9. Ive told this story before, but worth repeating:

I’m of Latvian heritage. When I last visited, several years ago, my relatives warned me of Putin. His fingers were in everything. When the Latvians wanted to lay flowers at the base of their Statue in Riga (much like our Statue of Liberty) in remembrance of a special anniversary, suddenly scaffolds were erected overnight by Russia workers... “to complete necessary work on the structure”.

In those days it was nuisance and bullshit, but the Latvians knew who was behind it and that it would get worse. If I thought for a moment that it was paranoia, I soon learned better. Cemetery stones of war heroes were being desecrated at night, with chunks of stone chipped out of the names with bullets.

In my fifties at that time, a life long citizen of America, I was still naive, despite being the first off the boat from parents who had escaped Stalin’s reign and treachery.

We here forget. They have never forgotten, because it has never ended.
