told CNN, as she watched peaceful protesters running from military police and law enforcement officers who were advancing on them near the White House. Protestors were covering their ears with their hands and gripping their mouths as they tried to escape the acrid clouds of smoke and wafting pepper spray.

CNN Home Front interviewed 11 military spouses married to service members in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard.
They are black, white and Hispanic men and women, spouses of both enlisted service members and the officer corps, some of them veterans themselves, many with biracial children, speaking on the condition of anonymity to protect their spouses' careers and the personal safety of their families.
The spouses uniformly condemned the use of military force within the United States and described being stunned -- and horrified -- by the images from Lafayette Square.

Did you know that black is not really a color or white either...
-
Why Do We Not List Black and White as Colors in Physics?
Visible light, radio waves, x-rays and other types of radiation are all part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Visible light is electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths ranging from roughly 400 and 700 nanometers. In physics, a color is visible light with a specific wavelength. Black and white are not colors because they do not have specific wavelengths. Instead, white light contains all wavelengths of visible light. Black, on the other hand, is the absence of visible light.
Definitions of Black and White
The correspondence of a color to a specific wavelength is called spectral color. White and black are excluded from this definition because they do not have specific wavelengths. White is not defined as a color because it is the sum of all possible colors. Black is not defined as a color because it is the absence of light, and therefore color. In the visual art world, white and black may sometimes be defined as distinct colors. This is different from the concept of spectral color in physics.

What Does It Mean to Be a "Good Cop"?

What Does It Mean to Be a Good Cop?
On May 30, Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson put down his weapon and walked with protesters in Flint, Michigan, vowing that the police love them. The next day, Houston police Chief Art Acevedo removed his mask and appeared to be on the verge of crying as he offered a police escort to the funeral home for the body of George Floyd. The Houston Police Department also updated its profile picture on social media to display Floyds image. Louisiana Sheriff Sid Gautreaux issued a press release after Floyds death saying that he was sickened and heartbroken to see such callous disregard for another human being. NYPD officers were filmed kneeling with community leaders to show their support for protests. Some National Guardsmen even danced the Macarena with protesters in Atlanta.
These images of police officials spread on social media as an antidote to the many videos of officers in body armor shooting rubber bullets, launching gas grenades, spewing pepper spray, and swinging batons at protesters and journalists. Soon after, a flood of statements flowed from liberal politicians and establishment leaders praising these officers. They called for better police community relations, more training for all cops to learn how to be like these good cops, and peaceful protests that dont threaten white-owned property.
As a white, male civil rights lawyer working with local communities to combat mass incarceration, I have studied police practices from a position of safety and privilege for 11 years. I have seen virtually the same cycle in every major city: police militarization, surveillance, incarceration, and unconstitutional abuses leading to a particularly high profile crime by police caught on video. Politicians respond to the fallout by pledging more recruitment and training of good cops, better community policing practices, and rewritten use of force policies. These pledges are then followed by increases in police budgets after the unrest subsides. The police bureaucracy keeps expanding, and police keep killing Black people.

COVID-19 Peak Dates for Every State

COVID-19 Peak Dates for Every State
[snip]
As the peak has likely passed in most parts of the country, states have begun to allow businesses like restaurants, retailers, and more to reopen. Leaders must weigh the risks of reopening too soon with the harsh economic reality in the wake of the pandemic. Efforts to contain the virus have decimated the economies of every state, and extending closures will continue to adversely affect businesses and workers. Nearly 40 million Americans have lost their jobs since the outbreak began, and in some states unemployment claims since mid-March have amounted to over 40% of the workforce (as measured before the pandemic). These are each states unemployment claims since coronavirus shut down the economy.

Teen shares mom's list of rules to stay safe 'as a young black man'
Over his 18 years, Cameron Welch picked up many lessons from his mom about how to stay safe. The Houston teen's TikTok featuring the unwritten rules my mom makes me follow as a young black man recently went viral, with more than 10 million views. It highlights the extra measures black people take to stay safe, which include:
Dont put your hands in your pockets.
Dont put your hoodie on.
Dont be outside with no shirt on.
Check in with your people, it dont matter even if youre down the street.
Dont be out too late.
Dont touch anything youre not buying.
Never leave the store without a receipt or bag, even if its just a pack of gum.
Never make it look like theres an altercation between you and someone else.
Never leave the house without your ID.
Dont drive with a wife beater on.
Dont drive with a du rag on.
Dont go out in public with neither.
Dont ride with the music too loud.
Dont stare at a Caucasian woman.
If a cop stops you randomly and starts questioning, dont talk back, just compromise.
If you ever get pulled over hands on the dash board and ask if you can get out your license and registration out.

These cities have begun defunding police in the wake of George Floyd protests
As the final of three memorial services for George Floyd began Monday in his hometown of Houston, protests that happen in his name are continuing across the country, with the Black Lives Matter movement now advocating to #AbolishPolice.
The Democratic-led House of Representatives on Monday is expected to unveil new legislation aimed at defunding police departments across the country.
Though, a recent poll conducted by YouGov found despite calls by activists and protesters to defund police departments, most Americans do not support reducing law enforcement budgets. Just 16 percent of Democrats and 15 percent of Republicans said they were in favor of the idea.
