Lachlan Murdoch 'doubling down' on right-wing strategy with Tony Abbott's nomination to Fox board

The endorsement of former Australian prime minister Tony Abbott for a position on Fox Corporations board by Lachlan Murdoch shows he is doubling down on the companys right-wing crusading, critics say.
Murdoch welcomed the nomination in one of his first moves since being announced as sole chair of both Fox and News Corp this week following the retirement of his father, Rupert Murdoch, at the age of 92.
The nomination will be considered by shareholders at the media giants annual meeting in November, a media statement released on Friday (Saturday AEST) confirmed. Nominated alongside Abbott was technology executive Peggy Johnson.
Politics professor Chris Wallace, from the University of Canberra, said it shows Lachlan doubling down on News [Corps] right-wing crusading when the costly lessons of recent and ongoing litigation suggest thats not smart.
This confirms fears that decisions under the Lachlan Murdoch-helmed News Corp will be at least as noxiously right-wing as under Rupert - and possibly worse. For shareholders its a worry, she said.

Trump's latest legal gambit could cause 'cascade' of trial delays, New York warns

NEW YORK Donald Trumps trial calendar is a delicate balancing act, one that could be upended by the possible delay of the first in a long string of Trump trials scheduled to begin early next month, the New York attorney generals office argued in a court filing.
The attorney generals office wrote that any delay in its upcoming civil fraud trial against Trump, which is set to begin Oct. 2, is likely to create a cascade of delays in not only this case but also other litigations involving petitioner Donald J. Trump. Attorney General Tish James is suing Trump, his company, his adult sons and some of his business associates for allegedly inflating his net worth in an effort to fraudulently obtain favorable terms from banks and insurance companies.
The offices filing came in response to a lawsuit that Trump filed earlier this month against the judge overseeing the upcoming fraud trial and the attorney generals office. Trumps lawsuit accuses the judge, Arthur Engoron, of failing to comply with an earlier appeals court decision that Trump argues limits the scope of the case against him.
Trumps maneuver prompted a New York appellate judge last Thursday by writer E. Jean Carroll, a federal criminal trial set for March 4 in Special Counsel Jack Smiths case on Trumps effort to subvert the 2020 election, a New York state criminal trial set for March 25 in a case brought by the Manhattan district attorneys office and another a federal criminal trial set for May 20 in Smiths case concerning the alleged mishandling of classified documents.

UK interior minister: We won't save the planet by bankrupting British people

LONDON, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Britain's interior minister said on Wednesday the country needed to take a pragmatic approach to reaching net zero because it could not "save the planet by bankrupting the British people".
The comment by Suella Braverman comes ahead of a speech by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak this week where he is expected to delay some of the government policies which underpin Britain's long-term plan to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
"We have to adopt a pragmatic approach, a proportionate approach and one that also serves our goals, and we're not going to save the planet by bankrupting the British people," Braverman told Times Radio.
Britain was the first major economy to create a legally binding target to bring greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050 and it was quick to build up its renewable energy capacity in earlier years.
