When he was wheeled into the emergency room at GW University Hospital, a foiled-assassin's bullet in his chest, Reagan found it "humorous" to check if all his attending doctors were Republicans.

"I hope you're all Republicans," he quipped.

The media thought it funny. I believe it marked the moment the "partisan divide" became an acrimonious contest, and the day the possibility of our nation working together going forward began to become a forlorn hope.
