After school shooting, Tennessee governor signs bill to shield gun firms further against lawsuits

Source: AP News

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has signed off on additional protections for gun and ammunition dealers, manufacturers and sellers against lawsuits within a bill that lawmakers passed after a deadly school shooting in March.

The Republican governor quietly signed the legislation Thursday. Its provisions kick in on July 1.

The state Senate gave final passage to the bill in mid-April, just weeks after the March 27 shooting at The Covenant School in Nashville that killed six people, including three 9-year-olds. The House had passed it before the shooting.

Lee’s choice to sign the bill comes as he keeps pushing for the same Republican lawmakers, who hold supermajorities in the House and Senate, to pass a proposal that aims to keep guns away from people who could harm themselves or others. Lee plans to call lawmakers back into an August special session that aims “to strengthen public safety and preserve constitutional rights” after they adjourned last month without taking up his “temporary mental health order of protection” proposal. His office hasn’t released the parameters of what version of that proposal, or others, will be considered in the session yet.

Man gets 14 years in 1/6 case, longest sentence imposed yet

Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Kentucky man with a long criminal record was sentenced Friday to a record-setting 14 years in prison for attacking police officers with pepper spray and a chair as he stormed the U.S. Capitol with his wife. Peter Schwartz’s prison sentence is the longest so far among hundreds of Capitol riot cases. The judge who sentenced Schwartz also handed down the previous longest sentence — 10 years — to a retired New York Police Department officer who assaulted a police officer outside the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Prosecutors had recommended a prison sentence of 24 years and 6 months for Schwartz, a welder. U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta sentenced Schwartz to 14 years and two months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Mehta said Schwartz was a “soldier against democracy” who participated in “the kind of mayhem, chaos that had never been seen in the country’s history.”

“You are not a political prisoner,” the judge told hm. “You’re not somebody who is standing up against injustice or fighting against an autocratic regime.”

Schwartz briefly addressed the judge before learning his sentence, saying, “I do sincerely regret the damage that Jan. 6 has caused to so many people and their lives.”

8 Most Populous Mammals on Earth

According to World Atlas

The Earth has countless species of animals in all shapes and sizes, from tiny ants to giant whales. The diversity of species is wondrous, and scientists have estimated that there may be as many as 8.7 million species of plants and animals on Earth. Of these, roughly 1.2 million have been discovered and documented, with the rest remaining uncataloged - at least for now. According to this logic, as much as 86% of all land creatures and 91% of marine species are yet to be discovered.

Of these many creatures, scientists have identified more than 5,400 mammal species on Earth. Unfortunately, approximately one-fifth of these mammals are considered to be threatened or endangered. Of the roughly 400 mammal species in the United States, a quarter is endangered due to climate change, habitat loss, pollution, or sickness. The above fact, combined with the fact that humans have long since been raising, protecting, and cultivating livestock, means that most of the largest mammal populations on Earth are domesticated animals or common livestock species.

1. Humans - 8 Billion
2. Rats - 7 billion
3. Sheep - 1.18 Billion
4. Cows - 1 Billion
5. Goats - 1 Billion
6. Dogs - 900 Million
7. Pigs - 784 million
8. Cats - 700 million
______

I find it hard to believe that mice did not make the top 8. And how does one count rats?

Exclusive: Biden would veto legislation to block solar tariff waivers

Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON, April 24 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden will veto congressional efforts to overturn his solar tariff waiver for four Southeast Asian nations for two years, the White House said on Monday.

In June, Biden waived tariffs on solar panels from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam in an effort to create a "bridge" while U.S. manufacturing ramps up enough to supply the domestic projects needed to achieve climate change goals.

Today, those four countries make up about 80% of U.S. panel supplies.

Domestic manufacturers, however, say the tariffs are needed now to compete with cheap panels made overseas. The repeal effort aims to support those companies.

Sununu: Trump is positioning himself to be a 'four-time loser' in 2024

It is so refreshing to see opposition to this arrogant racist jerk coming from within his own party. Pity they did not start sooner.

“Republicans want someone who can win in November of ‘24. Donald Trump is a loser. He has not just lost once. He lost us … our House seats in 2018,” Sununu said. “He lost everything and ‘20. We should have 54 U.S. senators right now and we don’t because of his message. So, Donald Trump is positioning himself to be a four-time loser in 2024.”

Ethan Crumbley's parents should stand trial for involuntary manslaughter, appellate court says

Source: CNN

The parents of the Oxford High School shooter will stand trial on four counts of involuntary manslaughter for the four deaths their son Ethan Crumbley caused in a November 2021 school shooting in what may be a precedent-setting case, the Michigan Court of Appeals has ruled.

The parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, have argued the charges have no legal justification and that they should not be held responsible for their son’s killings.

In a written opinion filed Thursday, a panel of judges for the state's appellate court acknowledged the possible precedent-setting nature of this case – holding parents accountable for a child’s crimes – but called the situation unique and unusual.

"We share defendants' concern about the potential for this decision to be applied in the future to parents whose situation viz-a-viz their child's intentional conduct is not as closely tied together, and/or the warning signs and evidence were not as substantial as they are here," wrote the panel.
