Law enforcement officials expecting dozens of charges against US Capitol rioters

Law enforcement officials expecting dozens of charges against US Capitol rioters

From CNN's Evan Perez

Following Wednesday’s embarrassing federal response to Pro-Trump rioters ransacking of the Capitol, the FBI and other federal law enforcement agencies are planning a push to make arrests and bring charges against those who led the insurrection, federal law enforcement officials said.

Dozens of charges are expected in Washington DC’s local and federal courts, including as many as 15 federal cases against people who are believed to be involved in the more serious alleged crimes, the officials said Thursday.

FBI digital experts spent the night ingesting surveillance video from the Capitol buildings and the area around the complex and are using software to match images and faces with social media posts showing some of the mayhem. In some cases, people involved in storming the Capitol made social media postings ahead of the rally making clear what their plans were, which federal prosecutors can use to help bring charges.

Acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen and other federal officials are coordinating the response but are also facing questions about why law enforcement appeared unprepared for the onslaught that in many ways had already been telegraphed by President Trump and his supporters on social media.

Facebook Forced Its Employees To Stop Discussing Trump's Coup Attempt

Posted on January 6, 2021, at 8:45 p.m. ET

Facebook employees were appalled by President Donald Trump’s encouragement of his supporters as they stormed the US Capitol building on Wednesday to prevent the ratification of a free and fair election.

The employees were scared and frustrated, and some came to the realization that the platform they had helped build and operate had contributed to the wave of fear, disinformation, and chaos that flooded Congress. So they spoke out on an internal message board, and some called for Trump’s removal from the platform.

In less than an hour, Facebook moved to silence them. Without any apparent explanation, administrators froze comments on at least three threads in which employees had discussed removing Trump from the site.

“Donald Trump has directly incited a terror attack on Capitol Hill,” one Facebook employee wrote on a post where comments were later halted. “We need to take down his account right now. This is not a moment for half measures.”

"Our employees are actively discussing today's horrible events internally,” Facebook spokesperson Liz Bourgeois said in a statement to BuzzFeed News. She did not answer questions about why the company had temporarily paused discussion on some threads.

George Will: 'Repulsive' Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley 'must be forevermore shunned'

Raw Story

Brad Reed

Conservative Washington Post columnist George Will on Thursday leveled an unsparing attack on President Donald Trump and his two biggest enablers in the United States Senate.

In his latest column, Will said that Trump, along with "repulsive" Sens. Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) "must be forevermore shunned" for their roles in fomenting this week's pro-Trump mob that attacked the Capitol building.

"Hawley announced his intention to object to the certification of some states' electoral votes, for no better reason than that there has been an avalanche of 'allegations' of election irregularities, allegations fomented by the loser of the election," Will wrote. "And Cruz, by organizing support for Hawley among other Republican senators and senators-elect gave Hawley's grotesque self-promotion an ersatz cloak of larger purpose."

Will notes that while Trump will be out of the White House in less than two weeks, Cruz and Hawley will remain in the Senate for the foreseeable future, which leads him to recommended that they be branded with "a scarlet 'S' as a seditionist."

Rudy Giuliani, Who Begged for 'Trial by Combat' for Trump, Shamlessly Condemns DC Violence He Helped

The president’s chief enabler Rudy Giuliani tweeted a lukewarm condemnation of Wednesday’s shocking violence and breach of security at the Capitol—which he had called for earlier that day. “The violence at the Capitol was shameful,” Trump’s lawyer posted Thursday morning before veering off on a tangent about Black Lives Matter protests over the summer. “It was as criminal as the rioting and looting this summer which was not condemned strongly enough by the Left,” he wrote. “This violence is condemned in the strongest terms. Our movement values respect for law and order and for the Police.”

Hours before hordes of Trump supporters—many dressed in hide skins and carrying Confederate flags—Giuliani stood on the president’s Save America rally stage in front of the Capitol and called for the very violence that unfolded. “If we’re wrong, we will be made fools of,” Giuliani said, omitting the fact that the courts have unanimously ruled that indeed Trump’s claims of voter fraud are wrong. “But if we’re right, a lot of them will go to jail. So let’s have trial by combat.”

Joe Scarborough Drops F-Bomb In Fiery On-Air Takedown Of Donald Trump, Capitol Police

Joe Scarborough Drops F-Bomb In Fiery On-Air Takedown Of Donald Trump, Capitol Police

Huffington Post

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough barely concealed his rage Thursday during his blistering rebuke of pro-Trump rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol.

The “Morning Joe” co-host dropped the F-bomb live on air as he slammed President Donald Trump’s incitement of the violence and the soft response from U.S. Capitol Police.

Scarborough also demanded the immediate arrest of the president, his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani and his son Donald Trump Jr. for insurrection against the United States ― citing their outrageous rhetoric that stirred rioters.

“So I wanna know from the Capitol Hill police, what is it? Is it just white people? Or is it Donald Trump supporters? Why do you scream at people for walking across the street, three blocks away from the Capitol? Why are you not as badasses around the Capitol, but then Trump supporters come in and you open the fucking doors for them, you open the doors for them and let them breach the people’s house?” asked the indignant anchor.

“What is wrong with you? I also wanna know. Are we a nation of laws? Are we a nation of one man? Donald J. Trump called for the insurrection against the United States of America,” he continued.

Scarborough laid the same charge against Giuliani and Trump Jr.

“That’s insurrection against the United States of America. and if Donald Trump Jr., Rudy Giuliani and Donald Trump are not arrested today for insurrection and taken to jail and booked, and if the Capitol Hill Police do not go through every video, and look at the face of every person that invaded our Capitol, and if they are not arrested and brought to justice today, then we are no longer a nation of laws and we only tell people they can do this again,” he declared.

A day after the Capitol riot, Trump's schedule includes giving the Medal of Freedom to golfers

From CNN's Betsy Klein

President Trump on Thursday will return his focus to the trappings of office on Thursday, one day after a mob of his supporters breached the US Capitol and the 2020 presidential election has been certified for Joe Biden.

He is expected to award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to golfers Annika Sorenstam and Gary Player, as well as Olympic athlete Babe Zaharias, a White House official told CNN.

With 13 days left in office, the White House has been inundated with requests for the Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Thursday’s presentation was not listed on Trump’s public schedule, which instead said Trump would have “many meetings” and “many calls.”

Earlier this week, Trump bestowed the Medal of Freedom upon Rep. Devin Nunes, and is expected to honor Rep. Jim Jordan. Trump is also considering granting the Medal of Freedom to Bobby Bowden, the retired Florida State University football coach.

House representative: I haven't felt like this "since I was a ranger in Iraq and Afghanistan"

CNN
Aditi Sangal

As rioters breached the US Capitol, House Rep. Jason Crow said there was a 15- to 20-minute period “where we were surrounded and had no way out.”

In the moment, he said he reverted to ranger mode and ensured the doors were locked, moved other lawmakers away from the door and “directed the other members to remove their pins so they weren't identifiable in case the mob did break through.”

He was also ready to fight.

“I had a pen in my pocket that I could use as a weapon, I was looking for other weapons as well. And then I was coordinating with the Capitol police to try to find a way out to for us.”

White House press office was unaware of Trump's overnight statement promising "orderly transition"

From CNN's Jeremy Diamond

President Trump's statement overnight acknowledging that there will be an "orderly transition" was released on Twitter by the President's aide Dan Scavino without the knowledge of the White House press office, a White House official said.

Nearly six hours after Scavino posted the statement on Twitter, the White House has yet to release the statement on official White House letterhead. It has so far only been posted on Scavino's personal Twitter page.

White House press officials woke up Thursday morning to find out about the statement via the news, just like everyone else, the official said.

It remains unclear whether the White House will release the statement via official channels.

Twitter says Trump has deleted tweets needed to unlock account — but unclear when he'll be able to tweet again

From CNN’s Brian Fung

President Trump has removed the three tweets from his profile that prompted a temporary lock of his account on Wednesday, a Twitter spokesperson told CNN. The move clears the way for Trump to regain control of his tweeting privileges as early as today.

The official confirmation comes after Trump appeared to comply Wednesday evening with Twitter’s requirement that he delete the tweets or face a continued lock on his account.

Earlier on Wednesday, Twitter said Trump’s account would be placed in a temporary time out for policy violations, lasting for 12 hours from the moment he deleted the tweets. Twitter also threatened Trump with a permanent ban from the platform for further violations. No sitting president has ever been banned from Twitter.

Asked what time Trump will be able to tweet again, Twitter declined to comment.
