A detention deputy for the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has resigned amid an investigation into allegations he sold THC oil vape pens and edibles to inmates in the county jail.
Deputy Marlon Blankenship resigned during an ongoing investigation that could result in criminal charges, the sheriff’s office confirmed this week. A spokesperson said other details would be provided through a records request submitted by the Tampa Bay Times.
The records had not been released by Thursday but two search warrant affidavits released by the Clerk of Court’s office this week include details about how the investigation started and some of the evidence already gathered.

The family of a Black man who was killed by a police officer in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, in 2015 reached a $2 million settlement with the city on Feb. 23.
Corey Jones reportedly was killed on an interstate exit ramp by the officer after his SUV broke down.
Palm Beach Gardens police officer Nouman Raja shot and killed 31-year-old Jones at approximately 3:15 a.m. on Oct. 18, 2015, after seeing his SUV stalled on the exit ramp on an I-95 exit ramp and PGA Boulevard. The housing inspector and church drummer was on his way home from playing a gig with his reggae band.
Jones carried a handgun and was authorized to carry a concealed weapon. He bought the firearm to protect his drum set worth $10,000, which he had in his vehicle when he was approached by Raja.
Raja worked for the city’s auto burglary investigation team and wore plain clothes but was told to wear his police vest if he ever approached a civilian, which in this instance he reportedly didn’t do. Raja was wearing a baseball hat, jeans and a T-shirt when he approached Jones by driving an unmarked van up the exit ramp in the wrong direction.

A Florida man who was paralyzed when a police officer shot him after mistaking his handgun for his stun gun filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against the city of Hollywood, the officer and others, saying: “My life got destroyed.”
Michael Ortiz is seeking unspecified millions of dollars from Hollywood, Florida, and Henry Andrews, 50, the officer who also faces a misdemeanor charge for the 2021 shooting, one of several over the last 20 years in which officers have said they mistook their gun for their Taser. The federal civil rights lawsuit also names officers Dionte Roots and Jhonny Jimenez, who were subduing Ortiz when Andrews shot him.
Ortiz told reporters not only had his life been destroyed but so has his mother’s as she has to change his diapers and provide other care.
He called 911 for help while suffering from a mental health crisis but was shot while handcuffed on the ground.

A former Normal police officer reached a settlement agreement in a federal lawsuit filed by a woman who alleged he stole $12,000 from her home.
Other defendants — former Normal Police Chief Rick Bleichner and two officers — were dismissed from the case in January. Plaintiff Lindsey Holzhauer alleged that they conspired to prevent her from reporting the theft and caused her emotional distress with their handling of the situation, which coincided with her husband's death.
Holzhauer said former Normal police officer Brian R. Williams took the money from her home after she had called first responders there on Nov. 25, 2019, for a medical emergency involving her husband, who later died. She believed he had left the $12,000 on a counter to be used for his funeral expenses, according to court documents.
Holzhauer reported the missing money to Normal police, and a family member later reported it to Illinois State Police. She received an anonymous call from someone who promised to return the money if she dropped the investigation. Williams was arrested Nov. 29, 2019, in a subsequent sting operation after he gave her $13,000 in a plastic bag at a Pontiac gas station, according to court documents.

A former Pierce County sheriff’s sergeant has been sentenced for choking his girlfriend and threatening her with a machete.
Robert Carpenter, 52, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Pierce County Superior Court to second-degree domestic violence assault, The News Tribune reported.
Judge TaTeasha Monique Davis sentenced him to six months in jail, which is at the low end of a standard sentencing range.
Early on Nov. 14, Carpenter returned to his Puyallup home drunk, slapped his girlfriend awake and over two hours, choked her several times, held a machete near her throat and threatened to kill her and her children, according to court documents.
He eventually surrendered to a SWAT team at his home and has been in custody since then. The woman told law enforcement she thought she would die during the attack, documents said.
Less than a month before, Carpenter had been sentenced to time served after pleading guilty to felony harassment in a 2018 stabbing in Tacoma. He was subsequently fired from the sheriff’s department after working there for 25 years.

A Puyallup police officer has been arrested for rape for an alleged off-duty incident that occurred in October.
The 32-year-old officer was fired from the department on March 2 when he was arrested. He was hired by the department on Aug. 8, 2022, according to the Puyallup Police Department.
According to the Puyallup Police Department, the officer was still in training and had never worked alone as a police officer.
The officer was arrested by the Pierce County Sheriff's Department for third-degree rape.
